Why? Why did we resume diplomacy when they didn't change a thing? Why are U.S. cruise ships lining up to go there and why are U.S. citizens lining up for a cabin?
Cuban-Americans can't go there. If you escaped and made it here, or if Castro kicked you out with the criminals and mentally ill, you're banned. You can, however, go back on the cruise ship to visit family and friends still there. This would be the ONLY reason I could see booking a cruise.
But why would anyone else want to go there? Cuba already has vacationers come there from Canada, Europe, South America, etc. They can also trade freely with the rest of the world. Yet the people still live in ghettos. Do you think the money spent by U.S. travelers is going to make a difference in anything other than the Castro bank account? Why would Americans want to contribute to that.
In the big scheme of things, Cuba is nothing. It's non-threatening and he's not changing so why not just leave it alone?

A few weeks ago I got an email from my liberal California older and retired sister. For retirement she travels the world. Said she was going to Cuba and was so excited. Stones and Obama would both be there. I could only question why would you want to go to that hell hole. All Gman said is correct and it is a lot worse. First she gave me and my sisters a phone number to someone who may be able to get a hold of her if something came up as her phone would not work there. What she did not say is the state would not want capitalist calls coming in or out from the outside world. Doubt she figured that out. Wonder if she got to witness the many hundreds of reported disidents being rounded up beaten and thrown in prison during her visit. I know this was high on the obamantors list. Oh wait - think he did not mention it. Guess the commies want to keep it between themselves. Anyway I worried about her but she made it back ok. Will see her over the 4th of July at our Michigan 1 week family get together.
I have a lot of friends up in Midland, Michigan from my youth and high school. We played a lot of softball together after school years. One of them was a Cuban friend named Art and we nick named him Cuban ( quite original ) Heck of a basketball and softball player. His family escaped just as Cuba was going down. At the docks the military was not going to let him leave. His father, mother and sisters could go but they would not let Art go. However his father was able to bribe a soldier with a water melon. We have always joked to people that do not know Art that he was traded for a water melon.

No, we should sell our territorial interest in Puerto Rico to Cuba for a buck two ninty-eight. Let them share the socialist dream together. (You know...... Third World For Everyone!!)

RIDE SAFE. Like I said, Cuba gets vacationers from all over the world. People on vacation spend money. They are also able to trade with anyone they want. All those car parts that are so hard to come by, and anything else the rest of the world makes, can go in and out of Cuba without us being involved. In a world with a population of 7 billion, why do they need money from little ole us? Why is it only America's money that Cuba needs? BTW, my daughter was there just last month for a week with school. I haven't been able to discuss anything with her yet as she's been real busy finishing up (she graduates this Sunday!) and her grandfather passed away so she had to travel to Nigeria (in the middle of finals, she's worked real hard, very proud of her).

I had thought it would be a cool source for old cars until I watched a show called Cuban Chrome where they "Restored" three cars. Never mind. those cars were basket cases before and after the restorations.

I don't want to see us bailing out Cuba and still think we should pursue financial reimbursement for those who's assets were stolen by the socialist regime, but as far as normalizing relations with Cuba? I've got no problem with that.
As Frederic Bastiat famously observed "When goods don't cross borders, soldiers will."

Fidel sucks, he always did. Raul is 80 something, he'll be taking a dirt nap soon with his brother. There is a chance, since the soviets cut them loose and these two ass h_le$ croak The USA could help bring some sort of change for the better in that country. It really never was a democracy.

Yeah, they interview a Cuban guy with an old Chevy. Asked him how original the car was and he replied "not very". It even had a motor from a different make in it (want to say Mercedes).

On the show, one guy was running a boat motor in his car, which over time destroyed his frame. He was using it as a locals taxi cab. He was trying to fix it up so he could taxi tourists. Only the "nicer" cars can taxi the tourists and join the car club. The cars are the best that amateurs, using primitive tools, in less than optimum conditions, can produce.

I've no problem with normalized relations with Cuba. I believe we have embassies in Russia, China, and a number of other nations that are working hard to destroy us. At the time diplomatic relations ceased with Cuba that nation had been actively involved in military threat to the U.S. and her allies. I don't think that situation exists anymore since we have taken in the outcasts of Cuba.
I do, for a certainty, believe there is no need for us to provide monetary assistance to the Cuban nation. I think it's good that our citizens can choose to visit there if they wish. The Caribbean actually contains a number of poverty stricken countries to which Americans choose to go and spend vacation dollars.
