                                   Day is Done.................A little story

Just like the opening words to 'Taps'  I am contemplating the end of this day.

I'm sitting outside on my small patio relaxing on the wrought aluminum bench.

I've just gotten over prostatitis and my nights are becoming full of sleeping again. I give thanks to my God and modern medicine, both have gotten me over this age related hump, once again.

I'm facing East and watching the reflection of the setting sun on the yellow apartments across the street.
I'm also reflecting on this perfect 'This is the Day that the Lord has made' and I'm basking in the sounds and sights of this, a day that is winding down.

The quiet street is deserted.  Evidently, my fellow seniors have other plans and are inside.  They might not know what they are missing.

Missing for so many years, for me, was the sounds of nature.  My good hearing had deserted me, the loss was so gradual it wasn't missed.  That is ,until now. Now, today, I have a set of hearing aids that finally are working to my satisfaction.  I've turned up the volume to 3db above normal on these electronic contraptions  and, once again, I'm hearing nature's sounds. The slight amplification makes the sounds of nature more satisfying after a long hiatus,

The raspy slow and ever increasing sound of the cicada in the maple tree in front of me drowns out the slower cadence of the crickets doing their monotonous clicking. It's not hot so the crickets are not working as hard.

The approaching night has dispensed with winds.  Instead, it is quiet.

As I listen to the light sighing of the breeze through the maple tree in front of me, the whispering sound is joined by the rustling of the leaves and the occasional light flapping sound of the Betsy Ross flag flying defiantly on the light pole in my front yard.

Another sound interrupts this symphony of nature's sound.  Looking up, a Vee of Canadian geese is passing over my head at tree top level.  Evidently the last most goose in this gaggle wants to pass as he's desperately honking. There were eleven geese total so maybe this is the impatient bachelor of the flight.

It's about time to go into the apartment.  I take one last look at the azure blue sky slowly changing into a darker blue as the high cirrus clouds slowly and majestically drift toward the southeast.

Time to go.  I ignore the grumbling of my knees as I slowly come to me feet.  Opening the door, I ooze (that is the proper word for being totally relaxed) into the apartment where artificial entertainment awaits.

Nature is still the Best Show.

Really good story and observations!  If you're so inclined and the clouds cooperate, try to get out after dark tonight to witness the Perseid meteor shower.  It's on my agenda!

It's a joke. Your story, a very nice reflection I should have said, reminded me of it.

Nicely written. I, too, have begun to savor the little things. Funny, how when there is a lot more sand at the bottom of the hourglass than the top, we really appreciate being in "the now".

meathead, that is the reason I have A/C.

When I was a kid on the farm I used to sleep in the window sill so as to get some air to kind of stay cool by.

A/C is well worth the cost.
