I've been wrestling with the thought of getting a new bike.  My body is rejecting the weight of the Valkyrie and some of the maintenance tasks.
While looking around I found it very difficult to find anything suitable.  All makes and models were considered.  Too small, too big, feet forward controls, no support for the back ect.
A 2014 CTX 1300 for $7900 new caught my eye  so I started considering the pros and cons.  While at the dealer I commented to a friend and the salesman that we pick a cycle  with more thought than picking a wife.  The next day I went back to get more of the particulars and ultimately decided against  the  CTX.
The friend found out and commented that I made it to the alter but got cold feet.  My girl wouldn't grant me a divorce.  I never got married either so I thought that was an interesting comparison.
My girl didn't want to share me with another so keeping both wouldn't do.  In the end it was an easy decision.   There is nothing out there that can compare, nothing that will fit me like my match made in heaven.   So I guess it's  "Till death do us part".

My usual riding buddy has a nice 84 Goldwing Standard. He was in an accident about 6 months ago, (woman pulled out of a parking lot right in front of him) and banged it up, both him and the bike, not too bad. He just won a decent settlement and is considering a new to him ride. A few years old would be good. He likes the Victory lineup, we'll see. I keep telling him that there are quite a few cherry Valks for sale on this site....you never know....

Been there, done that, good bike.  Not a Valkyrie though. It will probly outlast me.  113300 miles on it. Gave 2500 bucks for it.  Hoser

Theres nothing like 'em, at any price.  My 97 turns 20 in October (built Oictober 1996), almost a true classic!

I have a 75 and an 82 Goldwing. The 75 is a project, but was on the road when I tore it down. The 82 Standard was my daily driver until I bought the Valk. Now when I get on the GW, it feels SO SMALL.

if not riding 2-up, what about a  newer honda 700 mid-sized cruiser and someone on here has one and says gets over 60 mpg as well.

http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/mcd/5553487286.html

Is fairly cheap at 4500 or so and would be a great commuter/mid-range cycle I think anyways??

Plus, is a Honda and should last forever right?

That 700 is an automatic transmission.  Same as the 1300 but auto.  I could keep the Valkyrie and buy, they'll only give me $1750 for my bike.  It's a 99 standard with 146,000 miles and they don't really want it.  Salesman said "you and I know you can get a lot more out of the bike but someone coming in to buy it doesn't know that".    Should have told him there's only 46,000 miles on it.
If for some reason I get stuck on the side of the road I'll be saying coulda, shoulda, woulda.

oops the 700 is chain drive too.

I will ride till I fall off or until I croak as long as parts are still available when needed.

If I won the lottery I will have a new 911 but the bike will be the same with a few upgrades of course........and maybe a Valk bobber to keep her company as well.

I feel your pain man! (But it hurts so good!)

I sold new and used bikes at a full-line dealership for a couple years recently, and even being surrounded by shiny new bling of every description there was NOTHING that I would trade my Valk for.

A very realistic solution!

Have you looked at Triumph?  I'm liking the Thunderbird LT
http://www.triumphmotorcycles.com/bikes/thunderbird/2015/thunderbird-lt

I have 2 Valks, an I/S and Std that I made into a touring bike.  My wife rides the Std.  She has back and knee problems and the Valk is getting to be too much.  If I were to get something to replace my Std, this Triumph looks like the solution for me as I would like to ride it also.  Always liked the vertical twins and 1700 cc's.

Or, my wife is talking trike.  Would be cheaper than a new bike.
