Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: January 14, 2016, 05:33:58 AM »

It's now nearly 8:30AM here, and I'm sitting down in my motel room to type this... I have a very good reason, I think. Folks are outside right now scrapping frost off their windshields, and ALI is still in rest mode under her cover. She's likely to remain so for another hour or two, and I make no apologies for that! According to TWC, it's 28*F outside, and my own guess based on a walk to the office for some OJ and boiled eggs is they may be pretty close this time...

It's supposed to warm nicely today... they say it could even pierce the 50* range! I'm from Missouri on this any more, however. Yep, it was supposed to 'warm up nicely' yesterday, too, only... Well, I'm sure it did warm up at least some, as my face wasn't nearly as cold in the afternoon as it had been in the morning. The rest of me, at least those parts that could benefit, required assistance from my Gerbigs...

Because of that encouraging forecast yesterday, I didn't wear my wool hunting socks that I carry with me for just such occasions... Now I'm faced with that same difficult choice today! If it did warm much yesterday, my toes never got the memo, and they were beyond chilly all day. Not good...

Feet, and particularly toes, have a way of registering their discomfort, and there is no mistaking their situation. Now, should I wear those heavy socks today to avoid a repeat? If I do and it warms up like predicted, then my feet could get hot... another unpleasant condition. If I don't and it fails to warm up, then... you know...

I know there is a simple solution... start out wearing them, then if it does get warm change them out. Easier said than done! I know, because I've had to do this before. I'll be layered-up a good bit, and I'm getting longer in the tooth with each passing day. Changing socks, and especially getting my boots off and back on, are a challenge even when not layered-up, so therein lies another set of unpleasant issues... Not so simple after all.

Procrastination is my plan at the moment. I'll just wait around another hour or so and see how things look then. I'm probably going to ruff it and wear the regular boot socks. I hope I don't regret that call... I'll let y'all know how things go... maybe even fill ya in on some of the details of this outing, too.

Bruce,
I'm thinking you should consider investing in some of those electric heated socks.   When it's cold, turn them on, when it's hot..............   Well, you get the idea.   Ride safe my friend. cooldude

Hope it warms up for you, too many sox and eating only eggs gets old after a while...
No riding here, lots of salt and ice.

Yeah, I've thought about those... and many times I'd wished I'd had them! This time, for example. Oh well, I dunno... maybe... Good idea, obviously, but another item to keep up with, pack, repair or replace from time to time... Hmmmmm...

At the moment we're in Madison, GA... between Atlanta and Augusta. I've been traveling back roads, and I'll continue to do so the rest of the way home. Yeah, I'm headed to the barn. I'd wanted to go to Florida, but rain scared me off... plus, I have gear with me for cold, and the temps are too mild where I'd be going down there. I'm thinking I'll look for a weather window soon to finish that leg of the trip... and to modify my wardrobe... No hunting socks required down there!

I usually stay south of I-40, I-20 most of the time, this time of year... I'm too inexperienced with driving on frozen pavement, my wardrobe isn't up to serious cold, and I couldn't bring myself to expose ALI to salt, and de-icer substances applied to roads up yonder... OK, and I'm a wuss, too...

Time now to go find me some real breakfast... Gig, you're right about a diet largely of eggs only!!! It has warmed up a bit outside, and I'm itching to get back out there... ALI seems eager, too... Later

P.S. Speaking of sock choices, I've flip-flopped back to wearing those bulky items today after all... I suppose the memory of yesterday is still too fresh...

Just a thought here Bruce. Maybe a regular sock on one foot and a huntin sock on the other. That way a least one side is good no matter what the weather does. Good luck.  cooldude

I keep a few pairs of toe warmers in the saddle bag

If Im gonna be riding all day and its at or below freezing in the am I put one on top of the front of the sock and one below

Boyhowdy the foot is plenty warm all day

If my feet and hands *electric gloves are warm I am fine in sub freezing  but MAY opt not to use the mesh jacket

Glad you are having fun Bruce !

I've bookmarked that site into my Favorites... I've used one of those products before... and they worked! Saw them in an out of the way convenience store one cold, blustery day in northwest Texas, and I was mighty glad to have them then... Haven't seen them in years though. Thanks for the link. Yep, I'm having more fun that a kid at Christmas!!! ALI is so good to me...
