I've watched some folks yank their side covers off like
they were made from titanium... I'm always afraid I'm
going to break a tab, I always carefully do it just like
the owner's manual says, and I usually lube the
grommets a little when I snap them back in.

I eBayed a brand new set of red side covers back in
2007, $40.00 each, and felt pretty good about it, they're
still put away, waiting for me to break a tab on the originals,
hasn't happened yet  cooldude

Last night I eBayed a red center cover (not new, but looks
good) for $19.95!

I can't wait until it gets here, I hope it is good like I think it is...

Nice find! I'm like you....now over 15 years being oh so gentle removing those side covers. I fully expected to break a tab on one of 'em by now, but have been lucky so far....

Something I always worried about too.  My tabs didn't break off but fit loose enough that I thought a good wind would blow it off.  I drilled a hole in the top of the covers and ran a zip tie through the hole and around the frame.  No more worries. Smiley

I feel like an idiot every time I remove them because I forget where to pull...so I refer to the owners manual every time just to be safe.  Roll Eyes

My tabs are still intact after 17 years but the first thing to break on mine was the center section around the seat release key cylinder. Never did understand how or why it happened. Got all 3 pieces way back when for $60.00, still have the extra set of side covers.

I broke one early in my ownership, fixed it, and have been careful with the tabs ever since.  I did forget to snap the right side cover into place once, and discovered it gone when I next stopped.  That twigged my memory about hearing an odd clatter.  I went back to where I heard the clatter, and found it on the shoulder, a little scraped up but not broken.

Really easy to remove, just pull the back end out first and swing it out a bit. Then remove it from the front tab that usually breaks. Doing it that way doesn't cause the front tab to pry against the slot.  My OEMs are still packed away since I installed the Corbins, but I've never broken a tab on any bike I've ever worked on in the last 13+ years.

Of the thousands of times I've seen the pic of your bike I never noticed the Corbin side covers. Of course there is plenty of other things to grab your attention!

Is it me or does the middle cover look like a map of Texas? uglystupid2

I broke off one on my first Valk back in 99, it's been velcroed on since and still holding.

The bike I got from GA, the PO drilled holes in both sides and the middle and used zip tyes to hold it together.  Kinda surprised he didn't wood screw them on.  Chrome, so it was a double shame.

I found a new/used middle cover here and you can't see the holes unless you look close and I can't look close anymore w/o my glasses, so it's good.

2funny never thought about it, but it does look like Texas. And there's a big hole right about where Serk is.  2funny

What is the story with the chrome side covers?  Honda add on?  Original on some?

I just recently purchased a 97 standard and from the research I've done, it's #29 from the first day of builds.  It's in nice condition with only 37K.  Anyway it has chrome side covers with both tabs missing, they both seem to stay in place currently but I like the velcro idea.

I've got to say, that I'm liking the Valkyrie "community" feeling I get here.  It's a lot like the jet boat community that I've been a part of for the last decade.

Original on none.  Add on is probably not correct terminology.  They were offered as replacement parts.

Ya gotta put it the right place on the frame member under the covers.  I used 2 of those 1" square ones.

If you go shopping for set of the chrome ones in our classifieds or eBay, be prepared.....I've seen people advertise complete sets for upwards to 500.00 bucks.  They're just plastic.

Btw....you're right, this is really a great place to be.   cooldude

Velcro worked best for me, I have repaired the broken tab but the cover always seems too loose. Velcro to the frame and they are stuck till you pull them off next time, has worked for years.

Yahoo!

It came today. 100% structurally good, and way good
cosmetically too.
