I have some good friends from church, non motorcycle folks who have been retired for a few years and they are thinking of moving to North Carolina.  I'm not sure why as they know no one there.  They are not really interested in the Outer Banks, they're from Minnesota, small town folks looking for a good place to live.  Up here we are used to forest and trees, good medical facilities and they would be interested in recommendations on a good place to settle where they might fit in, any recommendations out there?

I wanted to go back to the Lake Lure area after we came thru there on the lost lunch ride. Also liked where we were around Asheville. If it was me I'd be takin a trip and do some exploring. Hope they find what they are lookin for. I've been to Mn. In the winter-I KNOW WHY they wanna move!  Roll Eyes RIDE SAFE.

Look somewhere around Asheville, Brevard, Hendersonville... North Carolina
is eat-up with forests and trees, they should have everything from the beach
to the mountains to choose from... They might even want to look at
Greenville SC...

They'd do better tax and cost-wise in TN.

Plus, Joe is just crazy about Yankees moving down.   Grin

If they are not interested in the coastal are, then there are a lot of hills and woods in the west. The whole state is pretty and some friends have moved there. Some of those friends have since moved to Tenn or S Carolina due to the tax situation.

Lake Lure is beautiful but, has limited services and health care options.   Mountains are beautiful and so is the lake but, pretty much a summer resort.   Have a sister that owns part of a mountain there with three rental cabins on it.   Great place to be and ride in warmer weather, not so much when the roads get slick.

Ashville is where I'd be looking or further south in SC.   Better tax situation there.

Asheville is the best if you want good health care, entertainment, and dining. It is also expensive for housing, more crowded and a progressive environment that is quite liberal.

Hendersonville and Brevard are a little less hectic, less crowded and have more of a traditional southern feeling to them. All around these areas are beautiful woods, parks, and mountains. Pisgah Natl Forest, Dupount State Park, the Arboretum, etc.

I have rented a summer home in Leicester, 15 minutes from downtown Asheville for 6 years and like the country feel and city convenience it affords us.

In between Asheville and Hendersonville is Fletcher and a few other unincorporated areas that are worthwhile to consider.

You're close to the BlueRidge Pkwy in all these areas and the Pisgah Inn for views and dining. You're also close to Mt. Mitchell as well. All in all, this is a beautiful area. Can't go wrong here.

If they must be near the ocean then OBX can be trying due to the relentless wind and propensity to get hit with storms and Huurricanes.  I wouild look for an area more sheltered by storms like some of the coastal areas in GA.
Now....... if I had my druthers I'd be heading West.  Western VA, NC, SC, Northern GA, Eastern TN just caint be beat.......I plan to die somewhar up there.
This Redneck Riviera's got me beat.  Too hot, crowded and more and more crime ridden.  Need to retire first before I move cause this is where my career landed 18 years ago....3.5 - 4 years and counting.

What is the tax situation there?  How much different is South Carolina from North Carolina?

Compare property taxes, sales taxes, food, rent, energy costs, medium incomes, and property values..   While I live what NC has to offer near Lake Lure, NC, that would be my "summer" place.

Just had a close friend move, had to decide between the two states mentioned, he chose SC for all the above stated reasons.    He also lives right on a big lake at Anderson, SC.    A bit warm and humid for me in the summer but, he loves it.
