https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxIWDmmqZzYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GxWmSVv-cYLynyrd Skynyrd had established themselves as one of the most successful rock bands of the ’70s by the time they released Street Survivors in October 1977. The group’s career would come to a tragic halt just three days later, on Oct. 20, 1977, when their twin engine plane went down in a swamp in Gillsburg, Miss., killing three of the band members, a tour manager and both pilots on impact. The group had put together a string of iconic hits including “Free Bird,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Gimme Back My Bullets” prior to the release of Street Survivors. Anticipation for the new album was so high that it went gold within days, and Lynyrd Skynyrd embarked on the most ambitious headlining tour of their career, traveling between concert dates in their own Convair CV-300. Rock legend has it that Aerosmith had looked into renting the same plane earlier in the year, but passed on it due to concerns over both the safety of the plane, and the readiness of its crew. Lynyrd Skynyrd were traveling from Greenville, S.C., to Baton Rouge, La., when their plane apparently ran out of fuel toward the end of the flight. The pilots attempted to land on a small air strip, but the bottom of the plane clipped some trees, and the aircraft went down in a remote stand of forest. Skynyrd singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, vocalist Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray were killed instantly, while the other band members and road crew suffered terrible injuries. Drummer Artimus Pyle and two crew members crawled from the wreckage and hiked through swampy woods until they finally flagged down a local farmer, who sent for help. Following the crash and the press attention that came along with it, Street Survivors became Lynyrd Skynyrd’s second platinum album. Out of respect for the band and their family members, MCA recalled the album’s original cover, which depicted the band members engulfed in flames. Devastated by the loss of their singer and the injuries sustained by the survivors, Lynyrd Skynyrd disbanded after the accident, leaving the survivors to try to make their own way with varying degrees of success and failure. The next decade would see the musicians pursuing a number of projects, including the Rossington-Collins Band, Vision, and the Allen Collins Band — none of which came anywhere close to the success of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Perhaps inevitably, the band reunited in 1987, with Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson, Artimus Pyle and guitarist Ed King — who had left the band two years before the crash — joined by Ronnie Van Zant’s younger brother Johnny as their new lead singer. But despite a successful reunion, tragedy and drama continued to plague the group; guitarist Allen Collins had become paralyzed after a drunk driving accident in 1986 that killed his girlfriend, and he died in 1990. Judy Van Zant Jenness and Teresa Gaines Rapp — the widows of Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines — sued Skynyrd for violating an agreement they struck after the plane accident not to exploit the band’s name for profit, and as the years went on, most of the original members either left or were forced out for various reasons. Bassist Leon Wilkeson died in 2001, and keyboardist Billy Powell died in 2009. Ean Evans — who replaced Wilkeson on bass — also died in 2009, leaving Gary Rossington as the sole survivor from the original band. The group continues to tour heavily every year.

Wow! It sure doesn't seem like 38 years. I was just coming into my teen years and I loved Lynyrd Skynyrd. They were my favorite band and they remain one of the best bands ever. The original Skynyrd was THE BEST!

IMHO Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama have to be considered in the Top Ten of ALL TIME . I'm sure I have wore out a few cassettes in the day.

Another time another place.
Lying on a carpeted floor with a roaring log fire close by.
A heady, pungent fog of sativa hanging close to the floor whilst a frigid English winter day ice picked at the permeable windows.
Head phones firmly clamped to my head channeling raw sound from graphic equalizer into my ears.......................................
Another time another place.

Hard to believe 38 years. The 70s and early 80s were my rock concert years. Many top bands came to the Saginaw ( MI) Civic Center ( Now Dow Center ) and groups of buddies routinely made trips to Pine Knob in Clarkston Mi. Anyone who lived them new these were wild times. My friends and myself were going to a special one I believe in early Nov. 1977 to see the Skynrd boys play at Wings Arena in Kalamazoo, MI. I still remember to this day when the radio came on with the news of the crash and the loss of Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and sister Cassie Gaines. Devastated I was. They were my very favorite group at that time and I still play those old classics all the time. I was glad Johnny resurrected the band and have seen them a few times and keeps the memories alive. One of my favorite cuts is from you tube that catches the original band in all their glory in 1976 at the Knebworth Fair. Video and Audio is quite good. I see it has a over a million hits with a hundred of them mine playing it on my computer hooked to an old but great Pioneer SX 1080 Receiver and eight speakers. Make that a hundred and one, I just listened again. An old Jimmy Rogers tune called T for Texas T for Tennessee https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY63KTMrkTM

Really a shame. Any of these accidents I find a shame. I remember reading the NTSB report when it came out and as in most accidents it was related to pilot error. If I remember correctly the company that owned the aircraft [ N55VM if I remember correctly] was L J Aviation or some similar name. It was reported the pilots were seen drinking from a bottle of whiskey during the preflight inspection. The final result was pilot error and fuel exhaustion. [There is a difference between fuel exhaustion and fuel starvation.]

I had tickets for that Kalamazoo show at Wings Arena. Sold them back to the box office. I needed the $13.50 for the pair.

My band still plays the songs you listed including Free Bird. We've closed the show for 25 years with that song. It's requested every single night! I'm tired of it but they still want to hear it! Southern rock is great music and hard to beat. Skynyrd was and still is tops. The band in it's origin used to lock themselves in their practice area for DAYS and never leave until they had what they wanted. If I remember right it was an old warehouse? I spend more time with my band on weekends than I do my wife.
Who was it that died last Billy Powell or Leon Wilkinson (sp)? Now there was a pair. Bands are hard business without things like plane crashes. Members die earlier than they should from living the way they do. No sleep, drugs, booze, amongst other things are big contributors.
I like classic rock to include southern rock! Today so called music lacks something and rap, thats a whole other story.

Can remember when the Skynyrd was opening for Charlie Daniels. Soon everyone else was opening for them. Saw them multiple times in multiple venues. And remember exactly where I was when the plane went down in Mississippi. In my dorm room at Univ. of South Alabama watching it all unfold on a black & white TV.

I have got to come hear your band play sometime it may be a weekend motorcycle road trip next summer since you are sw MI. One of the most memorable years of my life was in 79,80 when I got transferred to Kalamazoo. I was only 1 1/2 years out of college and I had quite a few two year younger friends from my hometown of Midland that were going to WMU and I loved that town. It was a very sad day when I got transferred to Toledo. Anyway Southern and Blues Rock has always held a special appeal to me. Just last week while traveling in Ohio I reached into my cd file and found the Allman Brothers a Decade of Hits. Just had to hear Dicky Betts scorch out Jessica and Southbound one more time, or two or three. Chuck

38 years...wow. I was in my first job out of high school, painting a car. Radio was blaring over the exhaust fan noise, when the music stopped and they announced the crash. Craig
