A buddy of mine has a rocket 3 and tires are only lasting
About 8k miles on the rear and as you know they are very pricey. Is there an alternative tire size that works well on this bike?  I've talked to him about going Darkside as I have on my Valk but not sure he wants to go that route if he can help it.

I would think with the Rocket III power 8k is pretty good.

I went through two of the OEM tires on the back of the Rocket III before I went to a car tire.  If memory serves me correctly the OEM is a 240/50-R16 and they were running around $250 each when I bought the last one.  I presently have a Bridgestone 225/60-R16 on the Rocket.  If I were to do it again I would go with a Michelin like I have on the Valkyrie.  I am including a link to the original post on the Florida board where I put the Michelin on the Valkyrie.  The Michelin is a lot more rounded on the edges.
