Recall when the storm hit D.C. a few days ago, they sent thousands of "non-essential" employees home. To me, it begs the question then: "why is there thousands of non-essential gov't. employees?"

Just asking.  ???

Very good question. Most of the non- essential employees are the F'N politicians.

The media invented that term.

Federal law specifies certain positions as "emergency essential" who may be ordered to work under conditions of national emergency or even if there is no appropriated funding available.

Not defending the federal government, but, I have a feeling almost every business has some non essential employees. I think its a matter of terminology.

Once after having gone through 3 rounds of layoffs, we had a big snow and around noontime the word went out that all non-essential personnel could go home.  What they meant was people that were non-essential to the immediate operation, i.e. that weren't actually receiving and dispatching line airplanes.  Nobody left.  Everybody was afraid to declare themselves non-essential.

Simple, every government agency that ever existed has one main objective, to grow.  The more people on board, the more status and power the department head has, and the higher the GS rating grows.  Its all about power and money.

Having worked as a Fed employee for over 40 years, the term non-essential employee was referring to those who were not needed to keep the office open during an emergency.  Those who were essential were normally the top management, IT, and LEO types.  those needed to make decision on what needed to be done during the emergency.   The ground pounders were sent home.

I was never involved in a weather related emergency, but did suffer thru two gov shutdowns due to budget not being signed.   Yeah, it sort of hurt the first time being told I was a "non-essential".  But the days off were great.   We did get paid for the days off.

I'd add Fire department to that list as well, but otherwise I'd agree.
