Excessive comfort breeds weakness. PttP

WWW
« on: July 06, 2016, 12:42:53 PM »

I've had some conversation with some of the other VRCC staff.  I believe I have their support.

This is a general message board.  There are no particular subjects that are out of bounds.  I have read over the Rules of the Road and I interpret them to say that communication needs to be respectful.

We have members who frequent this board with views pretty well across the entire political and social spectrum.  We have for some time endured bashing posts from both extremes.  It's unacceptable.

Political discussion is fine.  Posts that appear to have a primary purpose of ridiculing those who disagree are not acceptable.

Some time back there was a post made encouraging members to report posts they found offensive.  It didn't work as well as we had hoped it would.  Rather than report posts a lot of members simply stopped coming to the board.

Beginning today I will be removing posts that appear to have a primary purpose of ridiculing or demeaning those who disagree.

I've been told that may bring the level of participation to a crawl such as happens with some other boards.  I do hope not.  We carry on good civil conversations with one another in person.  Let's try to do the same here.

The U.S. government guarantees freedom of speech.  The VRCC message boards do not.

If one cannot live with that one can feel free to find someplace else.

As much as I agree with you, I guess it's just a sign of the times. Now days it seems that so many need their "Safe Spaces" that we are no longer allowed to speak freely because we might hurt somebody's feelings.

It's not about somebody's hurt feelings.  It's about respectful behavior.  If you were to come into my house and speak disrespectfully to me I would first ask you to leave and then I'd throw your ass out.   Wink

I guess I should tell you that I speak more freely than likely anyone else you know but usually I try to do so with respect.  Well, at least most of the time I do.

I can certainly understand if people begin name calling against those who they disagree with, but what I disagree with is that if I refer to Hillary Clinton as "The Hildabeast" that is now forbidden. While this may not be very flattering to her, it is in no way disrespectful to you or any other member on this site, but it's now forbidden because it's a "Pet Name".  Really? That's just silly.

I used to get the same "flack" for just putting quotation marks around president when referring to Obama.

The woosification of Americans has even affected us bikers.  It has become more important that no feelings get hurt or our site not be labeled a certain way.

I agree with you, non profane references to political hacks being forbidden is a step to far for the VRCC  management group. It is unwarranted, and smacks of censorship without a valid reason on the general board. The old crap about my board my rules is a very poor excuse. Have some backbone and ban political discussions if that is what you really want to do. I have no problem with that  but censorship, I do not play that game as it is always a LOSER.

Yep, that high.  You edited out the decimal.  6580ft = 2005m or 2.005km. I use the handle 2KmHighMark on some boards.  Given the recent herbal rules promulgated by our "progressive" friends and californicator immigrants, it might have a dual meaning to some.  Yet I assure you, I don't imbibe just because I can.  I need every brain cell I have left, after a wayward youth and military adventures.

Don't know if I can refer to our "progressive" lord-masters in anything but derogatory terms but maybe I can with clever wordsmithing.  Have to dig out the thesaurus.

After some discussion with my friends I have removed the reference in the original post to deleting a post solely for the use of demeaning names for someone that other members support.

Honestly the intent is to get us to think about what we post in terms of how we would communicate face to face with our friends.  I see it happen respectfully at gatherings and believe it would do us good to do so with the written (typed) word as well.

I don't want to reduce the participation on the message board to only those who agree with me on political or social issues.  It would be nice but the three of us might get a bit lonely.

Discuss, interact, exchange views and values.  I think we can do that without asserting or implying that those who disagree are stupid.

For the most part I do not post a lot in the forum, mostly because I do not have much to say I think is worthy of posting, never want to post just because or to bore the folks here to death.
However, that being said, I do not care for most political, religious or gun posts and therefore try to avoid them when possible (subject indicates what the post is about) it works well for me, but in the past myself and a few other members have suggested that the Admins make another page, (I know entails work, and I don't envy your jobs Smiley  ) and I suggest again that there be a page for just readers rides, a place where the good folks can post pictures and write ups of their adventures without them being pushed to page 2-3 in an hour after posting by political or other BS.
Willow, you said that the reporting of offensive pages/post caused lack of audience participation in the VRCC, well if you truly look into the VRCC past it has also happened due to all the political, religious and gun post that seem to have taken over the board and rule it now.
Many of our members that used to frequently post their adventures no longer bother to here, it all winds up on Facebook, because there it does not get drowned in the other BS.
I for one do not have Facebook so I miss out on a lot of good stories that used to appear in the pages of our VRCC.
So again, if we could make another page (Readers Rides, I like that title) and keep it strictly motorcycle cruising that would be great and I am certain I am not the only one who would appreciate it. That way the General Board can stay the way it is and we who do not care of everyone's opinion about Trump, Hillary, the latest gun or whatever can still enjoy the very reason this Club came into existence, sharing the wind and the adventures we had with our Valkyries.
That's my .02 ++ cents and I am sticking to it.
Thanks  cooldude

I agree with Ice. General Board should be about motorcycles "in general".
A friend moderates a Lincoln board, anything off topic is immediately deleted.
This board has very little MC content due to the same people debating religion and politics every day, the few actual MC posts are lost.

Yes, we need a political/religious page and keep the general board for those who like to talk about motorcycles and adventures/ other shenanigans. Anything political or religious can be posted on the political/religious board. This is the easiest way to deal with this. Just have to have some willing administrators to put it in place.
