I have a few scratches in my helmet visor and am looking at replacements.  I wear prescription glasses so I'm looking at tinted visors since $1.99 sunglasses are not an option.  Do any of you have any experience with mirrored visors vs tinted and which block the sun better?  These are some of the color options available for the arai sai style shield http://www.ebay.com/itm/Arai-SAI-Tinted-Shield-Visor-Rx7-RR5-CorsairV-RX-Q-Vector2-Signet2-Adsis-i-Type-/131916409438?var=&hash=item1eb6d4aa5e:m:mTlNfCQX4Q9GZnXeGZ9FrrA&vxp=mtr

Mark--I don't have any experience with the mirrored, but I use a yellow pin lock insert that helps with glare and seems to improve acuity, but the best thing is that the shield no longer fogs up on cold mornings.  Pinlock has inserts for most helmets.

I wear dark prescription polarized (single vision/distance lenses) glasses, and even my dark tint visors on top of them still let too much sun in when riding into it.  Not Arai.  No idea on mirrors.

Found these.

The mirrored ones don't block anymore than just tinted. They just look cooler.

Well, I don't know squat about any of that but, I can attest that when I meet folks wearing the mirrored version, they have a very good looking reflection directed back at me.   Wink

Greg, they do make pinlock for the Arai visors and I have put serious thought into it but even if the visor doesn't fog up my glasses do when the shield is fully closed so I feel it would be money down the drain.

Britman, I already have prescription polarized transitions lenses I use when riding but like Jess said still let too much light in.

Jess, from glancing over those links is seems like the mirrored doesn't work as well as tinted from bright sun

I figured I could kill 2 birds with 1 stone - scratch free shield and sun blind remedy. My clear shield isn't scratched enough to cause any visibility issues but its icing on the cake as to try a tinted visor. It will still keep it as a backup for night riding

I have multiple Nolan helmets and love them. They have a tinted shield that pops down behind the clear one and acts like sun glasses wrapping around your nose. This allows you to put the clear shield up for allowing air in and still use a tinted shield. The mirrored shields don't block the sun any more than smoke ones. Quite a few helmets offer this. Good luck.

I have a Nolan with a clear, a smoke and a mirrored(all with pin locks, the greatest invention ever). The mirrored is roughly the same for tint but is MUCH cooler in the hot sun. A huge improvement. I use the mirrored exclusively but keep the clear in the saddle bag in case I have to ride at night, which I rarely do.

And as big d said, the drop down visor inside the helmet helps even more for those evenings when you're riding directly into the sun.

I use a strip of electrical tape across the top and bottom of my visor to cut out the glare from the orb of the sun. Stops the sun when I have the visor up as well.

I have a Bell helmet, and they offer a Transitions face shield for it, which I use.  I quite like it, but wish it would go a little darker in the bright sun.  As with any tinted shield, it would probably cause your Transitions glasses to not darken as much as they would with a clear shield, but on bright days maybe enough light would come through to cause the glasses to darken as well.  I know the idea of a Transitions shield is moot with an Arai helmet, but there it is for those with the right models of Bell helmets.

I also have an electrostatically-adhered tinted strip, which cuts out some glare from the sky, and is especially helpful when the sun is low.

I wear an Arai when I wear a FF helmet and I use their darkest smoked visor with pinlock. On the brightest days riding into a setting sun it is not good enough so I put on a pair of sunglasses as well. If anyone knows of a solution for blocking direct sunlight in an Arai or any FF helmet I am all ears. Don't think it exists. It's not like a car where you can flip down the visor. Other than that situation, it rocks.

At least with half and 3/4 helmets, you usually have a little bill in front, and push the helmet as low as it will go in front, and tip your head down to try and block oncoming sun.  Except for motocross, I have never seen a FF helmet with a bill.  I've had the sun so low, the only way I could see was to bring my left hand up and shade my eyes, for miles and miles.  And I've seen guys with skid lids that wear a baseball cap under it (usually backwards, but it gets turned aorund in direct sun).

This is mostly on trips where you have only one direction to go.  Day rides, you just go in a different direction for awhile.

MY HJC has a flip down eye shade.  I love it, but agree that sometimes into the setting sun, its dark sunglasses, plus the shade and even then it can be painful for long distances.

I purchased the arai helmet a week after my last helmet was split open by an audi.  I did 0 research and was recovering from a fairly serious wreck.  I hobbled into the honda dealer and asked whats the best helmet you have? Explained the situation of what happened, handed them the ex girlfriends credit card and we had new helmets $1200 later.  Had i known then what i know now I'd have milked her for more money and got a schuberth.  Hell even my Vega vtune helmet had a flip down visor and built in Bluetooth for under $200.  All i had on my mind was i survived getting rear ended by a car doing 60mph because i had a helmet on. I listened to a salesman. We walked over to his ducati with an arai hanging from it. He wasn't selling what his vendors peddeled on his shelves. He believed in the product enough to buy it himself. I was sold.  Still a great helmet and snell doesn't allow internal features like flip down sun visors and integrated bluetooth.   Anyway I found a listing on ebay for light smoke and dark smoke visors along with 2 used clear visors. I should be good with that until the helmet gets retired in a few years and i shop for a new one with a clear mindset.  Thank you all for your input

I always have sunglasses on. When the sun comes directly at me, I can
just dip my head a little and be looking through "double sunglasses"...

Yeah, it seems to me guys who wear full face helmets, with easily changed out visors, ought to have a dark tint with tape on the top few inches in the saddlebags.  So if the need arises, it can just be popped in and go.  Or a small roll of blue painters tape, which can be stuck on and pulled off without leaving behind a bunch of goop.

I have an HJC full face helmet with a flip up visor.  I spray painted the bottom 3rd. of the visor. When closed I can still see over the paint and as the sun moves I just move the visor up or down to adjust for the suns position. Works better than anything I've found so far.

Hubcap and Britman I have used electrical tape forever on the top and bottom of all my full face Shoei or modular Vega helmet

The most important area though if you look at the pic you posted Mike is the sides as riding to work or home (either south or north) from work the sun comes hard right there,  With my retinal and cornea issues those spots get the tape treatment.

When I come to a stop sign or entering a highway I swivel my head around like an owl.  I find that cars coming KNOW for certain I have seen them if they are looking at me and I can always out accelerate anything on the highway with 4 or more wheels.

I have a flip down sunvisor in addition to the clear visor and I wear prescription glasses.  I do also have amber RX glasses for those rare occasions where I need to travel in the dark,   Hate riding in the dark and will avoid it if possible, I know my limitations

I have a had several HJC ff  helmets.   On each I have gotten the darkest window tint available, cut a strip about an inch and a half, installed it at the top of the shield on the inside.  It cuts the full sun down to reasonable.  Even late afternoon sun.   One just has to dip ones head down a bit.   Since it made to be seen thru, you can see what is in front of you through it.

Where I live this time of year the sun sits in the southern skies and the strip is used when riding south.
