Gold Rush family patriarch John Schnabel has died at age 96, Quite the guy. I always enjoyed him.

"We couldn't have asked for a better father, grandfather and overall family man," the Schnabel family tells PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. "He was a true legend and we appreciate all of your love and support as we celebrate his wonderful life."

Yeah, been watching it since Todd and his Dad sold their stuff and headed north.

John Schnabel was a steady rock for Parker, huge loss for the kid.

He DID get to see his grandson become a successful gold miner. Looks like he had a full life.
RIP grandpa.

That is sad news indeed.  Cry Always enjoyed him on the show as he was just how many old time Sourdoughs in AK really are. I like his grandson Parker also. Hope he keeps a level head about him with the fame.

This is a shame.  Just a great guy and got to live life the way he wanted.  He also brought up a great and terribly hard working family that are all successful in a tough place to live.  One can not put a parameter on the

Been a huge fan of the show from the start especially being home bound during the cold winter months.

Rip Grandpa Schnabel.  Your legacy lives on
