My favourite of his was "Let's Go Crazy".

When I refreshed my browser I saw Britman already broke the news.

I'm sorry to hear of anyone (except a certain select few) passing away, but I must say I was never a fan.  Still, may he RIP.

While his radio pop wasn't my cup o' tea, he could play guitar with the best of 'em.  Check out his guitar solo here.

It was 1984.  My girlfriend ( first wife in 85 ) was giddy.  She told me she had won some hollywood premier theatre tickets to the first screening of Purple Rain from a Los Angeles radio station.  It stared Prince.  I said who.  Had never heard of him that I remember.  I do not think he was playing on the LA rock stations at that time.  Stations, especially rock could be quite finnicky at that time.  It had only been a couple of years since I moved from Detroit where I was a member of Dread.  Detroit Rockers Engaged in the Abolition of Disco.  Ah yes a young Arthur Penhallow was proud.

Anyway we went and I was quickly amazed at the tremendous talent of the Kid.  I had no idea he could play a guitar like this, and quite a few other instruments to boot.  I found myself so enjoying the movie.  I am sure I had tears in my eye at the end of the song Purple Rain the way his guitar just weeped. I Instantly was a Prince fan.  He still had it at the Superbowl in 2007.  Eric Clapton was asked by an interviewer some years ago what it was like to be the best guitar player on the planet.  He responded he did not know, the interviewer should go ask Prince.

Rip Prince.  Left us way to soon.  Seems to be a trend this year for musicians.

I never could stomach the guy! I won't argue that he could play many instruments and had musical talents, but so did Charles Manson, I thought his acting sucked, he just didn't impress me at all. He seemed to me, like an over confident person looking for his niche, but never could find it, tended to be a legend in his own mind. Just my opinion!

If you think your statement was Politically Incorrect it clearly illustrates that you have no idea what Political Correctness means.

Your statement was quite simply boorish old chap.

I think that saying, or something like it, is more broadly used than in the US South.  I've usually heard it as, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."  Usually it is applied to artwork, performances, and how people dress themselves. I don't think anyone applies it to discussion of political ideas.

Please explain EXACTLY what you deem political in dreamaker's original post.

Considering he sold more records than these people that one might say had found their niche, I'm not sure the "over" in over-confident applies.

Sold fewer records than Prince:
Paul McCartney
Kenny Rogers
Janet Jackson
Julio Iglesias
Chicago
The Carpenters
Bob Dylan
Dire Straits
Bryan Adams
Def Leppard
Cher
Lionel Richie
Genesis
James Taylor
Olivia Newton-John
Stevie Wonder
Linda Ronstadt
Tina Turner
Donna Summer
The Beach Boys
David Bowie
The Who
Barrie White
Katy Perry
Santana
Earth, wind & Fire
Johnny Cash
...
and a few lesser-known artists

You can unbate your breath.  I was only making the point that your Southern expression is more universal than that, not stating that dreamaker was commenting on politics.

Not aimed at you, Britman:
I think it's uncouth to use a thread announcing someone's death to slam the deceased.  But maybe I'm just politically correct.

Kanye West sold more than any of those listed and millions more than Prince.
Prince had a 20 yr. head start. I don't think I ever heard a Kanye song.

I didn't care for his music either, but, that doesn't mean anything.

It appears he never forgot where he came from and he was talented. Got to give the man credit for that.  Seems the media is saying he died from an overdose of prescription drugs.

At 3:30 is where Prince steps in.

As always, it is hard to define "talent" and "creativity" . . . but  you know it when you see it.
