So tomorrow night I'm taking my eldest spawn Kali to a "concert" for Hatsune Miku. This should be interesting.

Hatsune Miku is a vocaloid.

A computer program.

For the concert the computer does the singing, backed by a real band on stage, and the singer is a computer generated hologram.

Since someone has to program the computer I'd argue it's still art, but definitely different from anything I've seen before. Should be fun, or at least interesting.

Anyway, no real point to this post, just thought I'd share and help broaden some horizons as to what the kids are in to these day. (In her defense, Kali loves "real" music too.)

Yeah, it's pop, but I actually find myself liking some of the tunes too...

(Video of some old folks seeing her for the first time is also entertaining: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHhluDhVtjU )

Hey Serk, what's your definition of "old?" Grin  I think what bothers me more than this type of music is what seems to be an overall lack of a melody or tune in the majority of today's songs. I constantly tease the two brother that own/run the gym I go to, the stuff they play on the speakers is sometimes hair raising. I tell them if I'd known years ago that making all that noise with no melody or intelligible words would go over so big, I could have been a multimillionaire. As for the video, I've seen that kind of stuff in the past....it's definitely different, not sure it's enjoyable but to others..........

Its cute, but kind of sad, that now the new generation is idolizing something that is not real. I guess its better than idolizing drug addicts and prevs. the people do today.

imho "idolizing is exactly what is going on at a lot of concerts these days. Its almost scary the hold some entertainers have on their audiences at these large arena concerts. What makes it worse is when the "entertainers" step outside their spere of expertise and begin prosletizing ontheir political and moral beliefs, like they have some sort of actual knowledge of what they speak. And of course the crowd eats it up like its truth.

That very well could be true. It's been many moons since I've been to a concert. But I guess we are going to see Kid Rock in a week. I'll leave the idolizing to others though.

Think about it! For the amount of money people spend on tickets, what would you call it, not just this particular concert, but others. I have never been to a concert.

Back in the 70's I was going to go to a concert at Cobo hall in Detroit, don't recall who was playing, I looked in the window of the concert area and seen the people crammed together like sardines. That was the year those people got trampled to death at a Who concert in Cincinnati, OH. I said no way. I have been to places like Eastown, Grande Ballroom, Grande Riviera, which was free moving or on the river.  Not like todays concerts, to confining! Don't get me wrong, if it is your thing, go for it, I am not saying its bad for you if you enjoy it.

That... was... INCREDIBLE!

I know, definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but that was just awesome...

I've been to a LOT of concerts, some REALLY good ones from some REALLY good bands (And a few mediocre ones) but I have NEVER felt as much energy in the crowd as I did tonight...

Few seconds of video I shot with my phone just because:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMPHUOrEJ0U

And now I'm gonna go pass out and sleep...

(And NOT my video, but a small segment from the same tour as the one I saw tonight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5V1TwewnFk )

I thought it was kind of interesting, was your concert reminded me of a 1981 movie called "Looker" with Albert Finney and Susan Dey made the Sifi movie a reality.

glad you enjoyed it and more so your daughter am sure.

I was thinking of going to see locally coming up the Def Leppard and REO Speedwagon concert but after I saw the cheapest nose bleed tickets near 90 bucks,  I thought otherwise.  Some upfront tickets were going for 400 bucks or more - NUTS!

I remember when tickets were 20-30 bucks tops some 20 years ago, and my pay salary has not tripled in those 20 years either.

I was hoping for 40-50 buck tickets but not spending near 100 bucks on a 3-4 hour concert or so.

crap, hard to do anything or go anywhere for under 20 bucks nowadays besides maybe fishing which most of that is gas money in outboard and driving to and from the lake.

An obvious difference being in this case, Miku has real talent! Wink (But seriously, big difference being they're not trying, at ALL to pass Miku off as a real person or singer)

Interesting review from a local rag on the show we saw: http://www.dallasobserver.com/music/hatsune-miku-the-animated-vocaloid-who-headlined-dallas-should-run-for-president-8304566

Curious, the pics/vids make her seem about 7-8 ft tall.  Is that about right?

Solves a common problem at concerts where you cannot see the performers (unless you like the stage rush/crush bit, which I don't).

If not even taller... Although there's a live band on stage with her, she doesn't interact with them, I'm guessing to keep from making the size difference stand out too much but yeah, she's definitely larger than life (In more ways than one.)

I'm resisting the urge to ride to Houston tomorrow right after work to see her again in Houston Tuesday night, then ride back home right after, get in a nap and go to work on Wednesday. If I were ten years younger I'd probably do it...

Necro'ing this old thread, I know this isn't the kind of thing that interests most of ya'll, but in case anyone IS interested, Hatsune Miku is coming back to North America in 2018. LA, San Jose, Dallas, Austin, DC, NYC and Mexico City... Tickets go on sale early January (At least they do for the Dallas show, and oh yeah I'll be there!)

Here's more info: http://mikuexpo.com/usamx2018/

I would love to see the show but I CANNOT do crowds anymore. I start to get really anxious and the closer and more crowded it gets the more I want to lash out, hard to explain. I have to have a certain amount of space and concerts do not allow this.

(Old thread necro)

Taking Kali to see Hatsune Miku again tomorrow night in Dallas, and I'm so excited!

Seriously, check the current tour, and if she's coming to a venue near you you really should check it out, it's a glimpse into the future... (Literally, her name roughly translates as "the first sound of the future")

Here's a video of the entire concert in LA a few days ago:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jrtOBM97X4

...I can't believe I'm this excited to see a computer perform, but.... here I am.

Hey, I have that album in my old collection Smiley

Yes the times may be a-changin', however I like to think that the future of music or entertainment in general is still safe in the hands of younger generations of talented folks coming up who will continue to write great music, play real instruments, and perform their songs live for those that want to hear regardless of whether they make it "big" or not...that's just my opinion.
Like these guys for instance...been around for a bit getting their music out on You Tube, recording,  and playing smaller venues and festivals. One of my go to riding music artists (gotta keep an eye on the speedo when playing this song though... Smiley)
