ALICE or MOLLE ?

I know you can cram a ton of stuff in an ALICE pack and its sort of waterproof.

Are we all so old none of us go on long hikes anymore?

I believe most "hikes" for bikers can be referenced to those involving the grabbing of the waistband/belt area of a pair of jeans upwards over the belly area of said abdominal area. uglystupid2

Neither.

ALICE packs have their place, they are for function, and they are dandy for runnin through the jungle with your M16 @ 19 years old. I have 3 that the kids and I use instead of carts for shooting. ALICE (med) is 5lb empty with frame and about 40 liters volume. If you load it right, it only sucks a lot to carry. If you load it wrong, you will hurt. Shoulder straps suck and the waist belt is about useless. I grabbed two when the boy started scouts to figure out if he would stick with it. He did, and we upgraded.

Backpacking, aka, hiking long enough that you need a pack, has evolved a lot. Try campmor.com. I have a high Sierra 75 internal frame that I got on sale for under 100.00 that carries well.

I don't think you really want an ALICE.

Most folks have gone with internal frame packs. But, I still use a 30 year old Kelty external frame which has held up fine over the decades. I like the circulation of the external, plus I can't see getting another pack when this one still works fine. The key to a good pack and comfort is the suspension system.

I don't do much hiking... at least not the kind that requires a pack.

But, I do use a Ridgeline 100 hiking pack for camping.  It holds a sleeping bag, hammock, life vest (for kayaking trips), ammo, and 5 or 6 days of clothing.  It's nice to be able to carry everything in one bag.

The only thing I wish it had is external mounting loops for holding my tent also... it's pretty large.  But, when carrying the hammock, I usually don't bother with the tent.

I use an REI Trail 40 which worked out well on my hike in the grand canyon.      Hiked the south Kaibab down to the Tonto trail then up the bright angel trail   16 miles total for the day.  I wanted to do a RIM TO RIM hike but my older brother did not want to push it so.  I will do it someday.  In 2 weeks I head back out west , this time to Hike Zion's observation point and angels landing.   Wish I could ride the bike out there maybe a daytrip out of Vegas on a rental on my last day ?

Thanks Oss maybe next time.  Some of the place we plan on visiting require a little more ground clearance.
