Sad to read that.

So many of us ride way too close to the vehicle in front leaving too little room. More room in front you have to slow down the more time you give the vehicle behind to slow down.

I have to beat myself sometimes for not doing this.

I was passing a Tractor Trailer truck on a crowded I-40 once, when
everyone all the way out to the horizon all of a sudden slammed on
brakes... I kept my eye on the rear view and was ready to point myself
off into the grass in the middle, but the guy behind me was on the
ball enough that I was fine...

I've also run over, in a car, an alligator (part of truck tire) that appeared
right in front of me (because I was following too close)...

These things need to stick with us when we are out there... like when the
truck tire blew apart while Joe and Paul and some others were passing
it... when you decide to pass a truck go ahead and pass the snot out of
it, don't spend a bunch of time riding next to it...

When riding the Valk on the interstate I always hung back until I had a clear shot, then balls to the wall to pass, especially in hot weather. Hot weather and an overloaded semi makes for alligators.

Also three years ago, a rider was waiting at a traffic light at midnight on Coliseum Blvd in Ft. Wayne.  A girl texting hit him from behind, killed him and went another 300 feet with the cycle lodged in her grill.

To my knowledge, she was never charged.

Be careful out there.  Look in the rear view mirror and stay in 1st gear, be ready.

I was a professional driver most of my life. People on average EVERYWHERE follow too cursed close. I'd leave enough space cushion between the front of my 18 wheeler/cage/M/C/rickshaw and 4 or 5 cages THOUGHT the space is for them. I'm running over the speed limit on Phatt Ghurl on a 2 lane and SOMEONE has to git right on my donkey. Weather gets bad and they want to get closer!   In a blizzard heavy rain thick fog or strong crosswinds people either go too fast or to slow but ALWAYS too close. Any of ya'll that put up with "rush" hour twice a day-glad I'm outa dat. See if the fool that took out a fellow rider was using his/her cell phone at the time. Another fellow rider gone senselessly!   R I P-sis or bro!   RIDE SAFE.

If you want to roll behind a tractor trailer, you need to stay back far enough to see the driver's mirrors...
