This sounds like a non issue but its pretty big actually. If you own a Mercedes Benz you cannot buy certain parts for their cars even being an owner. If your transmission ever goes you have to bring it to MB if there is anything to do with the transmission computer. You cannot buy a engine computer, shiftier, instrument cluster, and many other parts. Even all the auto manufactures are suing scan tool companies because they are making scan tools for their systems. Eventually trying to keep all the repairs for themselves.

This will go over well with the hot rod and DIY guys. I have thousands of dollars invested in tools and old Fords. Its my quiet weekend time. Like I told my busybody neighbor, "I could sell the cars and buy ROCKSTAR stuff". My headphones are playing Freebird,,,,,,I don't know what you're hearing, because I cant play guitar,,,but I'm givin it my best.

This is one of the reasons I won't by a new bike. Too complicated to work on and the closest Dealer is 40 miles away. 1500 Valks are "old school", no computer needed. And, their just cool.

I would think if out of warranty and YOU paid for it, do what you want to it since YOU own it, NOT the stealer.
Now, if you screw it up and causes more issues and eventually have to take it to the stealer, then that is another issue.
My Can Am 2008 ATV has a stupid sensor at so many miles the 'maintenance soon' light flashes across the screen at each start and the ONLY way to get rid of it is to go to the Can Am stealership to reprogram it to not come on anymore once start the ATV. Is stupid! I just let it flash and ignore it.
Same way with my former tundra trucks with the seat belt beeping if not buckled. Dealer says will not reprogram software to NOT beep LOUDLY if not buckled up stating safety issue. I got around that by taking the little spring out of the buckle mechanism inside the plastic housing, simple 5 minute procedure. Is stupid to keep beeing at me that if I want to buckle I will, if not, do not need a beeping noise constantly annoying me while driving.
The more crappy gizmos you put on equipment NOT needed, the more stuff will go wrong no doubt about it.
If buying a new vehicle, I get the BASE model since that is all I want and need. Do not need backup sensors or side mirrors beeping/flashing at me or extras like 20" wheels or upgraded sound systems costing 1,000's more. Give me power windows, power locks, power brakes/steering, power driver's seat, A/C, cruise, tilt wheel, and I am all set all I need. All that is pretty much standard on most base model cars nowadays. Fog lamps are nice but can live without them if going to cost say 1000 to get in a package that I do not want besides just fog lamps.

Ugh... don't EVEN get me started on the evils of the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act... The law they're using to say even though you bought it you can't change it, fix it, etc...)

Yeah, the VW........air cooled......no bells.....no whistles....FIXED IT MY OWN DAMN SELF! Now I know I can fix my Valkyrie, because I built it myself. Of course, I couldn't have done it without this forum and eBay and Craigslist. THAT is technology that I can live with. Ride safe.......while you can.....

Most OEMs switched to OBDIII about ten years ago. Most of the cars run data logs similar to a planes black box. Those equipped with third party connectivity, like On Star, can also send this info outside of your car. It's not a big issue YET but most new cars are already equipped to rat you out to the dealer, insurance companies, cops, etc.. pending legislation.
Not to mention what autonomous networks and vehicle to vehicle to grid communication will entail.
So much fun ahead, can hardly contain myself.

Reading some of the comments from that link Boycott John Deere!!! Seriously? Do people not realize every agriculture product group in order to sell in the U.S. has the exact same tier 4 emissions technology. Case IH, Agco, New Holland all have there own system and software in place. My advice.... just purchase older equipment

(Apart from my old JD 644G payloader, but it's yellow so that doesn't count!) But seriously, this modern machinery is getting harder and harder for farmers to work on now, so you end up putting your expensive machinery in the hands of some spotty apprentice and his laptop! I've had more than one occasion where the guy who the dealer has sent out has no idea what he's doing, and I've had to do it for him, and still received a bill from the dealer! We try to buy older machinery, but good used equipment is getting harder and harder to come by.
