I didn't want to hijack Solo1's thread any more than has already. But it got me thinking. In a more perfect world where you could pick the actual person you wanted as President, who would it be ? Limited to living people. I think I would pick Colin Powell. ( let's see if we can keep the bashing to a minimum)  coolsmiley

Ron Paul

Although I'd happily settle for his son Rand.

(that's just limiting it to people who have publicly pursued the job.)

General Wesley Clark (ret.) was my choice 12 years ago but I feel that time has passed him by.
Four less years of Bush and an alternative to Barack Obama would have altered the course of our country for the better, I believe.

I saw what Mayor Rudy did with NYC, seemed that Kasich did a good job in congress and with Ohio, and, I liked Mitt Romney. There are others that would make a good president. I'm not sure why anyone would want that job though.
There are many that could fill that position. A career military person may do a good job there, but, I'm not really in favor of it.

My pick would be an honest non politician, non criminal (could be redundant) with no ties to any political party and has experience managing something that is significant. Some one that gets the job done and tells the truth no matter where the chips fall.

Some one who understands that the americans who wrote the constitution knew what they were saying and meant it.

There are a lot of good folks out there that fit this definition and I could happily vote for any one of them. Unfortunately NONE of them are currently running. And it is unlikely they will ever get the chance to do so.

As an american I am embarrassed by what career politicians have done.

A further thought:

Open a random phone book to a random page and randomly point to a name.

Make that person the president.

But don't tell them. Let them think they're on  reality TV show or something.

Really, we need to change it so the president has so little power that it doesn't matter who they are, instead of having so much power that it doesn't matter who they are.

Shocked Dude have you looked around and seen some of our citizens ? Perish the thought. And while having a system where the executive branch has minimal power might seem appealing, think of the inaction that would result. I'm glad FDR, Truman, Eisenhower were able to do things.

As an american I am embarrassed by what career politicians have done.

The very concept of career politician is in conflict with the concepts of the founding fathers.

I would concur with Colin Powell or Condeleeza Rice.  I'm sure there are any number of others I would gladly support.

LOL, Robert.  I have skeletons.  While it is important to state one's mind it may be more important that one's mind actually works.   Wink

I'd pick Stephen Harper, since being born in the US is no longer an issue.  Maybe Canadian citizenship is good enough to assuage any doubts about loyalty.   He has an impressive resume:
1.  Masters degree in economics.
2.  Nine years leading a G7 country, including the legislative and executive branches.
3.  Canadians are automatically liked by liberal Americans.
4.  He's actually a fiscal and social conservative, so conservative Americans who do their homework will like him.
5.  Has appointed eight different Supreme Court of Canada justices, and the country didn't implode.
6.  Has never been a reality TV star.
7.  He and his spouse have never cheated on one another, thus never had to lie about or help cover up dalliances.
8.  His hair, although it usually looks kind of plastic, like Lego hair, doesn't look like the top of his head is being ripped off when he's caught in a stiff breeze.

9.  Can sing and play piano.

10.  Cats like him (I guess this is only a plus for a certain percentage of people).

Also, he resigned his seat in Canada's House of Commons today, so he's available!

I'm curious as to why?   Some of the finest constitution loving people I've ever known were Senior Military Officers.   Though, not all are or were suited to be POTUS, any of them would be better than what we've currently got.

My pick would be an honest non politician, non criminal (could be redundant) with no ties to any political party and has experience managing something that is significant. Some one that gets the job done and tells the truth no matter where the chips fall.

I'd have to put some thought into it but, General Powell is an exceptional person and leader although, I'm not sure he'd be my first pick.   Integrity would be the key for me and that eliminates most of the also rans.

I would personally like to see the nominees switched. Pence for prez and Trump vp.

Pence has done a good job for Indiana IMO, although some Rainbow and union people might say otherwise. Can't please everybody.

BTW, I shook Holcomb's hand the other day and didn't even know him.   He was at INDOT'S presentation of 1,000,000 bucks grant money to our city for streets.  Holcomb is the Lt. governor and is running to fill Pence's spot as governor.

Indiana is kinda low key and free of debt.

I used to like Powell a lot.  Then he endorsed the zero (both times, I think).

That's enough to be off eveyone's list for life, and erases all his other good attributes.

Newt Gingrich would be a great president.

Right now, there is NO Republican, who the Dems would approve, that the Repubs would.  And vice versa.

Trump is as non political a candidate as I remember.  Because he has not been a politician his whole life, he makes mistakes that one who has been in politics tends not to make.  Mostly, it is called actually answering questions, and telling the truth.

Not defending him, but I really do not think that was his intent. He has made some mistakes and poor choices in his wording because he is not a professional politician, but at the same time that is what has made him as popular as he is. He is not politically correct and that is what many who identify with him like.

This poster boy reporter was trying to belittle and harass Mr. Trump.  I could cite instances where Hillary was less than a peach to reporters that she considerd hostile to her.

Of course, she avoids the press like the plaque.
