Do Your Best and Miss the Rest!

Yorkville, Illinois

« on: January 17, 2016, 05:53:57 AM »

I've ridden with temps in the 20s so many times I haven't kept track but my ride in to work this morning was a first-even for me.

Not sure what wind chill would be going 50mph. Ride was the usual 5.7miles.

I think it will warm up about 3 degrees for the ride home.

Wiggy,

Been out c couple of times today, to take Lizzie to work and a Menard's trip. It is frickin cold out
there today.  Hope you have electric everything.

A short story about riding in the cold.

Years ago, on my way to a Rolling Thunder board meeting and made a stop on the way.

There is a old greeter (Navy Vet) at the Walmart on Farnsworth in Aurora.  He is old school Harley
all the way. Covered in ink, rings and the long flowing gray hair. Walked in and was wearing a Harley
shirt and he stopped me.  "Where is your bike?" he asked.   Told him I was between bikes because
of an accident and was looking for a new one.  I asked where his was. In the parking lot he replied.
Asked about electrics.  His quote  "Electrics are for pussies."   We chatted a bit more and I made
my purchase and left.

Walked outside and saw his trike in the parking lot.  Noted that he had only the shorty windshield,
which on a Harley provides no protection from the wind at all.  Climbed  inside my truck and noticed
temp was  2 degrees.  I was cold just thinking about riding on a night like this.

Drove to my meeting in my nice warm truck.   Got to my meeting and started if off by remarking
that there were no bikes in the parking lot.  They looked at me like I was crazy,  Told them we were
a bunch of pussies according to the Walmart greeter.  We all had a good laugh.

More power to those that ride in this type of weather.  I  don't and won't ride in such weather anymore.  I will take the ribbing from the greeter and just smile.

Ride safe and stay warm,

Some other Honda's (ST1300) don't read below 14 degrees. Looks like our bike does the same!

I installed heated grips on the B. Nothing else is electrically heated but I do wear a balaclava(sp?), gloves, etc.

Hmmm, not sure what the bike thermometer reads down to. It was zero this AM so I assumed the double dash temp reading meant zero but maybe not. My phone is showing we've heated up to a balmy 6 degrees so I'll check it again when I leave in 20 minutes.

I'm lucky not to have much salt on the road but the B has regular black rims anyway. I'll keep them rinsed off just in case. Thanks.

WOW, only heated grips.   I was just outside again and the wind is howling here in Plainfield.  I am not  sure I have enough layers to stay warm on a bike today.

Wiggy, you the man.

Popeye, since we are all of 10 miles or so apart, your weather is pretty much my weather. We have to commit to meet up when the temps are warmer and ride together sometime!

I've ridden in the lower 30's many times...  I've ridden in upper 20's once or twice.  But low enough for the computer to say it can't tell???  Wow.  Hat's off to you my friend!  cooldude

By the way... it rarely gets below 30 here in Southern Louisiana... so I am not likely to ever see my wing give up on temp display.

Guess yer just gonna have to get a digital freezer temperature reader Russ.  Grin

Riding in the colder temperatures here in my area, 37 degrees or so. I really haven't gotten cold. The B does provide great protection. Only my feet seem to get cold. To remedy this issue, I place my feet all the way up to the valve covers and I feel the heat off the motor, I rest my feet on the shifter and the foot brake. Not really applying any pressure on the foot brake, I don't need my brake lights coming on.

Dennis, you're right on the money! My feet were ok but my ankles were stinging a bit from being exposed. I wear ankle socks due to being type 2 diabetic and the wind was getting to them. At work, I cut some pieces out of a tyvek suit and wrapped them. I was fine for the ride home. Btw, the Baker hand wings do an awesome job blocking the wind when closed also.

I'm going to need you to make me smarter.  I'm type 2 also.  Anytime I put on boots I wear RedHead insulated socks. Am I doing something wrong or ill advised?

best be wearing 2 layers of socks tonight and into tomorrow.  Is -7 degrees out now and expected with windchill to be -25 or so by later tonight.

Most local schools have already cancelled school for Monday due to cold.   A lot of times the buses for the farm kids living in rural area won't start since are diesel and if in small schools like ours, the buses stay outside in the cold all night long not in a storage shed.   I guess just too risky for the 'just in case' the buses break down in the severe cold weather.

Just wish they would close work as well tomorrow, wishful thinking!!  cooldude

Willow, you're not doing anything wrong. When I found out I was type 2, I discovered that diabetic socks were loose fitting, non binding to not restrict blood circulation. It's just been a personal preference to take that one step further and wear ankle type socks, whether of the looser, diabetic sock material or regular socks.
However while wearing a boot, you would want the higher protection to keep the top of the boot from causing irritation to your legs--as long as the elastic tops of the socks aren't constrictive.

I don't have circulation problems as of yet but it's just a concession to not speed up the onset of the symptom.

Cookiedough, I have off on Monday so I don't plan on going anywhere. Your advice is sound. Thanks!

In the late 80's I rode to work on my Kawasaki. It was twenty five as I left for the second shift. I never checked the weather forcast ,as I usually do as most of my job was outside . When we got off at midnight , the bike started and I was going to meet at a tavern for a beer. When I got there the bartender said therer is no snow , so that leaves out a snowmobile. Do not tell me you are on the motorcycle.
Sure , why not. He said it was 15 below. I wish he had not told me as I had 15 miles to get home.  No alcohol , a cup of coffee and I left. I was V E R R R Y  cold by the time I got home. When a cold front comes thru Northern Illinois ,it's cold.

Wow..Ross, that's cold. I didn't plan on going out today but the wife called and asked if I could bring her phone charger to work. It's about 3 miles from here--not too bad. I dressed warmly with insulated Carhart socks this time and was toasty. Since I was off today, I called my ENT doctor to see if there were any cancelations and there was one at 4:00, which I took. That'll be about an 8 mile jaunt each way and will be a balmy 7 degrees here at that time.

One of these days I will get my license sticker updated for my work car...
