Does anyone know of a locking trunk that will attach directly to the luggage rack, and be able to be put on and off easily?  I'm seeing some that you mount a bracket to the luggage rack, then the trunk will go on and off the bracket easy.  But I was hoping to find a trunk that would come off easy and leave nothing behind.

Does such an animal exist?

The reason folks use a wider/longer bracket plate is to adequately support a decent size trunk.  With the sissy bar in place, there is not much room on a std luggage rack to fit or support a medium to large trunk.  You could probably find something to go right on the rack alone, but it will not be very large, and not much will go into it.  It seems to me the best/largest storage on sissy bar/luggage racks are those tall backpacks that slide over the sissy.  They don't lock, but as soon as you get to your destination, you just lift it off and put it in the room.

Now if you're not 2-up, and remove the back seat and sissy, then a great big trunk would sit right on the rear fender.... but you'd still probably need to make a mount plate.

Yep, no trunk specifically made for the rack with the sissy bar on.  Modifying any trunk to fit on the rack alone would be simple enough I would imagine.  But.... I think Jess gave you the best advise to get a tall bag or another bag of your choice to slip over the back rest or secure to the rest and rack.  Much more room for removable luggage for a trip and you can get the size bag that suits your needs.  If you are set on a trunk, there are options out there, not all that roomy I think.  And if you liked the Valkyire Interstate trunk, you could get one of those and set it up like a Super Valk.... but those are still a bit pricey.  Google Motorcycle Luggage.....

Leatherlyke makes a couple tourpacks that match their bags perfectly. Had the set up on my Magna.

I got an extra luggage rack, and mounted the bracket to the extra rack - then
change racks when you want the trunk on there...

Interesting idea.  But it will never work for me.  It's not complicated enough (I'm an engineer.)   cooldude

I have  a GIVI trunk that has worked very well---expensive though--I got it with a pre-painted lid that perfectly matches the 2002 blue w/white stripe standard valkyrie

I might be interested in that approach as well. Do you have any pictures, Mike?

givi trunk is my add on preference.  I use it most of the time.  when I do not use it I spend 2 seconds to remove it.  4 seconds to put it back on when I want.

the attachment is black plastic but you could get it chromed to mask the black effect.

The stock rack is too short for a trunk.  I tried.  I wound up using a piece of black shelving (no need for painting and the bike and trunk are black).  Mounted the board to the rack with 1/2" bolts and 2 pieces of angle iron, then mounted the the trunk to the board with 1/2" bolts.  Trunk doubled as a backrest and she didn't complain once!

Well... not close up...

I'm solo most of the time, so the bracket isn't even needed, just affix the mounting
plate right to the rack... pardon the on-the-road fork seal change  Wink ...

When two-up, just the rack won't do, as G-Man said. I made a simple bracket
out of wood that holds the mounting plate far enough back so that the passenger
seat and sissy bar can be mounted.

None of it looks good, but 99% of the time I don't care  Wink

I got around the trunk mounting problem by extending the rack's 'legs' by using stainless steel plates, to move the rack up about 4'' and back about 2''. This was to facilitate opening the trunk while still on the bike to put our helmets in while parked up.
I should have made the brackets an extra half inch longer, as the lid binds a bit on the passenger backrest if opened too much, but it does open enough to get the helmets in so I left it as it is.

First trial using aluminium test pieces

After some shaping
