Boxing is one of my favourite things to watch. Real, natural, gifted boxers are a Wonder to behold. Ali was, without question, one of the finest talents ever.

Clay was one of the greatest boxers of all time, credit is given where, credit is due.
He was also a "draft dodger", some things are forgivable.    This is not one of them.

My condolences to his family.

Did not then nor now agree with his politics however

To me  a draft dodger ran to canada and didnt go to jail which was the price  Being against the war he would have no part in support no matter the position he may have been offered

He went straight to jail, for better or worse, that said something to me about his willing to walk the walk  He was stripped of his title and ability to fight.  That took gumption to be reviled in that climate.

A pic of him standing over Sonny Liston on the canvas in their 2nd fight is in my office

Exactly. A draft dodger he was not. Ken Norton was my favorite boxer of the time. But Ali deserves our respect in life and death. I would have thought better from a "Southern Man"  coolsmiley

What he did was wrong no matter how you slice it...what he did for the sport of boxing is paramount. The man passed away and my condolences to his family. He is a legend.

Well said Hooter.
He refused to go to the Army when he was drafted. There was a whole lot of boys drafted that did go black and white.  All he would have had to do was tell them he did not believe in war and would not carry a gun, and they would have made him a cook or a mechanic packing the wheel bearing on the old mans jeep, he probably wouldn't have left the country, but he could have served same as other boys did that got drafted. He was no better than them.   I want the freedom this country provides me to follow my dream but NO way am I going to stand up for it.  Might have been his religion too, islam HATES America. Maybe he was following that mindset .  He said "no VC ever called me a N***** , maybe so but I do know the VC killed plenty N****** over there.  Somebody should have told him that.   JMHO.

Most of you don't have a clue about this man's life.
I met him in NYC back in the 70's. He was kind, playful
and made extra time, away from the cameras, to sign
autographs and have pictures taken with the kitchen
help after the banquet.

It took a lot of courage to take a stand against, what he saw,
as an unjust war. Of course he could have pulled an Elvis, and
had a very easy duty. 3 years of his prime boxing career were
taken from him, so it's not like he didn't pay a price.

I won't check back on the flaming, because I will probably
say some things I will regret.

That's an excellent picture.

Reference doing the "right thing", Clay took the only path that would allow him back into the ring to box for the Championship and money again.    Not an honorable man IMHO.

Muhammad Ali – The most famous racist to ever box -OR- Criticizing Ali is racism

I always perceived him to be somewhat racist, esp looking at that he usually gave much more worst beatings in the rings to whites than he did to blacks.

He's dead.  Back in my day people of honor did not speak ill of the dead.  Nor will I.

There is much to be admired in the choices he made in a lifetime and there are many choices that are very different than I would have made.  He's gone now and it is up to Someone else to judge him, not I.

If one was unwilling to say something before the demise, then one should keep their mouth shut afterwards.    I don't think this is the case.   Everyone passes on, to think no ill has ever surfaced after their demise is like sticking your head in the sand.   If this is the case, a lot of people should be apologizing for comments about JFK, Hitler, Malcom X, Marion M. Morrison, MLK, Chesty Puller and even those who we were close to, as in family members.

Must be too soon.   Actions always speak louder than words but, one should expect others to speak of them honestly after they pass on.   It's all about perspective.   Apparently honor is included in that.

I said what I thought and meant.   Clay was a great boxer but, the lack of respect he got is a direct reflection of his own actions.   He's just as responsible for them now as he was when he was alive.    As are we.    But now, it's interesting to know I can expect only nice things to be said about me after I have passed on.   Wink

Saying something nice about the departed is not required.  In the days when honor meant something my mother would tell me, "If you don't have something nice to say, say nothing at all."

I think it is appropriate at times to say nothing at all.  It takes discipline for me to do that but sometimes I choose to do so.

I do agree with your assessment.  There are a lot of people who do indeed owe apology to the civil public.  Wink

I will admit that I have gone to at least one wake just to make sure the (son of a bitch) person was indeed deceased.

But I said nothing to the family of the deceased of a negative nature
in fact just the opposite, as befit the occasion

Jane? yeah I suppose I wont shed a tear when its her turn either

Carl Rams Baldo and Meathead also in agreement eh, I just checked, hell has not frozen over, and the clock is ticking in the living room so its not broken

Maybe the stars are just aligning for another wonderful Inzane experience as they should always do.

I met Ali a number of times. His stock and trade when posing for a photo was to say, under his breath, "Did you call me "N I G G E R?" It was good for effect and resulted in many memorable photos.
Ali was a racist and played the "race card" his entire life.
Ali was a great fighter. Rope a dope was a strategy he did not invent, but used successfully. He also changed his game plan to suit the opposition successfully.
Ali lived many years in Kalamazoo and seemed to mellow with age, the way old buildings, boxers, and hookers do...
Didn't agree with much of his politics, sorry to see him go. Boxing is a different game since he's been gone.
RIP, Casius.

What ever you think of him, listen to your parents, if you don't have something nice to say don't say it, once you say it it's hard to change, I wish he would have went in like Joe Louis but he didn't, he paid for it. He did do a lot for the sport and politics also, RIP

Baldo I never said he wasn't a good boxer. That he was but he was also a draft dodger. Period despute fact. And for the one that say don't say any thing if nothing good horse crap, that is what is wrong with this country today, too much PC crap.
Why is it that his death is covered and spread all over the news? Is he anymore than a man? Did you hear anything on the new about my high school history teacher on the news when she died? Nope because she was a person as he was. So why is he glorified? Because he was a draft dodger? Nope because he could box. Whoopty doooo.

Wink

Just wait until Cheney's heart stops pumping......oh, the prose.....

When Cheney goes, it probably won't be reported, well, except by Fox and then half the country won't believe it.

I tend to 'attempt' to keep my mouth shut on things like this since although he might have done good/bad things in life,  we all have,  so why should he be singled out since he was famous.  I may think bad thoughts or suggestions, but unless provoked,  tend to keep quiet for the most part.   Sometimes you just have to leave it be for sake of argument not being worth it in the grand scheme of our lives cooldude

This is probably about the only statement Piers Morgan has made that I agree with.
Piers Morgan: Journalist and Television Presenter Compares Muhammad Ali With Donald Trump in Tweet
"Muhammad Ali said far more inflammatory/racist things about white people than Donald Trump ever has about Muslims," Morgan posted Sunday.

Whats that got to do with anything? We are comparing people who are well known and how they are treated by the media? I don't see the connection!

Trump is currently in the news every day, running for Pres and taking big heat for his racist comments. Ali was a fighter that had his own racist views. You should be asking Morgan why HE made the comparison.

Trump unfortunately, is more than just a well known person. He's running for the most powerful position in this country..... THAT'S the connection.... coolsmiley
