I've hunted all my life. I don't consider Bear Baiting and Fair Chase hunting to be synonymous .

Cojones maximus! Still, to really put some sport into it he should try duking it out with the next bear he lures in. And have his wife film it!

Maybe not, but to control population of bears they allow baiting. I would not attempt that because my luck would be the spear bouncing off the bear and then getting mauled by one pissed off bear. My only hope would be to lay down and just hope it wanted to mate me . But there is no way I would do it without a big sidearm.

I didn't see the video of his kill. But most of the bearbaiting I've seen in AK was done from tree stands. None of it was for population control. If it's legal, I'm not going to badmouth a hunter for doing it but I sure don't consider it fair chase. The article stated he was hooping and hollering after the kill. I can understand the excitement of it. But there should be a respectful tribute to the animal. That kind of stuff doesn't help our image.

Yes thats exactly what I mean, bears recently started carrying weapons to protect themselves. If you don't know what fair chase is then I suggest you use google to find out. Then come back and have an intelligent conversation about it. What can you hunt over there in the Netherlands? Stag?

And I understand that hunting is on a lot of locations necessary to preserve wildlife. But hunting with a spear is just plain stupid. It's not like a good clean shot between the eyes or hart or whatever, chances are that it will take hours to kill that animal. I don't like animals being tortured before they get killed.

It's not like a good clean shot between the eyes or hart or whatever, chances are that it will take hours to kill that animal. I don't like animals being tortured before they get killed. It ran 60 yards. Thats pretty damn good, sometimes they run 300 yards or more from a gun shot wound. I shot a deer Iin the heart 3 years ago and it ran 175 yards before falling over. Animals have a huge will to live. You never did say what you could hunt in the Netherlands. What I have read is it is pretty scarce because of the laws and those that do hunt keep it top secret. How do you go about getting a gun to hunt with there? Bet you cant walk in a gun store and buy it and take it home the same day. I'm all for protecting the wildlife and I'm all for hunting to maintain healthy numbers and healthy heards. By no means did this spear make this animal suffer. I bet he was dead within minutes of being stuck. Any hunter knows you could get a bad shot and the animal will suffer. I try to prevent this by only taking shots that are clear and I'm comfortable with. This guy with thespear just didn't pick up a spear that morning and say "I think I'll try this today". He probably practiced for months or even years to get good enough to hunt with it. I don't expect a non hunter to understand any of tnis.

I'm sure that guy prepared himself well for spearhunting. But I still think he was lucky that it went so well for him. To be honest, it just doesn't feel right for me. Overhere we don't have big game hunting, I guess the last bear we've seen was couple of centuries ago. But there is hunting going on, deer, hare, different kind of birds. Yes, we do have laws that restrict hunting, we are a dense populated country, we don't have that many huntinggrounds. So you can get a permit to hunt, but you have to be a member of a huntingclub, practice your skills (you have to keep track of the practice results) and there are a limited number of guns allowed. So, if you want to start hunting here, you will be on a waitinglist. No, you can't walk into a store and buy a gun and bring it home with you. As in most European countries by the way. And no, I'm not gonna start a gun debate here. We're worlds apart on that subject and a discussion about guns will get us nowhere. Let's agree to disagree on that matter.

Thanks F-six, thats interesting about keeping tabs on your practice and being part of a hunting club. I know in south carolina there are large hunting clubs that lease the property. I went to one several years ago with a friend. I agree on the gun debate, I love my guns and won't let them go. Yes we are too far apart to agree on guns.

I know you're being sarcastic, but all I could think was... "Well.. no. Because the bear traded his spear for 5 equally deadly weapons called paws and teeth."

I do remember an old black and white video of Fred Bear taking a griz from the ground at about 15 feet while hiding behind a rock along the Alaska coast. With his old school bow. What an amazing hunter he was!!!!

Yes, Fred Bear was pretty much THE bowhunter. When he took that griz, there was a backup guide with a .375 rifle if my memory serves. Fred wasn't stupid.
I bowhunted many years starting in 1947 and know and approve "Fair Chase" It was great times for me.
The guy with the spear probably did practice but he showed no respect for the bear. Typical' high five' BS and look at me, IMHO.

Every now and then, New Jersey hires "professional" hunters, and I do believe they offer tags to amateur hunters as well to decrease the bear populations in its northern counties. I recall New York, in Sullivan county, doing the same thing, no professionals, but more tags allotted per hunter for bear. But I only recall NY doing this one time.

I remember as a youth going to the Fred Bear Museum in Grayling, MI. I see it has now been transplanted to Gainesville, what a shame for Grayling. On my Uniq Cylce system which includes mp3 I downloaded Ted Nugents ( who studied under Fred Bear in his younger days ) tribute to Fred Bear The Song. It is a quite good rocker, although about the only place it is played are the rock stations in Michigan.
