With Christmas close upon us, I would like to share a personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving.

As you know, some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time, often on the way home after a "social session" with family or friends.

Well, two days ago, this happened to me. I was out for an evening with friends and had more than several beers followed by a couple of bottles of rather nice red wine and vodka shots. Although relaxed, I still had the common sense to know I was slightly over the limit.

That's when I did something I've never done before - I took a taxi home.

Sure enough on the way there was a police roadblock, but since it was a taxi they waved it by and I arrived home safely without incident.

This was a real surprise to me;  I had never driven a taxi before. I don't know where I got it, and now that it's in my garage I don't know what to do with it.

So, anyway, if you want to borrow it give me a call.

Once in a great while when riding with friends I've been known to have ONE beer with a sandwich. These days though due to the meds I take alcohol is NOT an option whether riding or driving. BUT that taxi joke IS an oldy and goody.  cooldude Ya'll stay safe and sober this holiday season-OR iffin ya can't do dat-look fer a taxi!  Roll Eyes RIDE SAFE.

In towns with no taxi's, call a friend or family to come get you.

Or better yet, drink at home like I usually do.  Cheesy

Back in the day, I carried a wool blanket in my car, if I felt tippsy, I would throw the keys under the seat or in the trunk, and went to sleep. Important: if your keys are in the ignition, or even in sight, even though you may be parked in your driveway.  They can and will nail you, and even if you are on a bicycle, motorcycle, golf cart, or just walking. Here in Michigan, if you get caught, you can kiss $10K good bye!!!! for a start!

A lot of alcohol songs in there from this group for some reason?
Maybe that is why I like their songs so much??   2funny

Ticked me off last night after work went into PicnSave grocery store to buy some alcohol and they close their alcohol dept. at 9 p.m..  Who does that for peete's sake!   tickedoff

I know in my area, they don't have any mercy, when it comes to public intoxication. I know a couple guys that got nailed. One walking home from the bar and the other recently, he was at the waterfront park, and it said no alcohol allowed. He got nailed for drinking at the park, and he has to blow into a machine at a certain time every day for it. I know for a fact he does not drive a vehicle.

Most drunk drivers will only admit to having a couple. Yup, that's why you just blew and .18. Couple what, gallons?

About twenty years ago a friend and co worker of mine went out one night and was driving a very nice Corvette . He got drunk out of his mind and woke up at home in his own bed not knowing how he got there. After getting himself up and feeling ok he went to check to see if his car was there in the garage. Sure enough it was but it was all smashed up from the front up over the roof and back. Trash. Checking the news for several days and nothing was reported. He has many thousands of dollars damage and had to pay for it himself being afraid of reporting it. That's a bad drunk.

After my Naval service I stayed drunk-a LOT. Still drank after my first marriage. Then my kids started showing up. My children DID NOT need a drunk for a father. So consequently I sobered up and stayed that way. I still like a beer now and then or good whiskey BUT no longer to excess. You get a much different perspective while and after driving an ambulance. Most of the D U I wrecks I worked the drunk generally wasn't messed up much. The people the drunk piled into on the other hand--  Cry DO NOT under any circumstances drive after having a couple of drinks. The life you save could be mine or some one you REALLY love. RIDE SAFE.

There is a family run law firm in Denver, Colorado that offers free (Up to $35) rides during five major (drinking) holiday seasons for folks that have had too much to drink (or smoke).  Just mail in your receipt with a copy of your driver's license and they'll pick up the tab for a one way ride home.  I believe that they started it because they had lost a loved one to a drunk driver in the past.  What a great service and humanitarian thought on their part.  Good business sense, also.  They usually dole out thousands of dollars, but feel it is well worth it to the people utilizing it.  Less DUI's, less accidents, and probably a maiming/death or two less.  God bless us, everyone. angel

Right, wrong or indifferent, if I pull a drunk over this time of year and they have NOT had an incident, I will take them home if it isn't too far away. Or, call someone to come get them. I keep their keys if I take them home and keep an eye on their car. IF I should catch them driving within reason after that, I take em to jail.

I have lost many good friends to drunk drivers. Some by their own hand, most out of their control.
I'm not the one you want to catch you. There was a guy who passed out at an intersection.
I jumped off the bike and put his car in park and snatched the keys.
He was just passed out sitting in his car, in the middle of the intersection.
His keys left my hand on I-5 at about 65mph, 20 minutes later.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not pure, I choose to do my drinking at home however.

Well over 20 years ago, I  was at some friends house, Jägermeister just came out, had a couple shots, tasted like cough syrup, no effect. Little while later, I was driving home, got on the E-way and got pulled over by the State Boys. I knew I had a little buzz, but I told them the truth when they asked. No point BS,ing professionals. I got a DUI, they treat me with courtesy, they knew I screwed up. Got in front of the Judge, the officer stated I acted like good citizen, they felt I made a mistake and gave me the minimum. I swore, I would never be stopped for that again. Down a ways, I got the Valk and on that day I quit drinking, have no desire at all for it. The Officer and Judge did me a favor.

Yes, I've basically retired but work part time yet. Still on the SWAT team, dive team. After this long I can't just walk away from it. Been in public service all my life. Worked steady as a   police, for 28 years, and now like I said, part time. gonna try and get completely gone after the first of the year.  I've been in the fire service almost 34 years, have done both together. Now still in the fire service as a chief and will remain there for another few years. I scuba dive and ride motorcycles. My wife says I'm an adrenaline junky. Thats all there is.
