Hey guys, as some of you know my son comes up every year from TX and we ride the smokies for a week,, well this year we are riding through the Rockies and I would like to get from you guys some of the must ride roads and the must see places, we will only have about 3 days riding so I want to hit the must go to places...
15 years ago I went to a little town up on the mountain and camped at a campground, it was about 80 degrees when we went to bed and woke up freezing our butts off in about aa 1/2 inch of ice,, i remember the town had a casino in it and it was way up high in the mountains,,of course we will hit pikes peak and mt Evans.. any others? and we will hit the great divide ...o yea the train ride through that big gorge,,, wow been a lot years ago...

Trail Ridge Road is great Grand Lake to Estes Park its 50 miles. Both towns have something to offer. There is a Phantom Canyon Road down by Cripple Creek but its not paved as far as I recall. The gold mine next to cripple creek is a hoot for 20 buckS 1000 ft down... nice tour too

If you're heading west out of Denver (25 miles), take U.S.40 north at the Berthoud Pass/Winter Park exit.
Head up towards Steamboat Springs and you'll get all you can handle for a great July 4th weekend in a truly all-American mountain resort that knows how to throw a great parade.  You MUST make your reservations now for lodging or camping as those fill up rapidly.

The reason I suggest Steamboat Springs is threefold: 1. We used to live there. 2. It will get you well away from the crush of the I-70 corridor and all the stress/anxiety/bumper to bumper on a holiday weekend. 3. Two hot spring options to soothe your body, heart, and head (one way out in the country that is remarkably beautiful).  All the amenities that you want in town and all the places you want to see out of town.  Coming off of Rabbit Ears Pass when the Yampa Valley opens up on your descent into the valley floor is an incredible sight with Stagecoach Lake and State Park below you and a full vista of the valley in front of you.  Do you fish?  Worth the ride out from Denver (about 4 hours with stops).
Believe me, it's crazy out/up there from Denver to Vail.  So, once you are out of that environment, you can begin to enjoy the mountains, the clean air, and the crisp nights up in the high country.  Get a condo on the mountain for a week if you can, it's cheaper.
Yes, Steamboat will be crowded, but not crazy crowded and you can ride south on Colorado 131 and hit Vail on your way back.

The Colorado DOT has  a "motorcycle skill rating map" both online and in print at the welcome centers.  I found it to be a great resource while riding there last fall.

It's not the bike it's the rider. That said a botched curve can kill.
