Origin of name

The hamlet was originally known as Carlton, but was required to change its name because mail was being mixed up with the larger community of Carrollton several miles down the Ohio River. The community is still referred to as the Carlton voter precinct.

The name Rabbit Hash may derive from the historic use of the local rabbit population as food. During the early 19th century the town was well known for a rabbit hash meal. Steamboats often stopped to order the famous hash as they traveled along the Ohio River.

Kind of reminds me of Godfrey's Market, which we lost to fire in 2002...
I ate at the lunch counter of the original one a few times, one of the things
I remember was watching an older lady picking from among several
country hams that were hanging from the ceiling...

They rebuilt it... it still has a grill and lunch counter, but has passed from the Godfrey
brothers who ran it for 50 years...

It was just 8 days ago when at a client in Anderson, In, I found out about Rabbit Hash.  Ron rides a 2010 Heritage softtail and we planned on making a ride to there some time this spring or summer.  I guess we can put that off until they rebuild it.  Ron told me of their town mayor.  It seems in 2008 Rabbit Hash elected it's first female mayor that being a border collie named Lucy Lou.  This cunning canine has been so successful she threw her dog collar in the ring for president recently.  She just may get my vote. coolsmiley

Rabbit Hash is an unincorporated community and census-designated place  in Boone County, Kentucky, with a population of 315. The town is notable primarily due to its name, and its string of canine mayors.
