That when you go shoppin somewhere folks gotta block the aisles when they are talking? Skinny aisle wide aisle makes no difference the just stand there! 
 Or as happened the other day they had the entrance/exit blocked cuz the hada shoot the chit!   
  Or you're coming to an aisle intersection and you ease into that intersection and some young person/bimbo/bozo/90 year old granny or 90 year old grampa is texting or talking on the phone and JUST TOO cursed busy to pay attention to what they are doing? 
  Or the "person" leaves their cart in such a manner you can not get around it and they are comparing 2 identical packages and when you ask them politely to move they look at you like it's your fault and not theirs? 
   Or the dipsticks that can NOT return their cart/carts to the place that is designated for the cart/carts and other folks have to dodge them while walking and or driving? 
   Or maybe from now on NOT going shopping from Dec 14 til the 4th of Jan.  RIDE SAFE.

Right up there with certain types that go to 7-11 (or like places), and with the line long behind them, proceed to ask about lottery tickets and how they work and to be shown the tickets, then ask for their lucky numbers, then ask for hot food, then have trouble paying or making change, then unwrap food and throw wrappers on the floor.

One gets the idea this is the highlight of their day.

Dennis, I think the answer to every "Why iz it" question is because those individuals who do those things never got a gentle smack alongside the head during the "manner learning" sessions while growing up as a kid....but I could be wrong.

Just do what my dad did when he was alive going grocery shopping weekly at Woodmans.

He would, and NOT lightly,  give the other person's cart a HUGE shove with his cart all the way down the aisle without even asking first for them to move it first.

I thought that was rude since he did it often and even not waiting or asking first, but maybe it would then wake their _sses up and learn a lesson.   

He wouldn't care if you were 90 years old or 16 years old or a huge muscle builder person or elderly lady.  He would do it all the time when a cart was left in the middle of the aisle and unable to go around on either side. 

I always, or almost always, MOVE my cart off to the side and is just habit which should be the norm, but it is not in today's world. 

Same way for respect of other people's property regardless if a car or just small personal belongings worth nothing.  If it is NOT yours, do NOT touch it and/or ask first.    Common sense for me, but not for most unfortunately. 

I was brought up that way, for the most part except dad's shoving of carts HARD, and is common sense to me.  If you do the right thing enough times, it becomes 2nd nature and you just do it without thinking.

       I'm thinkin it's mainly because parents are NOT raising their children in some cases. Not ALL but some. I'm also thnkin lotsa folks have NEVER worked for what they want/have. AND maybe NEVER suffered the consequences of their misdirected actions. And-YES-I know there is a difference between a reprimand and child abuse. Also-a reprimand IS NOT a time out-warming up their gluteous max on the other hand WILL git their attention. Missin a lot I know. RIDE SAFE.

  Shopping with wife today , we both pushed the cart. If we were blocked , I did not ask , I just moved their cart. It's to bad that they did not get the E-mail that I was shopping and to stay out of my way.

Lack of situational awareness and bad manners in thinking your the only person who has to use the space. People so involved in themselves forget to offer the courtesy of stopping a shopping cart out of the way. But you can translate that to a person who stops and blocks one lane in a two lane road, the examples are boundless.

   We riding motorcycles have got to become more aware of these things if we are going to survive while riding. Riding teaches you situational awareness as a means to survive and knowing your not the only one using a road keeps you wonder what some A**Hole is going to do being the fact that they are situationally challenged.

  I once heard that driving a motorcycle was on par with operating a fighter jet and while I cannot verify that comparison I can tell you that situational awareness, advanced planning, knowing there are others around has saved me a more times than I can mention. Heck being aware of my surroundings while riding is one of the reasons I ride.

Absolutely. See it every day all day. Right now we have Rib roasts on sale for Christmas. And it's freaking busy. Even though we have an 8' spread of them it's a battle to get in there and get one. But some people will just camp out there with their cart blocking everybody else. Some will see their friend as they are shopping and block the area for a hour talking about their lives. Maybe it's the area but most of these offenders are not the younger people but the retired folks who think they have earned the right to act this way. Most of the younger people are working and their time is valuable and they want to get their stuff done. Back to your decision of driving the cart. I see a lot of guys just standing there with the cart wating patiently out of the way.   If you ask if they need help finding something they almost always tell you they are just the cart pusher.

When we go grocery shopping, I push the cart and my wife has to use the walker. Has a seat on it so she can sit about every other aisle. Often we come across a cart blocking the way and I'll ask nicely first to see if they'll respond by not moving it. If not, I move it for them and often will walk it a few feet down the aisle. Had one young woman tell me if I do that again she'll slap my face. I laughed at her, then told her to make sure she blocks the aisle again so she can experience the folly of her words. My wife, all 94 lbs. of her, quietly told her that would be the second dumb thing she did today....then we moved on. Her main problem.....she was shopping and carrying on a conversation on the phone at the same time. Totally unaware of her surroundings, much like using a phone while driving.

And I'm with RP when it comes to someone on their cell. If they expect me to move....SURPRISE!

The answer to the original question is that in our culture we are continually falling victim to the ever increasing "me" focus of the population around us.  The perspective seems to more and more be to do what causes my needs (and desires) to be met with little or no regard to the needs of others around me.  The intensifying focus is more and more on me to the detriment of concern for almost anyone else.

The sad part is that the fact that it irks us so deeply is some evidence that we also are succumbing to some degree to the cultural norm.

Ya know Carl, I think it is because we (as older men) know how we were raised to open doors for ladies, remove our hats indoors, give up a seat for, and respect our elders, say please and thank you, and, in general, be polite to others...  That's why the things Dennis posted about 'irk' me

They standing there with purse in the buggy while the items are being rung up. They know you gotta pay for these items. Yet they wait till they have a total, then they get their purse out , then they get their checkbook out and then spend several more minutes writing it out. UGh.
When they start ringing my stuff up I have my card out and ready to swipe.

And inevitably the floor person that comes up to check WHAT item it is has no idea WHERE said item lives!    And of COURSE the person making the purchase has ZERO idea WHERE they got the item.    I've gone to longer lines gotten checked out and they STILL be lookin for what they should charge for the item missin the U P C tag.    Ya'll have fun shoppin now-yahear!    RIDE SAFE.

Walmart pisses me off, they have 64 check out lines and only have 4 of them open at any given time. We were there one evening and the 4 lines that were open had people in line all the way back to the clothing. There were 8 employees standing around the manager so I walked over and asked if they have seen the lines. They looked around like morons and said yeah. Then I asked if it was relly that hard to open a few more lines to get the crowd moving. They all said they were on break. We left our cart sit in the middle of the isle and went to Kroger. The main office got a long email complaint about it.

If I buy something and there's no UPC code on the item or packaging I will photograph the UPC code on the shelf and show that at checkout.

Really interested post, if you think about it and substitute auto for shopping cart and aisle for parking lot, it's the same post.

Once most people come into a parking lots they become semi-conscious or figure no rules apply, either way , stupidity abounds.

Dealing with most of these people is paramount to having mental combat with an unarmed person.

I stopped shopping at Sam's, Costco etc when I became single again.

Don't need lotsa one thing and don't need the challenge of the slow pokes getting in my way. Many seemed to use the stores as a way to take the whole family out for the day. ESPECIALLY when there samples to taste. Pigs.

Plus there were never enough check outs open.
