My daughter has a boss, (military) who rides and in their discussions, it was discovered that both he and I were riders. So, he offered at that time (months ago) to hook up and ride sometime should the chance ever come to fruition. Apparently, he has not forgotten that offer, he found out that Mom and I are visiting my daughter down south in Hattiesburg, MS over the 4th of July. He called and I accepted the invitation. I mean really, who's going to turn down an invite like that? Now, the part I'm concerned about. I live in Central Kentucky, what many would consider to be a slightly milder climate. Southern Mississippi is not a mild climate IMHO. It's frigg'n hot out there!!!! Was hoping for a nice evening ride but Noooooo, we're going out for a long ride right after lunch. I'm not concerned about my Fat Lady keeping up with his HD, I'm concerned the Fat Lady's rider is not ready for the heat out there. Yes, I'll stay hydrated and wet my shirt at every opportunity but, I'm not going to let the herd mentality take over. I don't want to embarrass the Fat Lady though. Wish me luck. If you don't hear from me for a while, good vibes, thoughts, cards and letters will be appreciated by my survivors.

could be a sticky situation there riding with your daughters boss on a HD no less. Do NOT show him up on your Valk or other sayings since you want to keep your daughter employed right?

He's the post commander and sought her out to apply for the job so, I feel pretty comfortable about not embarrassing her. I'll have a talk with the Fat Lady and make sure she understands why we won't be passing his HD today. This assumes the heat doesn't effect my Fat Lady's rider.

To ensure the Fat Lady gets respect, trade bikes for a bit and THEN let the Fat Lady kick some HD butt. The commander will never catch on as he gleefully zips by.

I wouldn't 'just in case' one of you get in an accident for some unexplained reason on each other's bikes which could create conflict. Remember, he is the daughter's boss still. Plus, make sure both have medical expense if you swap bikes since without it could get sticky as well. I do NOT have medical expense on my cycle or scooter since will not let anyone else drive them ever 'just in case' accidents do happen.

Generally speaking, I don't swap bikes (especially for a V Twin) but, it's too frigg'n hot to enjoy riding now anyway. Rode to the meeting place, said hello, told him he had a great looking bike, swapped lies and then told him the truth, it's too frigg'n hot for me to enjoy a ride.
We spent about 45 minutes swapping lies, kick'n tires and wiping sweat off our brows. He smiled and said, I agree. We went our separate ways. Not sure about him but, I headed for an air conditioned shelter. I'm not acclimated to this heat and I'm not sure I'd enjoy riding in it if I was. It's one thing to travel through when you need to get some where. It a whole different story when you're just out there for fun and staying focused on keeping hydrated and cooled as much as possible. Doesn't make for much fun on a ride that was intended to be fun.

so how hot is too hot to ride?
My limit is around 90 degrees, but will do for shorter rides in low 90's not over 1 hour drive or so.
I'd rather drive in 40's than 90's for temps.

How hot is too hot? Well, that depends on a lot of factors. Temp, humidity, winds, available shade, the length of the ride (was told this one would be 6 to 7 hours), what I was doing during the time before the ride that may have dehydrated me, and how I feel. Today was not a good day to ride on unknown roads with unknown experienced/inexperienced riders in temps and humidity (both being very high) after I mowed two + acres of grass. I was already feeling fatigued. If I remember correctly, the Wx man called for 98 degrees and 80% humidity and light winds. It was enough for me to say a regretful no thanks today. Tomorrow I might feel differently about the same ride. Spoke to a friend of mine this afternoon and we talked about this ride. He said, you're a wimp. I replied with, experience and discretion are the better parts of valor. Finished watering the trees I planted here the last time I visited, most survived. Five gallons on each of approximately 60 different trees and shrubs wore my butt out.

Ya know what they say, "ride your ride". Only you can decide. We spent the better part of the day in the saddle, 90°+ here, but it was good ride

Ninety to ninety-five degrees is perfect for me. I've found that if one limits or removes that plexiglass sail from the front of the bike the ride is much more enjoyable. We do have a lot of women that ride in the VRCC and I do understand why they need all the comforts. I just don't understand it in an adult male. I'm a little different than some. I really don't like air conditioning that much. Now and then someone will ask me how I feel about windshields and backrests. I tell them I wouldn't drive a cage without them. Ride your own ride is good advice, but don't be satisfied to stay where you are on that spectrum.

Hey Willow...I invite you down to ride in South Mississippi, pre-dusk, when the hard shelled bugs resemble small low-flying birds. Bout 20 miles worth of splats, hard nuff' to rock you outha' the saddle, will make you fall in love with that windshield. It ain't just for wind!!

Been there. Done that. Try not to jump to conclusions about what will or will not convince me to become like you or someone else.
