A relative of my wife contacted me last week and asked if I wanted his 98 Valk Standard.  Not being flush with cash I asked what he wanted for it.  He said, "well it's been sitting a few years (Three) and I don't really want to spend the money to get it running.  I'd sell it to you for $1000."

When my heart started beating normal again I of course told him, "you know you could get a lot more for it with out doing anything to it."

He said, "I'd know I could but I know you like them so are you interested?"

Pick it up this morning, had to rent a trailer as my 8' won't quite fit it.

26,600 on the odometer, I've got the sissy bar for it.  New Metzler tires 3 years ago and a new Yusa battery, 3 years old.  He put stabil in the tank before he parked it.  Got it home and check the tank, no rust, the tank is still 3/4 full but the fuel looks pretty bad.  Throttle cables stuck, choke cables stuck.  When I check the battery it still had 10 volts on it so hopefully I can save it.

Wife wasn't please I've got another project but I'm remodeling the bath for her and it's something I can ride solo instead of hauling out the I/S.
Plan on pulling the tank draining the gas and see what's sticking the throttle and choke cable's.  Was planning on pulling the carbs too but now I may just see how it runs depending on what I find.

I'll do fluid changes and i'll need to check the rear brake.  He rebuilt the back caliper and said the rear brake seems to lose pedal after a could times braking.

Ramie,
You are one lucky dude. The only things my relatives leave me, is the check when we go out to a restaurant. Have fun with that project. She's a beaut!

I'd stick a hose in the tank and siphon the gas out, add fresh gas and ty to fire it up if it were me.  Add a large dose of techron maybe to clean things out, then take it from there.

Nice Snag!

After taking the wife out to dinner I pulled the cover on the carb linkage and the cables are fine it's the throttle linkage on the carbs that are sticking.  They move really hard so I'm pretty sure the carbs are gummed up.

I attribute the good luck to the 01 standard user manual I gifted to RAM this Christmas.  I checked and the user manual is under the seat along with the tool kit.  He also gave me a hard copy of the Honda service manual he had bought, there's not even any grease on the pages yet.

SCORE is right, congrats on the steal of the century.

And here I thought 4 years ago buying a 2008 250cc scooter with 8300 miles on it for 1000 bucks even was a SCORE??  At the time, it was worth 1600-1800 bucks and the guy asked 1800 for it, but when I found out he was moving in 2 weeks from WI to Florida last day in November VERY cold out was going to snow 2 days from then and stating he doesn't have the means to transport it down there, I knew he would take less since NO takers so late in the year am sure.  I asked him what he REALLY has to get out of it, and he said 1 grand will do.  I told him, after I drove it - ran well,  to hold it one day and I'll be up with 1K cash tomorrow and drive it home before it snowed the next day in early December.  People thought I was nuts around 40 degrees out going to snow the next day driving a scooter 40 miles home in the cold and windy weather.

Wife didn't like it too well though, but since that 4 years has gone, I now have almost 13,000 miles on it and still runs well nearly paying that 1K in gas savings vs. driving my truck (63 vs. 17 mpg)

Somehow,  I think your 1520cc vs. my 250cc scoot, you got the better deal by far.  ONLY thing I gained over you is mpg.   Grin

Pulled the tank while the wife was painting the bathroom.  Was really surprised tank is like new.
As you can see below the petcock and the first gas drained from the tank, looks perfect.
I guess Stabil really works well, (3 years sitting)

As long as the CP (Chief Purchaser) wasn't missing me I went ahead and pulled the air box, then kept going and pulled the carb bank.  Of course I had to pop the float cover on one carb just to see and it was pretty clean BUT!

Found the float valve stuck so I pulled the cover on one of the needle jets and the vacuum slide was stuck.  It didn't take much to pry it up and the needle really looked good.  It looks like I made the right decision to pull the carbs, it's my guess that every float valve and needle jet will be stuck.  It's been quite a while since I smelled the stink of the that old gas in the carbs.

I ordered a de=smog kit from redeye, figured I might as well do it while the carbs are out, also ordered some float bowl gaskets and I already have some intake O-rings.   I also happened to have 6 float valves so I'll replace them also

I do have one question, I noticed when I pulled the airbox that the boots are lose.  Does there need to be a good seal there, I seem to remember seeing a post of someone using gorilla glue to seal them off.

Just a quick update, the carbs are all clean and going back together just waiting for a few parts from Redeye.
The worst part were the slow jets, they were plugged solid, I soaked them and blew them out a number of times but finally had to take my smallest welding tip cleaner to my sharpening band sander and sand down the first 1/2" so it fit through the one slow jet that wasn't plugged then cleaned the others.  I almost bought the Honda jet cleaning tool but the cheapest I saw it was $60.

Will be installing the shinny desmog kit from Redeye this week end and replacing the vacuum lines that remain.
I'm planning on following the manual on adjusting the pilot screws, can any one tell me of a portable RPM meter, can I just use the Tach on the bike?  I've got an old dwell / tachometer tool but I'm not sure if will work on the bike.

Anybody near you with a DigiSync you can borrow ? They work like a charm and have an accurate tachometer.

  Hey Ramie,
to clean out carb jets a good 'tool' can be made from taking a wire out of a wire brush , only one needed and pushing that into the end of a wooden match stick.  This 'Hi-Tech' tool works wonderfully .

Got the bike desmoged and carbs back in, checked for leaks found none and it runs.   Cheesy   Took a bit to get it started but finally figured out I had a fuel delivery problem.  For some reason petcock not delivering enough fuel in run position but works well in reserve position so I'll be pulling that out and checking it.  I've got a cover set around someplace and another screen.  Still need to flush out the radiator, change the oil and filter before I take it for spin.

The kids asked what I wanted for my birthday, CP wanted me to get a motorcycle dolly so she could move the bike out of the way if she needed to.  I told her it's my birthday don't want no stinking dolly I want a Digisync so my daughter ordered me one, hopefully Bons is not backordered on them.  Once I sync the carbs I plan on using it to adjust the pilot screws and fine tune the bike

Working on a bathroom remodel also so when the CP is around have to pay attention to that tho my head is out in the garage.  Looks like I still have some time as winter has returned to Minnesota.
Thanks for all the help everyone.

You really should set your pilot screws first, then do the carb sync. Should have set those pilots while you had the carbs out since they're underneath the carbs and kind of a PITA to get at. You don't really sync the pilot jets.

Should have mentioned that I did set them at 2 1/4 turns out when I reassembled the carbs.  Just looking at the manual it says once I've done that I should check the sync of the carbs then adjust the pilot screws.  More than likely I could get by with them set as they are as it seemed to run fine but I like to mess with things.

Ramie,

Just an FYI, that Operator's Manual will be traveling to INZANE with me and will now be donated to VRCC as something they hopefully will benefit from.    I have acquired the correct year manual for my bike and no longer have need for the one you gifted me.

I'll also be donating a tank bib I no longer can use.    Paying forward seems to have it's own benefits.   Wink

Nice to hear from you Gary, hope every things well with you and your wife.  You still have the other Valk and the slingshot?
Trixie is doing well, had to replace the rear tire had pinhole leaks in the treads and I've added a few things but she still rides like a dream.

Just a Dooh! moment about the problems with my petcock.  I was taking care of a water leak in my bathroom remodel, (I hate plumbing) and it came to me that if I expect the bike to run in the run position I need to put more the .9 gals of gas in it.

Just a Dooh! moment about the problems with my petcock.  I was taking care of a water leak in my bathroom remodel, (I hate plumbing) and it came to me that if I expect the bike to run in the run position I need to put more the .9 gals of gas in it.

Good catch.   Wink

Another successful test of a functioning petcock.   cooldude
