Took the valk out today and the minute I pulled into my driveway, she died. I turned the ignition key off and then turned it back on. When I pushed the start button nothing happened but the head lamp dimming. No engine turn what-so-ever. I checked the battery and have 12.7 so that's not the problem. Anyone have any ideas what I should check next. I'm not much of a mechanic so this may be something simple like a fuse. Thoughts or guidance anyone?

kill switch accidentally touched,
loose kickstand switch (Is there a bump at the curb and have you hit any really big potholes lately)
sometimes my bike will only start in neutral with kickstand up
loose grounding cable?
check the 30amp and other fuses

Just because Ihe battery had 12V doesn't mean it's not the problem. How old is it? Three years or more, get a new one.

Check the starter button, is a weak point, the tech board should cover it.

Ok, I went out about 30 minutes later from the time of my initial post. Turned the ignition key and the bike started right up. I then shut the engine off and then tested the kickstand theory and found that if you drop the stand while the bike is in gear, the engine will stop. This makes sense. I do remember dropping the stand while still in gear so that would explain why the bike cut-off initially. What puzzles me is that once I put the bike back in neutral, the bike still would not start. I tried repeatedly and still no engine start. Then I walked away, sent my post, tried again 30 min later, doing the exact same thing as a half hour before, then the bikes starts perfectly....? Could this be a possible issue with the kickstand kill switch?

Behold the power of this website! Just posting the question and tada! Could be just an anomaly. Wouldn't do anything unless it happens again. If it does make sure--- Kickstand is up Kill switch is off Clutch lever in or Bike in neutral Still won't start, begin the process. Start with cleaning starter button. It is in the Shoptalk section. And it don't cost nothing. Then go to the things that will cost something. But it really has to go wrong enough times to track the problem down or present a range of symptoms. Ya ain't there yet. |

Take the switch housing (throttle side) apart, clean the start switch and the kill switch.
Every year in Daytona we have to jump start a bike due to using the kill switch or side stand to turn off the engine. Sooner or later you too will forget the key, I just hope its somewhere help is available.

My Valk can be in neutral with the neutral light not being on. The neutral light must be on for it to start with the side stand down.

I've had that similar issue with starter switch only once. Tried starting in 1st gear which I 99% of the time do not do since I usually park in neutral on level ground. I pushed starter switch while in first gear and nothing, totally dead.
Believe it or not, a once in a lifetime coincidence, I was in a parking lot about 30 miles from home and a fellow Valkyrie owner comes up to me (my jaw dropped) and says try putting it in neutral and see if it starts firing it up. WALLA - it worked.
I was stumped for a split second or two and probably would have tried putting the bike into neutral to start it 1-2 minutes later trying something different, but to see a fellow Valk rider come up to me in a parking lot ASAP was a once in a lifetime oddity. Glad he came by though.
I haven't tried cleaning my starter switch yet since hasn't happened again, but probably couldn't hurt.
