Author Topic: Bought a new F6B. Now have new dilemma.  (Read 1149 times)

I just bought a new F6B Deluxe.  What an incredible ride.  Extremely smooth and maneuverable. Over the years I've been mostly a local short trip riding guy.  Last fall I did a 4000 mile ride through Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona and Nevada on my 1999 Interstate.  The Interstate performed flawlessly and I had an absolute blast.  I'm planning on doing several more similar rides this year.  Thus, I bought the F6B.  I was a bit concerned about the increasing age of the Interstate.  Even though in reality, the Interstate will probably perform flawlessly for many more years.  My dilemma  is should I sell or keep my Interstate?  I've pondered the idea of stripping off the bags and making the Interstate into an around town cruising bike.  In reality, I guess that this is a good dilemma to have.  I Can't go wrong with having too great motorcycles in the garage.

If it were me I would keep it, unless financial reasons but the way I see it is that it ain't eating nothing other than a little ins. Every year. There are many here that have more than one Valkyrie also, I thought about buying an F6B a while back but don't have room for a third machine at this time tickedoff even if I had have bought one I would have not gotten rid of either Phat girl cooldude

I agree....a good dilemma, although it won't be a difficult one for me at all when I'm hopefully in the same position sometime in the not too distant future. Have had my 99 IS for now just over 15 years, and I will never let her go....even if one day she's just there for me to look at. We've been too many places together for me to think about someone else owning her...or Heaven forbid stripping her down to sell in parts. Still tour regularly on her (over 7500 mi round trip last year to WV, among others) and she's never let me down. Been thinking about adding a GW or an adventure touring bike one day soon, but it would definitely have to share garage space with the Valk, and will probably never receive the same level of "affection" from me Wink

Whatever you decide, take your time deciding.  You just got the 2d bike.  You'll probably like it, but who knows?  I think all riders need two bikes.  I used to have five;  it was not planned, it just happened, and that was too many (unlike firearms, which should only be bought, but never sold  Grin).

Assuming you have the room and can afford both in the short term (registration, plates, insurance, inspections, maintenance) this decision should not be made in haste.

If you sold the Valk and later decided you wanted another, what a pity not to have your original.

Do not strip an interstate, supervalk it (though the F6B is essentially a Wing supervalk).  If you want a std, sell the IS and get one (or better yet, work a trade.  Many (with chronic back seaters) have bought standards, and later decided to trade up to an IS. Come spring, you post a classified with a nice shiny IS for trade for a std, I'd wager you will get some takers, and some nice choices.

I've had 2 Valk Interstates that got totaled but loved them for the 100k of combined mileage. After #2 was totaled, I just didn't see the need to go the same route(black Interstate a 3rd time). I bought a new F6b in July 2015 after also contemplating the new Valk.

I really don't think any of us should tell you to get rid of your Classic Interstate, if in fact you can keep it and still enjoy riding it.

Ride your F6b a while and see how you like it. I love mine and don't regret my decision one bit. Even though the ole Valks were "relatively" maintanance free, the F6b has a few advantages in that it requires even less maint. You might find you are riding your Valkyrie less and less. You can put a luggage rack on the B and carry almost as much as your Interstate could. What I would not do is let the Valk sit without being started and put on the road frequently. You don't want your carbs gumming up...or your gas tank to rust.

Congrats on your F6b and good luck with your decision on the Valk...whatever route you choose.

Is that for certain, Brit? Either way, I'm not concerned at all. The F6b still has a ton of aftermarket parts and vendors that will continue to supply parts for quite a while. You have to remember the F6b shares many, many parts with Wings over a several year period. I love how many options there are for the "B" from exhaust to seats, to windshields, pegs, fog lamps, LED lighting, and on and on.

What I was told at FCR last year by an owner.

If I had the money and space I'd have one next to my Valkyrie.

I've liked the look ever since Cobra "made" one for the guy who rode around the world on a Goldwing.

I think that you will find that you ride the F6B (once you get it equipped the way you want it) much more than the Interstate.  If you don't mind having it sit around and not be used very much then you may want to keep it.  I sold my Valkyrie when I got a Goldwing.  I just did not think it was worthwhile to have two bikes that are basically touring bikes.

As has been said, keep BOTH for awhile NOT making any hasty decisions selling 1 of the 2 so soon.  If you find your old Valk sits not being used after say 1-2 riding seasons and feel it is time to let it go,  then go ahead and sell it.   The old Valk will not depreciate much in next 1-3 years so keep it for awhile for sure just in case.

But, I do agree,  really no sense in having 2 big touring bikes in my eyes sort of a waste of space if not running both of them to keep the cobwebs outta each.  Is nice to have 2 bikes though.  I have my VAlk I/S and 4 years ago bought a 250cc scooter dirt cheap for 20 mile runs and shorter.  I get a smile on both riding them just in a different way.  When I pass HD's on the scooter I get more smiles/enjoyment when I look over waving at them doing 55 mph me doing 70 mph.   2funny

congrats on the f6b though.  If you ride 2-up, the significant other though might enjoy the old VAlk I/S better is my guess vs. the new F6B.    So, do NOT make any hasty decisions on selling until for sure you know which one you want as a full time tourer.

I'm always of the mind to keep the second bike if you have no need to sell... assuming that you have a safe, dry, rodent free environment to keep it in, and prep it properly for storage. If you do sell it, wait for springtime when you get the best price.

The only thing that would keep me from holding on to it is that it's two same purpose bikes... both are large and heavy tourers. If you had a small, around town cafe racer or something quite different for your second bike, then for sure hang on to both.

Really, you can't go wrong either way. The nice thing about the 1500 Valkyrie is there are so many beautiful, low mileage machines still available to buy if you ever sell and regret it!

I agree with some here.  Same purpose; two bikes.  I want to help you out and I think Mark81 is trying to cheat you.   I can give you five times Mark's offer.

Now what am I going to do with a fourth Valkyrie?   coolsmiley

Well, since Carl already has four bikes (all Valkyries I assume), with limited space for another (hopefully), I go a buck higher than Carl.   I've only got one Valkyrie and a lot of space in my shop.   Evil
Mark81 is wrong, I've never seen a junk Valkyrie.   Wink

I think we all feel that way for awhile anyways, even after selling say a cycle or ATV or car/truck that has treaten you right and done well for us with no issues.  I literally cried some when sold in 1997 after owning for 10 years my 1984 Honda Magna cycle after dressing her up the way I wanted it with leather side bags,  windshield,  tall passenger backrest, upfront hwy. pegs, and rear lockable trunk on back.  I felt insulted the new owner wanted to attempt to knock off another 100 bucks at the time since it needed a new rear tire already ONLY selling it dirt cheap at 1500 bucks when I could easily get that now for it even today.

After strongly considering the $52.00 bid, I've decided to keep the old Valk.  Nothing to lose except garage space.   Thanks guys for all of the suggestions.  Well most of them.

Probably a wise decision on your part at the moment.  If by the end of this summer you decide you have no want for it then let her go. P.S.  Willow bid 5 times my original $50 bid then I upped him by $2 to outbid Rams,   my bid was up to $252 if that changes your mind Wink Wink

The F6B has NOT been discontinued. At least not completely yet. I believe there is a 2017 listed for the Canadian site. Not sure about American Honda ? Unclear, not showing a 2017. There is a 2017 model though just might have to go to another country to buy one.  Cheesy Who knows about 2018. Wide speculation is that the Gold Wing will be redone in 2018.

My Valkyrie does not get ridden as much as my F6B , but it is nice to have a choice and still enjoy riding it. Plus it's nice to have a back up in case of whatever. I'm getting ready to pull my F6B somewhat apart for some upgrades. I don't have to be in a hurry, if we get a good riding day in January or February, I still have a bike to ride. cooldude
