Gee, the man just got his vehicle stuck and the little girl couldn't keep up while walking out. So instead of putting her on his shoulders he left her with a cocked big ass gun.
Heck, she is old enough to protect herself isn't she.
He got hungry and thirsty and stopped for a few. After-al, we all get hungry and thirsty at times.
The little girl was found after a short time and was just fine.
So, whats the problem ? It all worked out.

I couldn't seem to find a font that was appropriate. I'm not sure I can think of a punishment bad enough enough for this POS.

This story puts me in mind of my USAF Squadron Officer School training where for two nights, they had us (mostly non operational types) running around in the boonies, crossing/climbing obstacles, avoiding capture, crawling in the mud and generally working our asses off learning teamwork and leadership under stress and fatigue.

Each team of ten or so had an instructor tack officer along to provide direction and apply the rules of the game.  We had to lug some stuff with us, including a stretcher.  When we screwed up, one of our party was declared injured, and we had to lug him through the woods on the stretcher, and the bigger the screwup, the bigger the guy (off our team) he put in the stretcher.  This increased the sweating and straining tenfold, and invariably someone would suggest we have to leave the injured party behind for the good of the remaining team to complete the exercise.  Bad idea, you never leave anyone behind (esp a 5yo for cryin out loud), and those teams that voted to leave someone behind, ended up having to carry two guys through the woods, which guaranteed failure of the course (and probable heart attack before ultimate failure).

My 1911s have 2.5-3 lb triggers and giving a cocked and unsafed 1911 to a 5yo is worse than leaving her alone in the desert.  Bad grampa indeed.

I'm thinking it must have been a compact 45, because giving a full sized 45 to a 5 year old would just be nutz.

If he's really any sort of grandpa at all and not just a multi-generational sperm donor, a little time to reflect on what he did, and not seeing his granddaughter for a while would be more than punishment enough.

I know, I'm making a big assumption here.

The leaving her alone with a gun is bad enough, but then going to a bar for a couple beers and a burger seems to show his true colors.

You guys sound like the Spanish Inquisition on punishments.

Drop him off way out in the desert with a compass, knife, loincloth and quart of water, and make him a new reality series....... Bad Grandpa.   Everyone could route for the coyotes, wolves, snakes, tarantulas, and illegals.

Root, I believe, Jess.

If we send him "way out" in the desert we may find the coyotes and wolves too rare to be hoped for.

It's odd that no one seems to be upset with the mother for leaving her child with this "grandpa".  Do we believe this behavior was absolutely new and surprising?  I hope it turns out well for the little girl but it sounds like the law is going to remove the participation of this irresponsible man in her life but leave her in the care of the mother that likely knew exactly what kind of man he was.  Odd, don't you think?
