Right to the point: My TV remote controller does not work in temperatures below about 55° F.
The longer story: I have an old (about 1985-1988) color console RCA TV in my detached garage. I do not have the original remote controller. I use a Panasonic/Quasar tower universal remote controller (from about the same decade--I have numerous VCRs/remote controllers). The Panasonic/Quasar tower universal remote works great in the summer. But not in the winter. When the temperature in my garage drops below about 55° F, the remote does not work at all. I have put in new batteries, so that is not the problem. I swap the remotes with others in the house, and they all work fine in the house (where the temperature is around 70° F). But none work in the garage when it is cold.
Can someone explain why the TV or the remote control does not work in cold temperatures?

Maybe it was made in Mexico. Maybe it goes on strike for higher temperatures? Why are you watching television out in a garage in the middle of the winter? Wife problems? Too many R rated movies? You are part Eskimo? You like your beer naturally refrigerated? You're a big fan of the Trans Siberian Orchestra? Please, give us a clue. ???

Your cave needs heat. Problem solved. "1985-1988" I think you've got your money's worth out of them. JS

No idea why but, I'm happy just to find the remote where I think I left it.........
Maybe some day, someone will come up with a "clapper" type device to make it easier to find the damn remote when my other half decides to put it up. Probably too much to ask or hope for but, it is, what it is...........
My bet is, you don't have that problem out in your garage.

Batteries are weak in the cold?
- put in new warm batteries and see if it works until they cool down...

The springs to keep contact with the batteries can change tension when cold. A bad or poorly soldered electronic connection will loose contact when cold. Sometimes a bad electronic component will not work when cold. The new batteries are not supposed to leak but I have seen them leak to the point of almost destroying the piece of electronic equipment they were in. Acid on the contacts or dirty battery contacts can also cause this. Use a hair dryer to warm it up and see if you can find the location when it starts to work. That will give you an idea also. Batteries when cold loose 60 percent of their power so bad contacts can mean alot. Logitech has a great universal remote called the Harmony that works with almost anything and is pretty intuitive when set up. I know this for sure, my wife actually doesn't have to much problem handling the remote and being able to watch the DVR or a movie or the TV.

I like the idea of the remote also being a Tazer. If somebody lets it slip down in the couch or they put it where it doesn't belong, automatic 400 volts.

solution: keep the remote in the house where it is warm until you go out in the garage and use it.
Or, try wrapping the remote in some lined insulation making a nice warm happy home for it in the garage.
Most homes are not below 60 degrees thus normal remote controls don't need to be in below 60 degree temps.

Or, maybe the problem is with the TV, and not the remote

My dad had vast experience with remotes... Back in the 50s, when we were probably the first family in our neighborhood to have one, dad would feel like doing a little 'surfing', so he'd... point to our TV and say, "Bruce, see what's on the other channel..." If the 'remote' ever balked or failed to respond promptly or appropriately, mention of his belt was all that was required to solve the problem! Good luck...

You need a remote like my dad had, one of his six kids.

I have a remote for the stereo in my unheated garage. It works fine throughout the year.
