So, yesterday in a post originated my meathead, MP posted about cigarette smokers quoting the following picture and comment. "Kind of like smoking. We keep hearing about the high cost of taking care of those who smoke. However, I have heard it reported, NOT by cig companies, that if you actually figure out the longer life span of non smokers, by the time you add up soc sec, health costs, etc., that the smokers actually cost the economy as a whole LESS money than did the non smokers, because they did us a fovor, and died early." This morning I open the local paper and find this in the comic pages. It's a strip called Pearls before Swine. I usually think it's lame but laughed when I saw it after thinking of MP's post. Too true Tried to enlarge the strip scan but couldn't. Hope it's readable. If not I can quote the dialog.

My wife keeps on top of me about taking my cholesterol meds...and I keep reminding her that they will only extend my "Drooling Years".

A little help on the cartoon (oops, hubcapsc beat both of us at posting the same cartoon): However, I have heard it reported, NOT by cig companies, that if you actually figure out the longer life span of non smokers, by the time you add up soc sec, health costs, etc., that the smokers actually cost the economy as a whole LESS money than did the non smokers, because they did us a fovor, and died early.
I have argued this for years. Even if the cost is not less, it is certainly exaggerated and fails to account for all the extra tax dollars smokers contribute. I am not advocating smoking (and today is my 25th smoke free day). And you are correct, this argument has not been advanced by tobacco companies--they hate to remind their customers how effective tobacco is at causing premature death.

Lol. Sorry hubcapsc. I read the title of your post and thought it might be political so didn't read it. Oh well, you can't always judge a book by its cover or a post by its title

Following your logic, let's just use lethal injection on people a couple of years after they retire. Exceptions can be made for those who provide a monetarily valuable service to others, such as volunteer work, child care, or successful financial management of their heirs' inheritances.

Damn, you are sounding like you hail from Denmark not Canada. (I understand you are being facetious) at least I hope you are.

i Assume he knew and was being amusing. I was laughing with him, not at him. That's a heck of a picture and topically tropical.

Been lots BETTA with her top off! As to the high cost of smoking-I can attest to the high cost of currently keeping me alive! I have Oxygen cylinders cannulas regulators and a concentrator-all so I can continue to breathe. Oh-fergitted to mention the inhalers. Lets just say-keeping in mind how PERFECT 20/20 hindsight is-wish now I had NEVER picked up the first cigarette! But-perfect 20/20 hindsight-cigarettes are the devils work. What I would LIKE to have is ALL the money back in one pile that I spent on smokes and the supporting equipment. Smoked for right at 45 years so maybe a new Cadillac or a new pickup and change left over to ride! RIDE SAFE.

I won't comment on the cigarette addiction, I've seen too many cases of emphysema which generally can be due to cigarettes.
Emphysema can be as bad as living a 'drooling' life due to strokes, Altzheimers, etc.
There are no good answers to the ravages of aging.

I smoked up until about 28 years ago. They told me I had cancer so quit. Sorta like the horse is out so let's close the barn door.
Testing proved I didn't have cancer, the good part! I never started again. Setting in a bar drinking a beer for me was the real test and I made it.
I can remember saying back then: if cigarettes go to 50 cents a pack I'm done. I don't know how anyone can afford to smoke today? To each his own, not preaching here but I can think of a bunch of things I can do with money saved at today's prices.
Oh, after I quit I put on 25 lbs. So there was a trade off for me. I was thin then (then) so the 25 was good according to my doc. He liked the weight vs the cigarettes.
