52 years ago. Ross-my brother called me last week and said-I'm sending a box to you but ya can't open it til yer B/D. W T H-O K. It arrived via FedX Friday Feb 12. Curiosity grabbed hold but I held on and waited til this morning to open the box. I wuz gonna go treat myself to breakfast at my favorite restaurant BUT the cage was still covered with over 5/16ths of an inch of ice from yesterdays freezing rain debacle that was STILL goin on this A M. So after brewing up a pot of coffee opened the box. It was my hand written notes from my U S Navy "A" school at N A S Memphis at Millington Tn. Those notes a couple of recruit photos-when ZACKLY did I git THIS old-a graduation photo of my "A" school class-some prom photos of gals whose names I CAN NOT remember-some small black and white photos of the bay at Sasebo Japan-some "stuff" and some letters I sent to Mom and Dad from overseas-and a trip down memory lane I had almost forgotten. He had found all this stuff about 2 weeks ago when he was cleaning the garage. Near as I can tell It's made a half dozen or more moves with him and he has zero idea WHEN it came into his possession. Let's just say I'm HAPPY beyond belief his ex did NOT git hold of my stuff. And because he is a GOOD brother he took from his own supplies 2 N O S P-38s STILL in the original paper wrappers and the one I opened still has that light gray paint on it. At the time I joined the Navy 3 M O S Ratings HAD to have "A" school to advance in rate. I was in one of those 3 M O S Ratings. I was an A M-E and the other 2 M O S that HAD to have "A" school were Medical Corpsman and Parachute Rigger. So Ross-thanks for unwittingly hanging on to something for me that I "thought" was lost to the ages. And there was one Picture I'm particularly grateful for-A 10 X 14 of our Mother. Again Brother-THANKS.

I'm glad it made your day.
Seeing old pics of parents or even grandparents is always nice to have around from their much earlier days. Why is it though that most old pics in the 1930's or older show both so strict, formal, and unhappy in their faces, no smiling allowed way back then, especially on the men's side?

I was wondering if someone would chime in and ask.......but MacDragon gave it up.

Went through Millington Tn. "A" school in first half of 1968 for Electronics. Pretty sure RP#62's Dad was an instructor there then. I went through boot camp on the North side just before "A" school. Naval Air Reserve. Oh and thankfully I got a "dear John" letter while there. It all worked out for the best but at the time I was not a happy camper.

I knew of the top 3, got me on the bottom one. But based on the comments in his post....I knew it was the can opener variety he was speaking of.

# 2 HAS all kinds of regulations with HEAVY fines if shipped W/O F F L. While # 3 would be nice I'm thinkin it would have to be torn down to fit in a FedX box! AND I KNOW I can't afford the fuel to do it justice. And # 4 made me wunder! And # 4 also don't believe FedX got a box THAT big. Sooooooo numero uno IS the winner. As to the other Aviation type Sailors that went thru N A S Memphis-Thank You for your Service. I rememr standing one of my first mid watches out here guarding those school hulks and how cursed damp and cold it could get. Course it got damp and cold on a mid watch at N A S North Island. RIDE SAFE.

Yup, a P38 (Range Rover); I own one. Made from 1995-2002. Mine is a 1997 HSE Vitesse 4.6L, in yellow if you didn't notice. They are all wheel drive, and built like tanks . . . literally. Great winter vehicles. As far as the military can opener for rations, if I remember correct there was one in every case in the Army. And I think there was a large P38 opener in about every 10th case. I never could snag one of those big ones.

Close. Actually we had moved on to NAS Norfolk (sea duty) by that time. My old man was an instructor there in Millington in the 1962-1965 time frame. If you saw an obnoxious little kid hanging around the base in that time frame, it was probably me. My old man used to take me to work with him when he could whenever I had a day off from school. For what it's worth, me and both my younger brothers were all born at the Navy Hospital in Millington in the 50's and early 60's (as opposed to my wife who was born at the Navy Hospital in Whidby). -RP

Hey RP what's 3 or 4 years at this stage of the game? I was just a little off. Thanks for clarifying that. Lot of snow in Millington in early 1968 for this old Florida boy.
