Not a new character, has been in the comics for years. Introduced in Fantastic Four #52 (July 1966).

Yeah, but he was invented back in the days when comic
book characters had to have corny names...

Ah yes but:

According to a new theory making its way around the internet, Marvel [Comics] character Captain America is owed $3 million by the United States Military.

The online buzz began when one Reddit user posted the [assertion] that the superhero was owed millions in back pay for his service. The [argument] details that after defeating Hydra in World War II, Captain America was lost for six decades between 1945 and 2011. Since he was technically not discharged, the [thesis] argues that the government owes him back pay for the 66 years [during which]] he was missing [in action].

The [putative reimbursement] garnered a lot of attention from fans, and the Army issued a response.

Guess where you can read the Army spokesperson's response:

As all G retroactive benefits are paid at the rate(s) payable for the year/time in question (not at current rates), this back pay would not be as much as many would think.

In VA, it was not that unusual to find a WWII or Korean vet getting 10 percent for a serious through and through gun shot wound.  When informed that the back pay would be calculated at the rates payable during all those years past (spelled peanuts), this would always generate anger and disbelief.  So many of those young men came home wounded but on the mend, and they went back to work and did the best they could with their injuries, and took what VA gave them with no appeal or complaint.  Then, with old age setting in and these old wounds catching up with them, they would file for an increase (for the first time) thirty years later.

In WWII, captain's pay was $200 a month, with a $90 per month housing allowance with dependents, or $75 a month with no dependents.  A PFC made $54 a month, and a Master Sgt $138 a month.

And awards of back pay would be taxable, awards of retro VA disability would not be taxable.

Since I have seen no original WD AGO 53-55 (the old WWII DD 214), Capt America cannot be given veteran status.  However, his civil suit against the US for being used as an expiramental test subject for hormone growth (even with his consent) is probably worth a fortune.

While I agree, she's super cool, I'm getting dizzy watching that video.   No, I don't wish to turn it off.  Smiley
