A friend just received his new Honda Pilot [ 2016]. His son in law is a hot shot engineer for Honda. So we took it out last night. 300+ HP and 28-29 mpg. Nice car, that is if you like SUVs.

Really 28=29 mpg.  These things were always dogs on milage, that is impressive.  Everyone buy Hondas.  It keeps my gravy train rolling.  The Accord sales have slowed, CRVs can not be built fast enough.  Again buy a Honda.  My mechanic, 30 years, says buy a Honda, next is Toyota.

That surprised me too, but, this is a new powertrain for the Pilot, but, I guess its been in other vehicles for a couple years. I'm not one to get a first year anything, so, I guess time will tell. The first year Valkyrie turned out pretty good though didn't it.
We bought JoAnn a CR-V after getting rid of that POS Toyota and its been good so far [ 4 years].

I guess i should say that the little fella that lives inside the instrument panel said it was getting  as high as a consistent 29 mpg on the level at 60-65 mph.

When looking at vehicles for JoAnn we tried about everything but just didn't like any of the 'American' vehicles just due to the blind spots. We even tried new Toyota's but weren't about to buy one. We did it just to irritate the dealer.

That's good mileage for sure, especially with that HP. I have an '08 Toyota Highlander, 271HP, last trip we took with non-ethanol gas once I got out of Florida, running right at 70 most of the time on I-10 we constantly ran above 25mpg. Many times I'd see the computer climb to 27+ on a flat stretch. What really surprises the kiddies in their loud echo can little cars....the Highlander will smoke the tires, and them usually.  Wink

Yah,  the Honda Pilot is  impressive if over 300 hp and gets over 28 mpg.

Wanna bet though it is (only in my opinion)  ugly though inside and out.  I don't drive what I think is an ugly vehicle unless it is free or dirt cheap.

Plus,  am sure is NOT cheap to purchase but am sure reliable as most Honda and Toyotas usually are.

My 3.3L 290hp V6 2014 Hyundai Santa fe base GLS 7 passenger gets 26 avg mpg but has been known on longer trips to get 28 avg mpg, but will never see 30 mpg.  Pretty darn nice though inside and out for the money paid, am sure cheaper than the Honda Pilot.

Most of these V6 engines made nowadays are plenty powerful enough to move most anything under 3500lbs. towing with plenty of get up and go at darn near the same, and in some cases, better mpg than if you got the 4 cylinder in the same vehicle.

Our base 2014 hyundai sonata GLS 2.4L 4 cylinder is at 190 hp and is no slouch either very comparable to say some 10 years ago when most V6 engines got around that 200hp mark as well.  However, what REALLY, REALLY impresses me is the hwy mpg at 38 and even if baby the engine doing longer trips under 65 mph will get no problems 40 avg mpg.  That is on par with most smaller 4 cylinder engines in much small subcompact cars vs. a midsized sedan.

The Honda website doesn't seem to support your figures.  It probably comes down to personal preference. The Highlander is much roomier inside and much more comfortable IMO. Can't argue about build quality or performance on either vehicle.
