Pretty young thing, second year college almost done, very bright gal and has a mind of her own when it comes to guys. Right up front with a new date, she lays down the rules and the biggest one in her mind is constant attention to their cell phone. She tells them if they get into their phone while on a date with her, she'll warn them one time to put it away. The second time the evening is over....period, no exceptions. She said a few times they really complained and her answer was a winner in my view: "If you're feeding at the tit of AT&T all the time, you don't need my company."  I guess some of my genes have passed to her through my daughter.  cooldude

Along that same line, since my Rita is doing poorly as of late, her son and wife came over from St. Pete Friday evening to check on her. Her son is OK I guess, but what bugged me was all the time they were here, he was checking his phone every couple minutes, constantly doing something with it. His wife hardly touched hers, she spent her time with Rita and me. I finally asked her son if he came over to see his mother or is it because he gets better reception on his phone in the Orlando area. He got a bit miffed but got the message. I really don't care about his feelings and he knows it...."son, you're here for your mother, not the phone company. Now is your chance to show it."   Angry

My daughter Toni has met him and lets just say she sometimes has no filter. Again, my genes....at times.  Grin

Some of my friends the same age as me, early 60's or older, in the mid 70's have developed the same dependence upon the frickin phones.

I hate it.

Sounds good to me John.  cooldude My oldest tried-ONCE-texting in Church.  Undecided ONCE. Long as she was under my roof-now married-she never did that again.  coolsmiley As a clarification the oldest from my 2nd marriage. Sounds like the Granddaughter has her head screwed on perfectly straight. Good on her-she IS more important than a communication device. Butt head don't deserve her. RIDE SAFE.

nice granddaughter, way older than her real age in terms of doing the right thing and staying off those darn phones.

Both my kids are glued to them both in high school while at home.  I just don't get it at all.

I finally got out of the stone age tad bit over 6 months ago and got my first smartphone over 7 years with the same flip phone previously.  I would not have done it but with US Cellular can get a smartphone a few bucks cheaper per month vs. a flip phone going to be a dinosaur in a few short years am sure.

Good on your grandaughter!! People are slaves to their phones and if someone can give me a good reason why I will listen. It has been said that for some people it makes them look and feel important. Great invention lousy use habits.
My brother is a college basketball coach. He interviews kids for scholarships and says that he can't ever talk to these people anymore without them answering the phone while in the interview. He said if it happens he warns them the first time. The second, the interview is over and so is the scholarship. The phone has become more important than the funding and the chance to play ball at a top ranked college.

The same goes for me.  We've come a long ways since the pay phone and booths.  Why are cell phones conversations so important now. My kids have them and awhile back Mark, Chris, and I went to a restaurant. Both of them were on their smart phones.  I told them if they started texting each other, i was leaving.

I don't normally interfere but I get a pissed off attitude when my conversation is superseded by a damn smart phone, even in my family.

A few months ago, in church, there was a lady in the pew in front of me texting during the Service.

The worst thing, tho, is texting while driving.  It's one of the reasons why I quit riding.  How do we guard ourselves for that kind of stupid action by drivers?

When I am chairing a Board of Works meeting, it gives me great pleasure to tell all to turn off their smart phones. Sometimes rules are nice.

John, on another note. I can appreciate your steadfast devotion to Rita with all the problems that she has.  My sincere prayers to both of you.
