That's an item on my bucket list... to see the northern lights.
I spent two weeks in Minnesota and Michigan this past year, but no luck.
And two weeks in Alaska a couple years ago... still no luck.
I'll see 'em some day!!

Too cloudy here in southeast South Dakota Spent about 20 mins stood out in a corn field, but no such luck. On the bright side though, it was 20 mins of peace and quiet!!

Lived in Edmonton, Alberta for 10 years and occasionally saw the Norther Lights.....they were always spectacular! One night while driving home from work, I pulled over on the hwy and lay on the hood of my car for 30 minutes watching them dance across the sky. Amazing! paul

One of the perks of growing up in Alaska is you get to see them ALOT. The best I ever saw though was in about `76. They were all colors, a lot of reds and dancing quickly about the sky. Lasted for a couple hours like that and then settled into the normal greens and yellows. It was almost like an Acid Trip (without the side effects)

Thx for the headsup. I've never seen them this far south, but back in the day when I lived in WI, up in the North end in the Nicolet Forest, one hunting season the whole sky was awash with green shimmering curtains. All the way to the sourthern horizon. And this in the black sky far from any city lights - the sky was framed with the pine trees.
Meanwhile - Northern lights means solar storm, and potential damage to your GPS. Don't turn it on. I've had four of them ruined by solar storms.

Like meathead said ! I seen them one night from Grand Forks AFB in 73 . you need to be in the country. I seen them once here were I live for about 15-20 minutes being pretty bright but not the same as being way up north. Watched my heart on a TV screen before they sliced me open and that was out of this world a I would put the lights at #2, their is simply no way anything on this planet can beat it except seeing my heart that is. When they are very bright they dance up an down and rotate in circles an move across the sky and in different colors.

Growing up in Central part of Michigan the intense ones could make their way down there on occasion. I remember a spectacular one in summer of 74 while out in Midland County. Layed on the hood of a huge suburban for a least an hour. Definitely something everyone should get to see in person. Chuck

During wheat harvest, they were out in force a number of nights. Wonderful.

So did anyone see them, I kept going outside to check, I live north of Detroit, I think I am too far south, didn't catch them. This is one of the pics I shot a few years back, just out my front door. Gods eye candy to us!

In our second year of marriage, we rented a basement suite on an acreage east of Calgary. Often when coming home after spending the evening in Calgary we would see the northern lights. Sometimes my wife would phone her mom and dad in Calgary to let them know, but they could almost never see them due to the city's lights.

Was in Fort Rich one cold winter night when an extra spectacular display was going on. A teenage girl came running down the sidewalk crying and shaking, she thought it was the end of the world, scared out of her head. We reassured her that it was a natural happening and finally got her calmed down. It was one of those many colored things with rays shooting across the sky. Made me realize how the ancients could put so much faith in omens, and try to explain them away as something else.
