Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: February 26, 2016, 10:17:32 AM »

UPDATE: The place we'll be visiting in Vicksburg for that special BLT closes its kitchen at 6pm after all instead of 8pm. That means we're going to move the meet time there up to 4pm instead of the previously mentioned 5pm...

DDT

Ol' Troutdude called me and informed me of a place in Vicksburg, MS, that offers a BLT with fried green tomatoes that is claimed to be the bomb! Yep, and with no more than that little bit of information, a ride done sprung up! Saturday March 5th we'll be riding up there, then after dining getting a room in Vicksburg. Sunday morning we plan to ride down to Lorman, MS, and have some mo' fried chicky and fresh veggies at the Country Store. A gastronomic tour sure to please any palate!

If there is any interest, Dennis or I will update info on actual location, ETA, etc. At the moment we're just figuring on pot-luck on a motel room... If that changes and we decide to make reservations after all, we'll update that, as well... Any takers?

DDT

P.S. I don't plan to lead the ride, so we should find the places OK and make decent time doing so...

For your future food driven explorations.

There's  a really good hole in the wall close to the Natchez Trace somewhere off the top third.

I can't frickin remember it's name or anymore details.

I ate there years ago.

If I remember correctly it was a country store/hot food/live music at weekends place.

That should be enough details to warrant a google and a ride  cooldude

If you're talking about the northern end of the Natchez Trace near Nashville, you or someone posted somewhere back in the mists of time a link to the Loveless Café... I have it book-marked for future reference!      http://www.lovelesscafe.com/eat/menus/

If that ain't it, then more cyber exploration will be necessary. I've learned long ago that when you speak of food, I need to pay close attention!!!

http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Reviews/1320/old-country-store

Alton Brown said it best: "It ends in Lorman, MS. That's the end of fried chicken, and I will never eat fried chicken again. Whatever the voodoo is, that makes that chicken the way it is, I don't possess, and I would just rather not have it again. It was like Colonel Sanders pole dancing. There was something real sexy going on with that chicken. I don't want to have any more chicken. I'm gonna have that chicken or no chicken at all, no fried chicken at all."

I understand you weren't talking about the Loveless Cafe but I implore any of you to consider it sometime if you have not eaten there. Best warm homemade biscuits and preserves I have ever had (and an endless supply at that!) and really good fried chicken. Our experience there a few years ago on the way home from InZane was quite memorable.  cooldude

Bruce check out the Econo Lodge Vicksburg. Has good reviews and the rates are not bad. We might can get a group rate.

Days Inn & Suites Vicksburg looks good also and they say they have a view of the river.

OK, y'all, here is the info... at least as it stands right now...

Dinner, ETA 5pm: (The place is open 8am - 8pm)

'Tomato Place'
3229 Hwy 61 S (between Warrenton Rd and Mattingly Rd)
Vicksburg, MS

Motel:

Econolodge (Rate $65 or a bit less with any discounts, AAA, AARP, etc.)
3959 E Clay St (South side of I-20)
Vicksburg, MS  39180

The phone number for the motel is (601) 634-8438. I didn't actually call that number myself, however, as I made my reservation through Trivago. We'll most likely arrive at the motel first and check in... then go for our dining experience later. The late time was chosen so any riders from far away would have time to join us...

None of us have ever been to either place, so let the adventure begin!!!

Jeremy,

Glad you can join us! I'm guessing we'll arrive in Lorman around 11am or so Sunday. Since we'll be coming down from Vicksburg, we won't have far to ride, so it'll likely be a wee bit early. However, if we aren't there then, please don't give up on us! If breakfast runs a bit long, or if we get to kicking tires too much at the motel that morning, we might not arrive until noon or thereabouts... Looking forward to seeing you there!!!

Ain't it so!!! I thoroughly enjoyed the tire-kicking session on the motel parking lot last night in Vicksburg! Sometimes we just stumble into a situation where the chemistry and characters come together at just the right time and in just the right way... and magic happens! Last night was such an event, at least it was for me...

It started with our arrival at the motel Saturday afternoon... and appetites were whetted with greetings and back slapping, big-dogging and introductions of those we didn't know. We then all rode down to the Tomato Place for a special BLT (no tassles on the sandwiches, and mercifully none on the gal who helped us either!!!) Reviews on the sandwich itself ranged from Fantabulous to OK. Perhaps the best feedback came in the form of one of our group actually eating two on the spot!

It's not a place I'd personally frequent, even if I lived close by. However, it is a place I would return to on occasion... more of a novelty place than it is a gourmet meal destination... even for most of us rednecks...

This morning the group sort of split up... Some riders went to the Windsor Mansion Ruins, while most of us rode through the Vicksburg National Military Park. Darryl led us on the primary ride most of the way, and for me at least, I felt that old familiar feeling of profound sadness and regret at the events that caused that calamity we refer to as the Civil War.

I say Darryl led us most of the way, because three riders got powerful hungry and left that group at one of the stops inside the Park, so they could head directly for the chicky place! That might be considered tacky or a breach of etiquette by some folks, but to my way of thinking it is just plain alright and hunky-dory. We're there to enjoy ourselves, and one size ride itinerary doesn't fit all... Everyone should be free do whatever he/she wants, as long as it doesn't endanger anybody else.

Few people can stand in the way of Crazyhorse when he is ready for some yard bird, and he just had to go! Tom Jordan followed him, and, well... A certain bug killer was, apparently, ready for some grub too, so he tagged along with the other two.

Everybody met up a little later at The Old Country Store and concluded a fine meal, some stellar fellowship and comradeship, and then the herd of cats that had formed some semblance of a coherent group scattered in all directions.

The reviews and facial expressions left no doubt that those who came were glad they did. For those who couldn't make it, you missed a good'un!!!
