Author Topic: Love my GL 1500 but like Tourer even better...  (Read 706 times)

« on: June 09, 2016, 06:14:09 AM »

I recently purchased a beautiful 1998 Valkyrie GL1500 that I'm very happy with but looking closer at other Valks, I'm starting to think I should have looked for a touring model.  Having said that, I'm curious if the hard bags from a touring model can be fitted to a non-touring model such as mine. Can the hard bags that are standard equipment on a touring model be found anywhere for this purpose? I'd prefer not to use after-market or soft bags.  I have a Memphis Shades windscreen that I find is just right for me, so All I need is those hard bags if they can be adapted to my bike.  If it means selling my standard GL1500 and just looking for a touring model, I'll leave well enough alone and keep my Valk, which I'm very happy with.  Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yep, try to find someone that triked their bike, any Interstate or Tourer bags will work and bolt right up provided you get the brackets.   Check your local Craigslist and also eBay as well.  They can be had.

Yes they can. I started with a standard and now have a full blown tourer.

I got a good deal on good bags and mounts at a local trike builder.

Call around...

While you're at it, locate an Interstate Tank for that Standard, I guarantee you'll love the end result.    cooldude

I just happen to have an extra but, I'm thinking it might be sold.

Like you, I should have bought a Tourer or Interstate - so I built my "Tourerstate"
This one started life as a standard in 1998.

These folks are a great source.  They run an EBay business, but you call direct (unless you enjoy auctions), tell them what you want, maybe bargain a price (or pay buy it now).

I needed a wheel, and got one quick... medium price.

Yup, what they said. Also check our Classifieds section.

Some have had real favorable outcomes with quality aftermarket hard bags as well that may include brackets.

I myself went with Boss Bags many, many years ago and haven't looked back. I was a fan of leather bags but didn't care for the Leatherlikes (hard plastic bags with a leather look, prone to cracking) that many had or the leather sag that eventually came with the actual leather bags. The Boss Bags are a rigid leather product. Not for everybody. Some have even had their oem bags and aftermarket bags leather wrapped. Those look very nice.  cooldude

So keep your standard and make her the way you want.

Here is a set of bag mounts on Ebay right now, no bags though. Price seems reasonable. No affiliation with seller. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-Valkyrie-Luggage-Rack-/282062885752?hash=item41ac421378:g:4PAAAOSwbYZXUi84&vxp=mtr

I saw a set of mounts and bags on craigslist in California. I believe they were in Fresno. One of the bags was missing a lid.  The guy was asking $500.
