As some of you are aware, I'm going in on the 31st for hip replacement surgery, they're going to use the "anterior" procedure for which I'm thankful. The main difference....no cutting of muscles, meaning a much shorter hospital stay and rehab. So....here's what I've put my wife through over the years re. the hospital. In 2002, I had my first bypass and a hospital stay of 4 days. I was admitted the day of her birthday, kinda spoiling our(my) plans for the day. In 2007, I had a kidney stone about the size of a meteorite that wouldn't pass. It was Thanksgiving Day afternoon about 3:00pm when we were on our way to the ER. A week long stay followed then a 2 1/2 month presence of a stent. They couldn't blast the stone so had flushed it back into the kidney, but the kidney had swelled to an enormous size due to blockage so they didn't dare blast the kidney at this point. In 2012, most of you are aware of me nearly checking out due to a major heart attack. That was a couple months following the death of a second daughter from cancer and I was really despondent. The surgeon feels that had a major impact on my health at the time. It occurred four days before our anniversary. My wife joked(I think) at that time she was done with my excuses for getting out of doing stuff and once I got well she was going to just shoot me. Well, obviously that didn't happen so now fast forward to the present. A couple days ago she was joking again(I hope)...."I should have carried through with my plans four years ago, who knew you were going to pull this crap(referring to the hip)." She claimed I didn't have an excuse this time but I insisted it was because of Halloween....the oversized "kiddies" coming to the door; i.e., teenagers, always bugs me. I was looking to take one last good ride before having to park the bike for 3-4 weeks and yesterday, Saturday, was it. Perfect weather, clear sky with early temps in the low 60's when I left home to meet some other Floridians for lunch. Her final words as I walked out....."if you have an accident tell them to not move you and call me, I'll just come and shoot you for sure this time." She then kissed me good-bye, adding....."geez, I can't wait to see what you're going to do for me for Thanksgiving and Christmas."

John, could you touch base with your daughter so she can let us know after the shooting takes place? Wishing you the best of good fortune with the hip operation.

John, could you touch base with your daughter so she can let us know after the shooting takes place? Wishing you the best of good fortune with the hip operation. I told Toni(remember her?) what Rita had said, her answer...."you go girl." She was going to come down to help out but since the appt. was moved to the end of the month, she isn't able to. She keeps the books for their business and the end of the month is not a good time to leave. Told me she misses the chance to play nurse Ratchet on me, told me she'd probably even hold back on my choppers as a payback for when a teenager. She gets that streak from her mother I'm sure. On her softer side, she put an old HS friend of hers in touch with us. She's in the medical care business, caring for all sorts of patients at their home. She's filling in for Toni for the first couple days and two of her helpers are also chipping in. My wife is totally unable to care for me so needs all the help we can get for her since I'm her caretaker normally. Our church has an outreach program where they furnish meals for short term shut-ins, they're going to help us out for the balance of the week after I'm discharged which should be Tuesday, day after surgery. I can't wait for Thanksgiving to get here, means this will all be behind me.

John, You and your family have definitely had your share of bumps and thumps... Know that I'm having best thoughts for your upcoming adventure, and that you and your wife get the help you need to get through it. You'll be dancing before you know it.... Bob

John, I think she is the way you raised her to be. Sometimes that comes back to get us. Aren't they doing that work all from behind you even in October?

Nurse Ratchet, Wow! Better run (if you can) if you see any headset with wires, John.
All kidding aside, after all the major bad times that you've had, this will be a breeze in comparison.
Never the less, I will be putting in a prayer for you John and asking our Board of Elders to do the same at the Nov 1st meeting.
It's too bad that we don't live closer, we could have a scotch or two sitting on the patio.

Wayne, I'd sure enjoy the chance to do that once again. We could sit out back on our patio and have a moving comedy of golfers pass by. Some of the sights.....oh my! Karen, I once told my daughter Toni that I wanted to live long enough to be a pain in the sister's collective butts. She gave me a hug and said "daddy, you have exceeded your expectations!" That was at least 20 years ago. Remember "Father Knows Best?" Depends on who you ask.

Hey John, be thinking about you next week. From what I've heard the replacement surgery isn't an ordeal at all. Do the rehab and exercise.
Hmmmmm, a drink on the patio......sounds good to me !!
Good luck friend !!
