A Justice of the Peace, who didn't see the body, took the Marshalls word for it that he died probably of a heart attack.  The body was escorted to a Funeral Home by Federal Marshalls and embalmed, from what I read.

I was out very early this Morning.  Someone at 96.3 in Columbus, Ohio reported they heard Scalia had been found with a pillow over his head as reported by someone in San Antonio.

Anyone else hear this?  I will remain most skeptical of this for now but I love a great conspiracy theory as do most people.  I mean who would benefit from his death?

I heard that also on our local radio talk show. There may be nothing to it but its starting to smell fishy. A conservative supreme court justice found dead with a pillow over head, no autopsy but pronounced dead of natural causes, and time running out for Obummer....hmmmm

Damn Meat,  that's twice in one day we agree on something.  This is getting scary!  You have to admit, as incompetent as the current administration is, leaving the murder weapon on his face insted of placing it under his head after the dead was done would be just like him, after all he is a above the law.

Has anyone checked out where Bernie was when all this went down?  I think he did it to ruin the beast's chances in the election.

Bernie is out of the loop. Obama and Putin have a secret pact with Trump. Putin supplied The Donald with anthrax to off Scalia in return for Obama letting Putin have his way in Syria. Trump just did it because he has an agreement with Obama that he will indict her for Benghazi , ensuring he gets elected and then The Donald nominates Obama for the Supreme Court. If someone was gonna knock off the old boy, why on earth would they leave evidence behind....such as the alledged pillow in this case.

Or would it have been to make a statement?

I think he misused the term.  He probably meant above or it's possible he used over when he intended under.  He did specifically say the Justice looked relaxed and his bed clothes were unwrinkled.

I'm sure if a pillow had been covering his head that anyone would've found that suspicious.

Heart attack can be brought on by suffocation or if the person was not in the best of health, there would be no questions asked if they die. A autopsy should have been performed as a standard operating procedure. There are also drugs that can give a heart attack and will be hard to detect.

William Ritchie, a former head of criminal investigations for D.C. police, wrote on Facebook that several aspects of how the death was handled didn’t add up, according to the Washington Post.

“My gut tells me there is something fishy going on in Texas,” he wrote. “Did the US Marshal check for petechial hemorrhage in his eyes or under his lips that would have suggested suffocation? Did the US Marshal smell his breath for any unusual odor that might suggest poisoning?”

Suffocation and Smothering & Forensics
Generally speaking these two practices will occur - as we have already touched upon - by placing something over the mouth and nose of the victim to prevent them from breathing.

This can be anything from an assailant's hand to a pillow, plastic sheeting or even a plastic bag - basically anything that can and will restrict the flow of oxygen into the lungs and likewise to the brain.

In these cases where a forensic pathologist is called upon to try and determine the cause of death one of the first things he or she will do if there are no discernable wounds or marks is to check the deceased's eyes.

If suffocation or smothering has taken place then the eyes of the deceased will be bloodshot; this is a common way of accurately determining that one of these methods has been employed.

I don't see anything wrong with how it was handled. A few short yrs ago in my county when we had a dead one we would call the coroner. He'd ask about medical hx, age, etc. Usually anyone over 60-65 didn't get a autopsy unless it was suspicious. By that I mean healthy, foul, etc. If we (medics) suspected something not natural he would ask us and he would show up on scene and determine if a autopsy was needed. If not we contacted pts doctor to see if he would sign the death cert. If he wouldn't the coroner would. In the mean time we called the funeral home and they came and got them.

In Indiana you don't have to have a medical background to be a coroner.

Now any death we have the coroner is contacted, still, and he makes the scene.

Ive had it out with LEO's when they wouldn't let us see a pt. They don't have the medical background we have to tell if they are workable or not.

When someone high up in government dies,
it seems to me that an autopsy is in order

If for no other reason than to assure the citizens that
there was no foul play

After all, none of us was there

Whether a conservative or liberal justice, it should be one rule
on this so everyone knows the real story

I dont trust EITHER party, but thats just me

Wouldn't an autopsy be up to whether the family wanted it. Unless of course there was foul play. The reports of the pillow being over his head are being clarified as above his head and between the headboard, not covering his head as initially thought by some. Some people don't want their loved ones cut up in an autopsy. To me it's no big deal, once you are dead you are dead. But I understand how it bothers some people.
Also I think it's a good thing this death didn't happen in California. The conspiracy theories are flying wildly with it happening at a hunting ranch in conservative Texas. Can you imagine the reaction if he had been at the Waldorf Hotel in San Francisco ?  Shocked

It's initially up to the authorities (if they want it, they get it).... then the family (keep in mind that most murders are between family and friends).

Most old who pass naturally never get one.

No clear evidence of foul play.  He had undisclosed medical problems, but they did not seen major.  He reportedly had a full day on his feet out and about, and that may have done it.

I wish they had at least done fluids lab work first, before blowing it off entirely.
