Here in Flint Michigan is becoming national news, and people are getting on the band wagon of attention. Keep in mind this is only my opinion and observation.  Of course the news media is not 100% informative also.  But the bottom line is, the water on the Flint River is contaminated with toxins, and mainly Lead Poisons. Our great focused for the people Governor, Rick Snyder, has seemed to have dropped the ball. It seems that they use to get water from a different source, and to save money, they changed the water source to the Flint River, which in turned has high levels of lead, and the lead got into the drinking water.(it has even been suggested, not to wash body and clothes in the tap water)  It seems that an independent person has contacted a concerned person in the EPA that did an analysis on the water content, and it seems it was two times the legal limit for consumption, which they brought that information to the media so it could not be swept away and buried.  It seems that Lansing (Our State Capitol) was aware of it, even before July, It was said that Snyder was informed in Oct. but sat on it till recently. Understand this guy, he does not talk to you, he talks AT you or DOWN to you. I never voted for him because I knew he was a “0”. On his original campaign, his pretence to his election was that he was a “NERD” because he admitted he got bullied in school. Well, and nerd will tell you, you do not admit to being a nerd. It would like be a white guy, going in to a black bar, and bragging that he just joined the KKK. So right there I knew he was bad news to begin with, so now he is showing his true colors. Now the people of Flint say he should be arrested for what he did, and others want him to resign.  Known people are jumping on the band wagon, first time I was glad to see Jessie Jackson, Michael Moore jumped on, and the people of Flint told him to take a hike, because he came empty handed, and just give lip service and make a documentary for his own profit,  and he is from Flint. (People and groups are donating bottled water to the people of Flint)  I guess the thing is when lead gets in to your system it doesn’t get out, not sure about that! Obama declared it a disaster, now the Homeland and other service are stepping it. My point is, another demonstration of the wealthy looking at the workingman as being dispensable product, and other point is, have you had your water check lately. The only reason his was brought to the attention of the people, was by a private citizen not the city or state government. Like I said, it’s just my opinion and observation, doesn’t mean I am right
.
So what do you think!!

To me, who is the villain?  Who originally ordered the switch to the other water source?

Also, I heard that the source of the lead is in the pipes?  That the original lead had been corroded over over the years, and the new water source was enough chemically different that it stripped off that covering corrosion, and the lead began leaching into the water.  Which is why now, switching the water source back to the original, will not stop the lead leaching.

WHO originally switched the water?  The Mayor?  The Governor?  The EPA? The City Council?

Doesn't seem like that is a decision the Governor would be making.  More like Mayor or EPA.

Didn't the Governor dissolve the city govt. and install his person ? The real problem as I see it is when informed by the EPA guy about the water they tried to discredit him and hide the issue. But I don't know much about Michigan and might have the story mixed up.

So what do you think!!

Well, it's pretty obvious you don't like the guy from your comments.

What I think is, this is and was not a decision made at the Governor's level.   I'd say your City Commission is to blame.     I'm not suggesting your Governor is good or bad, just that this decision was most likely not made or influenced at his level.

It's also not something easily fixed.   Millions of dollars to get clean water since they apparently don't want to go back to Detroit for water until the construction is finished on their current project.

You are probably right! I don't have plans of inviting him over for Easter dinner. And I am probably in error to say so. He is a smug, you should had known, common knowledge attitude that bothers me.  I guess it reminds me back in high school of two kids with the same attitude and out look. This one always seemed to be in the same classes as I. Far as class work wise, he got good grades, but he was one of the dumbest people I have ever known. He was basically teachers pet or better known as teachers snitch. Always correcting people of their errors or spelling and so on, anything he could find fault in. Thing is, if he snitch about things that was his concern I could understand, but he was always in others business that did not concern him, and was getting people in trouble which was not necessarily had to happen. He was so arrogant and dumb, he would snitch on guys that even teacher wouldn't mess with, even PE teachers. And he couldn't figure out why people didn't like him and why they would retaliate against him. So I guess that is what I see in this Governor, the same characteristics.  I am probably wrong!! I hope for the people of Flint I am.  We all have faults!!!

This gets pretty nasty and I would say definite legal action should be taken but dont think it will. If the EPA knew and they put the one who exposed this under house arrest what do you think will happen.

Government is blowing its own credibility at every level and people are starting to take notice. This article is pretty good and explains quite a bit since I was not up on the details on this.

The actual source of the problems is to my understanding now is that the water treatment plant did not use corrosion control and now the pipes are leaching this lead. Treatment plants take poop and turn it into drinking water so they can filter out most all contaminants. The source of the water is important only to the treatment you have to use and the equipment needed to make it pure.

This is a pretty up to date article below that I have taken some lines from.

This is turning into some pretty serious stuff but with that said bottled water or reverse osmosis system or even a good filter system will filter out the water and make it able to drink. But to wash with it will suffice. I try not to drink the water from the tap since most municipalities use fluorine in the water. Originally thought to help teeth has since found out to do nothing constructive to the body and its actually what they embalm people with.

http://flintwaterstudy.org/

Miguel Del Toral emerges from EPA’s House Arrest; FlintWaterStudy supports requested federal relief for Flint

Del Toral, gagged and effectively placed under house arrest by EPA Region 5 Administrator and political appointee Susan Hedman, was certainly guilty of doing his job. In early July, Del Toral released an interim memo to sources

Outstanding reporting by HuffPost, Detroit News and others, has demonstrated how Hedman worked hand in hand with MDEQ to cover up Flint’s water woes and evade accountability for the growing disaster.

EPA knew about MDEQ’s illegal actions since at least April 2015, and did nothing to protect Flint residents. EPA has also known about blatant misrepresentations on water lead safety since 2004 across the United States, and has repeatedly helped cover up more recent problems in other cities such as New Orleans.

Right from the EPA site below

Susan Hedman was appointed by President Barack Obama to be EPA Region 5 Administrator on Earth Day 2010. She directs EPA’s operations in the six-state Great Lakes region that includes Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and the reservations of 35 federally-recognized tribes.  She leads a team of over one thousand scientists, engineers, lawyers, environmental specialists and administrative staff in the Region 5 Office.

If all this is true then that would mean state and federal gov worked together to deceive the people and not protect them. This is the major job of government not telling us about helmets or guns. This would also be status quo for most local governments they will usually not get prosecuted unless there is gross problems because the fed just don't care or is in on the mess.

OK now what do you think?

At one time I had five Uncles and Aunts living in Flint.  Everyone has passed but I still have more cousins than I know around this city, which has taken a horrific beating for over 30 years.

If this river water caused aging pipes to leach lead than this problem will be coming to thousands of cities across this country in the years ahead, unless these pipes are replaced and but soon.  The infastructure of these county is in serious trouble and only one man is talking about it on the campaign trail.

One of the things that confuses me is, if you are going to make a major change in your water system, wouldn't you test the source before starting that change. Example: A guy walks up to you, with a can that says GAS on it, he tells you it is good gas, and want you to put it into your bike. What would you do, would you pour it in or would do some serious checking first. Doesn't that make sense, so why would the controlling body of a city, preform and act, like they woke up with a new mind every morning. Its not as important who to blame, as how to correct the problem NOW!

Did anyone happen to watch Dateline about  Dr. Farid Fata treating people for cancer, that did not have cancer, cheating people, some dyeing and so on!  MY point here is the reason this doctor got caught and the water quality issue was exposed, basically by accident. People stepped up and things were exposed, other wise it would have been, life as normal and no one would have known and most important no one cared.

The very title (misleading title) you put on the thread YOU started indicates that what was important to YOU was indeed who to blame, and erroneously at that.

I try to stay away from the tripe but now and then I get sucked into reading it.  I'm a working man and I'm wealthy (at least so by comparison to most of the world).  I guess that puts me on both sides of your perceived conflict.

LOL!  Ron, you're most likely wealthier than am I.  I have assets amounting to a little less that what is regularly recommended for a comfortable retirement.  The experts recommend a half million dollars in this country.  I currently, as a working man, do draw an annual salary barely into the six digit range.

As my adopted son, you'd be responsible as I move into my retirement years, to assist me with my living expenses.  I have eight children.  I don't honestly believe that any of them are going to slip into that role so I would be happy to take you on in that capacity.   cooldude

The water in any area is a jurisdictional issue. The DEQ (EPA?) should monitor water quality if there is a problem identified along with a whole host of other things. This should have been caught immediately and a long time ago when the change was possibly going to be made. Water samples should have been taken of a possible source before anything was changed to assure that the area would be getting quality water.
So who really dropped the ball here?

Like I said, this issues were exposed by accident, Would you think it would be a good idea to have your water analyzes, just for comfort reasons, knowing your good. You know! In previous replies here people speak of wealth, "My wealth it my Health", health is our greatest assets, without it you got nothing! Don't want to go from two wheels, to three wheels to four wheelchair.

So, I see it as some of the people in Flint and some placed across America, having their wealth taken from them.

I am not promoting them, just an avenue. I use their products.

i guess that all depends on whose definition of "natural" you subscribe to. Alas, you miss my point. See if this helps you out. Mr. Dreamaker obviously isn't a fan of our governor. Also, apparently he isn't a fan of the wealthy. I, for the life of me have never figured out why some people are so envious of those with wealth. Not sure if you were insinuating that I dislike our president, and therefore was making a derogatory remark about his ruling, all I said was his administration disallowed the funds. Nothing more, nothing less. And then applied Mr. Dreamakers assumptions as to why. Now, was that so hard?

Envy, that's a stretch, I couldn't care less about ones bank account, that's their business. I know, I spell for crap, and my grammar sucks, and have difficulty getting my point across, but I am not that far in left field to understand.  Its about attitude, respect and being responsible to people, and not thinking you are better than they are, because maybe you do have money, fame, power. I like paying my bills like everyone else, but the money doesn't motivate me. Its not ones wealth that bugs me, its their mindset thinking they can do what they want, to who they want, that bothers me. So its not about envy of your wealth!

If I interpreted what little I read about this correctly, corrosive (i think all water of a certain pH level would be corrosive) water from the Flint river, leached lead from the water systems pipes.  The lead levels in the Flint river water were not high when tested prior to the switch and it would take time for the leaching to occur, so the problem could only be detected through regular sampling on the water after the switch was in place.  If that sampling was performed, the government agency responsible for that needs to be held accountable.  If they were sampling and not sounding the alarm the same applies.  I don't think anyone intentionally decided to make a switch to a contaminated water source in order to perpetrate the oppression of the working man.

The city of Flint is indeed in dire straits financially, and many blame GM for that when they closed Buick City, one of their largest manufacturing and engineering centers.  They are only partially to blame.   Loss of market share, a poor relationship with the UAW, and the employees themselves also share some responsibility.  Read the book "Rivethead: Tales from the Assembly Line" by Ben Harper.  You can only overpay people for so long for less than a days work before it catches up with you.

My point, no matter where the water comes from, what happened to weekly..monthly testing? Shouldn't this have been caught before it got to the point it is now? All I'm saying is that shouldn't the water department or the jurisdiction supplying water have found this through their in house testing? Our water is tested regular by our water department.

How bad was the lead poisoning in Flint’s water? Ten people have died from drinking it. Doctors now warn that every child in Flint under the age of six – over 8,000 of them – must now be treated for lead poisoning. The long-term effects to their health and mental development won’t be known for some time.

It’s gotten so bad that President Obama was forced to declare a federal emergency in Flint. National Guard troops have begun pouring into the state to help get water to people who can’t trust their faucets not to kill them. Celebrities such as Cher and Michael Moore have flown in tens of thousands of bottles of water.

Through it all, Michigan’s Republican governor has spent almost all of his energy trying to spin this epic disaster as not his fault. Absolutely nobody is buying it.

This wasn’t a hurricane or a tornado or a wildfire, this was a Republican Party that was so interested in turning a profit that they gambled with the lives of their constituents. Calling this a natural disaster would be one of the biggest political lies ever told.

It should also be noted that while Snyder would like nearly 100 million dollars from the federal government . His state just posted a $575 million surplus. Flint’s lawmakers have asked that some of that money be used to help out the city. So far Snyder hasn’t offered it.

How bad was the lead poisoning in Flint’s water? Ten people have died from drinking it.

I read about the ten people who died from Legionnaires’ disease (a bacterial infection), and
if you look  you can find some people with theories that Flint river water without corrosion
control might have caused more Legionnaire's disease than normal.

The Michigan Department of Health published this data, which is graphed in a Forbes article:

How bad was the lead poisoning in Flint’s water? Ten people have died from drinking it. Doctors now warn that every child in Flint under the age of six – over 8,000 of them – must now be treated for lead poisoning. The long-term effects to their health and mental development won’t be known for some time.

It’s gotten so bad that President Obama was forced to declare a federal emergency in Flint. National Guard troops have begun pouring into the state to help get water to people who can’t trust their faucets not to kill them. Celebrities such as Cher and Michael Moore have flown in tens of thousands of bottles of water.

How do you figure the Republicans did it?  EVERYTHING I read, says the Gov's office did NOT make the decision, the City of Flint did.  Don't they have a Democratic council?

But they had an Emergency Manager in charge who was appointed by Snyder. I'm not saying it's all his fault but some of the blame lies on his shoulders. The link provided by Skinhead is pretty informative, check it out.

Look, I don't hate anyone, I might not like them, that is different, although I am a fair judge of character, when it comes to people. Even though I may not act it, but I am aware of most peoples games they try and pull. And as you noticed, I am not sending hugs to Snyder. At this point, who is and is not to blame is not going to solve the problem. You can take care of that later, after finding a solution to the problem. Think about this!!!!  How would you feel, if you just found out that the water you have been drinking, cooking and bathing in, for the last 6 months to a year, is poison. Oops!! Now just my observation only, but they have been flaunting the amount of bottled water that have donated, like it is a badge for humanity, trying to justify the condition. People are dying, possibly due to this problem.  I noticed the filters they are passing out, which I noticed are Pur and Brita filters, from what I seen on TV, which don't have much longevity. The Pur is about 200gal and the Brita is about 100gal, and they don't get out all the lead out of the water. So in a sense, it give these recipients a false sense of safety. 100 and 200 gallons is nothing with a family to use up.
And again, this was exposed due to some ones accidently stumbling across it, so how many other places across the US are having the same conditions and not knowing about it.  And guess what, if they have to correct the condition, guess who is going to pay for it.

This CNN story breaks down the situation well, easier to understand.
I live in MI, and Snyder has circumvented the democratic process by
finding loopholes in the law, so that big decisions never find their
way to voter input. Forcing emergency managers on bankrupt cities
and giving them unlimited power was the genesis of this debacle.
During his two terms in office his polices have really hurt the poor,
but benefited his rich cronies. I wouldn't know where to begin.

Yes, an emergency manager put in place by Snyder, who takes over everything and answers only to the governor.  When the emergency manager comes in, all the elected officials are over ruled and rendered ineffective by this one person.  Since he was appointed by a repub governor, it's not a stretch to say the emergency manager is also.
The change in Flints water source was made by the E mgr to save a few bucks.  Eight thousand kids under 5 years old have been poisoned. Do you know how many kids under the age of 5 live in Flint?           8,000.

Guess what happened to that emergency manager?  He has been promoted and moved on.

Edit;  The emergency managers name is Darnell Earley.  He is now the emergency manager of Detroit schools.

Bottom line, again, it don't natter who or what you blame at this point.  These people need help, they need a permanent fix, and not a band aid and allot of distraction on who did what.

Interesting today, they had a current episode on Dr. Oz today about Flint water, gave a clearer definition of what caused the present issue in Flint. They had one of the mothers from there and also had Erin Brockovich  in LA. I didn't realize or have any idea how many issues that are going on concerning our water across the US, some worst the ours.  Turn out that Flint is the straw that broke the camels back. Here in Mich. people are resigning suddenly and leaving their posts. If you are interested you can probably watch that episode on Dr.Oz's web site tomorrow.

Just shooting from the hip, but it makes me wonder, if that is why kids act the way they do today.  They said that the poisons have a greater effect on children, because they are still in the developing stages. Interesting!!!
