I just watched the second in the series of the show M A R S on the National Geographic Channel.
It's very good. It's a mix of documentary and fiction using the past and present for documentary and the year 2033 for the future fiction. Lots of tech facts and insight in the doc part and tasteful, typical hollywood for the drama.
Excellent show, if you like docs and sci fi.
Couple of things that hit the mark were, choking up when the vid of the shuttle accident played and realizing how much a strong President makes a difference, when a national tragedy happens. It was good to see Pres Reagan speak.

Sorry I can not go along with you on this. It is our destiny to explore, always has. From the Asian people crossing the bearing see land bridges to North America, The Aborigional people crossing the land bridges and shallow seas to Australia, Old World explores setting up trade routes that brought Africa and North America into the picture and of course the Moon and many Nasa probes to the Solar System Planets paving the way for the future. Out of these more far more technological gains and wealth came about than the money spent to achieve them. For Nasa's moon missions the payback I have read was 7 to 1, in fact I wrote a paper about this in College and the real numbers do not hold me to.
Those future mining operations of Asteroids and Planets for minerals will surely help the rich and they will help the poor and middle classes greatly also and hopefully lift up the lives of everyone. There are far better people than myself to explain all the benefits.
However as to cleaning up this Planet I am with you Brother. Both should go full speed ahead hand in hand.

I kind of drift to the more simpler, the more practical things first. I sort of think in terms of Earth First attitude. If our tax payers are taking care of first, and the spare cash is available, then go for it. I mean if your wife and kids were barely making it, would you go out and buy a new Corvette because it was a good investment for the future. I am for science that benefits or public, I really do, but don't ignore the public that funds these projects, just take care of them first, that's all.

the rich have always been the first to reap the benefits of exploration. just look at the great sailing explorers that came to this continent in the name of Spain and other countries. It opened up the trade routes and unfortunately the ultimate bad one of slavery too but let's not get into that whole issue. I don't see us using space creatures as slaves anytime soon. For us I guess space really is "The Final Frontier" and I have to imagine (using) some of the minerals we may find out there in some way can benefit us with new metals to create things like lighter and stronger ships, aircraft, building materials for bridges and buildings and who knows what else. I'm not sure who is funding the Space-X program but they seem to be advancing very quickly with rocket designs and even re-landing their rocket boosters to specific locations. Do we need to pay attention to Mother Earth, yes we do. I just read yesterday millions of trees are dying out in California from lack of water. Now is it that the forest is being culled by nature itself or is it really a water issue? In nature only the strong survive. Being a kid of the '60's and growing up through the evolution of the NASA space program I think space exploration is cool. The videos we got back from the Mars rovers was interesting to me and let's not forget the Voyager program which are still traveling since launching in 1977 and are billions of miles from home. http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/index.html

agree with first post, take care of EARTH first not spending billions on MARS. neat idea, but Trump might put an end to this space exploration as well concentrating billions in the US first right??? One can only hope he does what he says. I do though understand 1000s and 1000s if in space industry connections will be outta jobs as well so that is not good either, catch 22 so to speak.

I am not trying to be the pooper at you party, although the entertainment part of this program is great, I won't argue that. But keep a couple thing in the back of your head, first the National Geographic, in some peoples eyes represents truth and facts. So I ask myself, is this entertainment program, creating a positive attitude towards going to MARS, sort of a prelude to public acceptance for the actual program to Mars. We need to go to mars like we need VD, they are going to spend billions on this project, to so called explore, but in my opinion they are actually going to explorer for valuable resources, that the wealthy will benefit using our taxes to get there. We have been hearing more and more about, water going bad in communities across our country. Clean up our own planet, before we go to dirty another and in the event you decide to go, use your money not ours. Our public health coverage is more important than going to Mars. I am sorry about the rant!!!
And you call yourself dreamaker? There's nothing wrong with going to Mars. Exploration is good but just look at all the new tech that will be developed trying to get there. Look at the tech we got from the moon mission. I think it will be great and only hope I live long enough to see a man on Mars.

Yah, new tech and how does that benefit me or most living on Earth day to day? I must be missing something with billions spent for my benefit?

Wasn't trying to start a philological debate, but not against them either. I just thought it was an interesting show. Found this. https://spinoff.nasa.gov/Spinoff2008/tech_benefits.htmlNasa and its technologies has made life better for many, but, at what cost?

I like watching programs like this. But, for "our" money why not spend time here exploring the oceans. It is said that there are 2 places that the cure for cancer may be found. In the ocean or the jungle? Let's explore those places first and spend our money on something that may benefit us all. Guess I'm a party pooper.

I had rather have my tax dollars spent on space travel than on welfare. Space exploration would create thousands of jobs not to mention the rewards. Welfare holds people back (makes slaves of men) creates a lot of criminals and cost more than any thing else.

Do others view two threads combined (MARS and Going to Mars), or is it just my computer??

It is happening on mine also. Must be a space time warp or a worm hole developed between the two threads. Just hope it does not end up like the Philadelphia Experiment.

Same words on the title, but subject matter is different mindsets. One is entertainment and the other is a concern. "Admin" what is going on!!!
