D. B. Cooper that is.  The FBI is officially giving up and closing the case.  If the gentleman is still alive I guess he can stop looking over his shoulder

I think he is still alive.  I have wondered for years if all the inside info I have heard on the matter was real.  Guess I will never know now

I can't believe the authorities could not figure out who he was. He knew too much about the plane dynamics, a few things that were only know by Boeing designers. he made the pilots do a few things that they were never told the plane could do.

There was a pretty good investigation into the case again this past Sunday and Monday by one of my favs, the History Channel, D B Cooper Case Closed.  Hollywood Producer Tom Colbert spent 5 years on this investigation using 40 investigators, including 12 former FBI agents and his findings pointed to one man, that being Robert Rackstraw, who now lives in San Diego.  His pictures from 18 months prior to the Hi jacking are so very close to the police sketch of Dan Cooper.  He was a vietnam helicoptor pilot, extensive trained paratrooper, weapons expert including explosives and several other specialized military schools.  After 7 years in 1971 the military dismissed him because he lied on his application about his pre military education and that was his incentive to show what his training could do.   So many other pieces of info through out the program showed he could indeed be the guy.  In 1979 he was the FBI's no one suspect for the Hi jacking.   In the end the flight attendant who spent hours with him during the Hi jacking said she did not think it was him.  The FBI told the History Channel they were closing the 45 year old case for good and yesterday confirmed that earlier statement to the History Channel.
I am sure the History Channel will re run this in case any want to watch it.

I've worked on 727's and MD-80's, both airplanes with aft stairs. They both have a vane mechanism that will turn with airflow and mechanically prevent the stairs from being deployed in flight. I don't know for sure if the 727 had them prior to Cooper, maybe someone here would know that.

Baldo.  You know much more about planes than myself.  I can only say that in the History Channel special they noted that Air American  (Vietnam Cia operation, Barry Seal, yada ) did use 727s in the same manner that they were deployed for d b coopers jump and Robert Rackstraw did work in Vietnam for Air America and other special ops and covert operations and was well trained to make this jump.  D B Cooper also gave instructions for the 727 pilots to turn their flaps down 15 degrees so the could hold a speed at 10k feet of 170 to 180. He also requested in Seattle to be delivered 4 parachutes of which he chose the military C9 ( I think ) version, which experts testified would have been the one to choose in the forest terrain and to make a jump at this speed.

the prevention was done after the DB incident.

I'm going to have to find this program. It sounds pretty thorough....

Watched the first segment at my brothers place and the 2nd segment In the motel Monday night. Not sure how much $200000 In 71 bucks is today but I'm curious how much was spent in all the investigations over the last 45 years?? WAY more than the original 200G he took in 71. I'm inclined to believe it was the Special Forces guy. They closed the case-can the REAL D B Cooper now stand up-if alive-and admit he did it and not be prosecuted? RIDE SAFE.

I think it was done by emergency AD and I remember the guys calling it the DB Cooper mod.

After years of investigation, the FBI was able to determine DB Cooper did in fact commit a crime and was incredibly careless. However, they could not prove specific intent and could not prove that Cooper did in fact intend  to break the law or could not prove he knew it was actually against the law.

Therefore, no indictment is recommended.
