While there is never enough ice for me to drive my Jeep out there, there is more than enough ice, 13" +, to park/drive ONE vehicle, without issue...  I've been out ice fishing in my area of SE WI since mid January, and have found good, thick, strong ice.  These fools were parked as close to one another as if they were in a WalMart parking lot 

My boys and I use our Honda 4Wheeler, on the lakes that allow motorized vehicles (600 lbs vs 3000 lbs for a small car/truck), and my rule of thumb is to NEVER be the first one making tracks 

Lotsa $$$ getting waterlogged out there this evening...

One of my earliest memories is my Father taking me fishing on the Saginaw Bay ( Lake Huron ) in January probably 1960 or 61.  We come up to the ice and proceed to drive out with a 5k chevy impala for miles.  Even though young I was scared crazy.  We stopped when we found about a hundred other vehicles.   That was some relief to know others were there it may be safe.     Over the years we made that trek many times, and there was always 20 plus inches of ice back then that led us to some great perch fishing.

Always make me nervous hearing the pop/crack of the ice below.

I've done it a few times, but only if 20" or so of ice, not 12" which they say will hold a truck, won't chance 30K in vehicle damage uninsured.  I have ATV's now worth 5-6K can deal with loosing them being 800lbs. loaded up is all which am sure 6-8" of solid ice will hold just fine.  

Scares the crap outta me as well when ice fishing nearby lakes and a truck/Suv drives right up close within 20-30 feet and stops hearing the pop/crack as well as seeing the fluctuation of water going up/down in my ice hole.  For me, just not worth it.

Craziest thing I EVER saw was up in door county WI on bay side of lake Michigan watching in my binocolars about 1 mile offshore in am sure over 75 feet of water these 20-30K trucks/suvs crossing an open water expansion crack on 2x12 wooden planks over open water pressure crack driving very slowly over the boards.  Just plain nuts to catch some perch/walleye.  

I see that show called ice road truckers and NO amount of money will get me to drive a semi loaded down with weight onto any amount of ice covered lake/river.

At least those pics don't show the cars in too much trouble and I believe they jerked them all out without much damage.

One story, hopefully as short as I can keep it.
Very seldom does our local lake [ one of NY Finger Lakes] freeze. It never completely has frozen completely. The winter of '81 the north froze more than I had ever seen if freeze. We fish that lake from boat all winter. As I was driving past one morning I saw a bunch of folks sitting out on the ice fishing and I saw the truck sitting in the pull-off of a fishing buddy so I pulled in and walked out to talk with him. Not much was going on and it was a beautiful calm sunny day. A fella stood up and started walking across the ice about 100-200 ft from us, no one else moving. I saw the water starting to slosh in the hole which immediately got my full attention. I asked him just how thick this ice was and he said it was plenty thick, about 3/4 to 1 inch. They were probably at least 50 guys on that ice. I hastily bid him goodbye and tread as lightly as I could to firm ground while he laughed. As far as know no one got wet that day.

They got lucky if only 1 inch of ice.  I won't walk onto the ice if much under 3" although 2" is usually fine, just too much chance that next step will be 1" and go down.  

I hear 10 of the vehicles got totaled on Lake Geneva am sure pulling one out shifting the ice opening it up more so and sinking a few of them deeper in the max. depth they said of 15 feet tops in area.  

Idiots parking so close to one another if spread out probably no issues then.

I remember about 30 years ago a group of people drove way out on Lake Michigan to party. While out there the chunk of ice broke off and drifted out. List of vehicles included cars, trucks, snow mobiles and motorcycles and quads. They were lucky some one had a CB. to call the coast guard. They had to leave knowing all vehicles left on the ice was lost. Any one driving on ice not knowing it will hold the vehicles deserves what they get...

I've been through the ice twice. Once when I was 12 and again when I was 21. I will never go on the ice ever again.
