Very sad indeed. It's a shame he didn't have a gun or phone with him.

Sikeston ain't all that far from my home 20. Very sad indeed. Hope the perps pay DEARLY for their crime. When I stayed in he Motel 6 in Hannibal Mo. last night the desk clerk let me park under the check in canopy and she also had T V coverage of my M/C. Shame a M/C theft got the man killed. R I P BRO. RIDE SAFE.

This is very sad. I hope Larry Weaver's family will eventually get over this senseless loss. I'll just leave it at that, I have more to say, but this isn't the time or place. So sorry for the Weaver family.

Sorry to here about this. But it will not stop me from traveling alone. As I get older, I like to set my own pace on the road, riding fewer miles each day on long journeys. There are times when a stop is in order only fifty miles from the last fill up. One has to take care of the body as well as the bike.
Over night, I make sure the Valk is parked in a well lit spot within sight of my room. I carry a full cover to put over her and a disk lock to make sure she does not inadvertently roll away...

I always get a room on ground floor and park outside the room. And a half cover and fork lock.
And at lights out, curtain is open enough to see bike.
If someone is fooling with it, they may discover a little laser dot on their chest.
Fortunately, Valks are among the least stolen bikes extant. Thieves are mostly idiots.

Ditto. Except not the half cover. Crimson Trace has released their much brighter green laser grips for J-frame Smiths recently. Not cheap. But much brighter than the red; good in daytime. Quality product. Even a snubby with 2" barrel is pretty accurate when aimed by laser. .357mag is no round to sneeze at. BTW I got stopped in Ottawa KS on returning from Inzane for doing a rolling stop. The state trooper asked if I was armed - yep, sure am. "What & where?" ".357 j-frame Smith, strong side belt carry". I open the cover, he reaches for it, I said "Ok, if that makes ya feel better". "Yeah it does." Told him, "on my 3rd 5-yr CCW, 13 years and somehow none of my guns have decided to shoot anybody." He chuckled. After sitting in his patrol for the obligatory 10 minutes, he returned, shook my hand (that's a first) thanked me for carrying, and said "That's a fine pistol. You're gonna save somebody's life some day. Thanks for being a responsible citizen, practicing at the range, and helping us. Here's your ticket. I'm setting your pistol on the trailer, appreciate if you wait until I'm gone to pick it up." He must have been low on his quota. Really thought I was gonna get a warning. Especially with my veteran's plate. Betcha he hadn't seen the new green laser grips before, on his salary.

My Smith 360 (.357) has the red dot. I got a green dot for a .45 carbine and it is better in daylight, but still often hard to find at any distance. Fortunately in daylight, it has a red microdot sight and irons. The green is bright enough to light your way in a darkened house. IMHO, a laser and Jframe Smith were made for each other. I never get invited to sit in the cruiser anymore either.

My Glock is red. I have buddies that carry lazer pens and not a weapon. Still pretty impressive with any red dot where you can see it, specially in the 10 ring.

Was thinking of carrying the red pointer too. If you did illuminate someone from the motel window (messing with your bike) (or some such) and they called the gendarmes, you show them the pointer.
Flashing aircraft may be unlawful, but as far as I know brandishing a pointer pen is not an offense.
The red pointer pen made a chronic late night dog pooper (in my yard) pick a different dog walking route.
The green is certainly brighter, but red is more than adequate at self defense distances at night, and nearly all bad mojo happens at night.

I suppose ... Good justify for not spending the $$$. Makes the pistol cost over $1000 and I have 2. It's way brighter and more obvious to the perp as well - might even help stop the perp before having to follow the light with a pill (which of course you wouldn't want to do for a theft situation - basically a bluff but the perp doesn't know that). I had been waiting for the green to be released - want to be able to aim my j-frames the same way in the daytime and it's definitely faster and more accurate than the iron sights while being very visible in sunlight. Yeah, use the iron sights too when practicing but if the laser is working in a SHTF situation gonna use it. FWIW the trooper was impressed, this ain't a Saturday Night Special, sufficient to know he was talking to a serious responsible citizen.

This thread didn't go anywhere near where I thought it would when I read the headline. Regardless I'm sharing this software anyway, lol. I've been using it since one of the early Beta tests and luckily I've never had to use it but I think it would be invaluable if I ever did. I normally travel alone, on backroads, at a higher than legal rate of speed, so in many places if I blew away a corner and end up in the woods it would take weeks for someone to find me. This software uses the accelerometer, and gyroscope of the phone to detect a crash and notify your selected contacts of your exact gps co-ordinates. It is a bit rough on the battery, but my phone which was a few years old lasts 8 hours if I'm not listening to music. Disclaimer, I am in no way associated with ESR. http://app.eatsleepride.com/

Ah the good old american solution to all There is NO telling if that would have helped with a gun you are more likley to survive an attack, 90% of the time all it takes is showing the weapon to stop an assailant. I choose to carry at all times to protect myself, my family and innocent citizens. If you choose not to that is your choice, someone like myself could very well save your life sometime.

But either would have improved his odds I think. I think I read in the story his phone was found in his room. It's my impression "youthful" instincts took over when he discovered what was happening and thought he could stop the theft by himself not thinking they would drive away with him on board and by then it was too late and he was out numbered. I know how tough I was in my young time and had several encounters of being out numbered I don't think I could do now (at 51) what I was able to do then. Just think, be smart and stay safe everyone, there are some screwed up people out there.

I'm sure I would done the same. I just thought it was too bad he didn't happen to have his phone or a weapon in his pants. Maybe it would have been different.
