Planning our 40 anniv. Going to the W. coast an sliding maybe S. of Vegas to hwy 40 but would like to work my way back N.E. from Flagstad if I  can.    Is their any cactus say over 5 ft. N. of 40 or do I have to go all the way down to hwy 10. Showing the wife Tahoe. Really don't need Vegas except to see some palm trees and don't need to Phoenex. Really don't have time to go to the Sonoran desert.

None north of the 40 that I know except in people's yards. You wouldn't have to go all the way to the 10 though

In my opinion it would be more scenic to take 89 up to Prescott then to Jerome, Sedona, flagstaff.

Don't get too close to them.

Going north on I-17 out of Phoenix, you won't see any saguaro's much further north than Bumblebee.  They pretty much peter out between Bumblebee and Courdes Lakes.  The line of demarcation runs northwest from there below Prescott up just north of Wikieup.  They can't handle temps below freezing for more than around 24 hours, so you don't see them much in the higher elevations.

Thanks for the info. glad that Big Sucker didn't fall over on you RP. You would have been stuck there for life. Thought about going up 17 because a couple of national monuments to see also chance to see some wild burrios.  Thanks for the help.

I forgot to mention I laughed pretty damn hard when I saw that picture. Tried to belly up on some antelope north of Belfouche SD once. Had a Camo rain jacket on an camo pants only going about 15 yds. Crawed between those those little cactus plants an got hammered in the leggs. To top it off the antelope I was sneaking up on turned out to be mulies.  News for ya them little blond suckers burned the hell outs my legs.
