Not sure but I think it has to do with how hyped up everything is now, all the warnings that are constantly broadcast to every TV and radio. If it's going to be 30 below here all we hear is how you could freeze to death in X amount of minutes. I grew up in this weather, I learned when it's cold you need to protect yourself but apparently there must be a lot of people out there that don't know this. I think we hear so many warnings that we tend to ignore most of them, like the boy crying wolf. We also see this in politics now, so and so is going to destroy the country because he or she is doing things I don't agree with, it's all BS.

Bu I will not go on a lake unless it is a marked path.... as in the crossing from St Ignace to Mackinac Island...... Moot point as the snowmobile is long gone... down to one toy now....Valk B

Tomorrow I'm going to the wake of one of the 60 year old men that died in NH.
Dave was no dummy, nor was he reckless.
He was the husband, for over 40 years, to my sister's best friend from childhood. Dave's wife, Mary Joe, grew up 2 houses down from us. Dave was her teenage sweetheart.
He was also a graduate of American International College and had a Master's Degree from Western New England College.
He served our country in the USMC.
Dave was currently an Executive Vice-President of New Balance. He held top positions previously for Sealed Air Corp, Staples and Digital Equipment.
The other gentleman, who I don't know, was a long time friend and a next door neighbor to Dave.
I don't know the complete story yet, but Dave and his friend were experienced snow machine riders and were familiar with the lake and area they were in.

I'm sorry to hear this Bill. That's a terrible tragedy . I've been in more than a few close calls snow machining . I rode for 35 years but sometimes crap happens.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Hook. I wouldn't want to speculate on the conditions that cause them to perish. I have property on Beaver Dam Lake in Wisconsin. The lake spans about 6600 acres and is only 7 foot deep at the deepest part. Yet several snowmobilers have lost their lives on the lake because there are about 3 springs in the lake and the water never freezes over in those spots. The last incident occurred last winter when several were riding after dark in single file and followed each other into the drink and a couple/few of them died.

Very sorry to hear this Hook! I was shocked to read this as well as sad. I posted primarily to remind the snow mobile enthusiasts here on the board. Be alert and take nothing for granted. Also, as I get older I appreciate life much more than when I was younger. Whether you know someone or not. I get a heavy heart for them and their loved ones for obvious reasons. This subject is no different than the one we talk about here day in and day out. Just a different mode and environment, same risk.

see it every year around me someone falls thru on ice whether on foot, atv. snowmobile, or vehicle, but usually they all make it out alive.
The 3 Madison WI lakes of Wingra, Mendota, and Monona are the only lakes anywhere that I know of where ATVs and snowmobiles have to be safety inspected by the DNR with flotation devices on them every 3 years. Personally, I think it is just a money maker for the DNR in Madison, but I guess if it keeps one person alive it is worth it? ONLY time I have fallen thru the ice is under 3 feet of water near shore while coming back off the ice. With this warm 60 degree temps the next few days coming OFF the ice later in the day might become an issue even though 8 inches of ice in the middle, the shoreline is always the first to go. (and unforseen springs).

Spent a winter in Northern Minnesota, about 50 miles south of International falls. The owner of the duplex that I was staying at enjoyed going snowmobile riding at night and had extra machines. Went with him a lot. His place was adjacent two one of the many snowmobile trails in the area. Work all day outside at 20 below and go riding at night, young and crazy. We lived on one of the many lakes in the area. the ice depth was over 3' over most of the lake according to the ice fishing guys. BUT ever so often the ice would crack and heave a bit, putting up a ridge several feet high. Usually there was some open water for a hour or so associated with these cracks. Those ridges and open water claimed several snow machines and riders over the winter I was there. Saw the rescue folks go out and get these idiots. I only rode on the lake during the day so I could see where I was going. did max out the machine I was on, it's speed-o-meter maxed out at 100 mph. Fun when it's 20 below.

never went 100 but 80 is enough for me on a frozen lake maximum depth 5-6 feet.
Judging by the lakes NO ONE should be driving atvs or snowmobiles on the somewhat frozen lakes anymore this year. I went for a 102 mile ride and stopped at Yellowstone Lake (in WI) and although the ice am sure was fine, some idiot all by himself was on the other side of the lake with his ATV and the shoreline from where he came out was 2-3 feet open water all over. He may get off today, but another 60 degree day tomorrow I would not chance it unless he gets a run at it.

My first and only exp on a snow machine is they go really fast, but really have no brakes at all. Just because the track stops doesn't mean the unit stops (on ice). Fortunately, flying on a frozen road into a T intersection on the vertical, I slid between the cars going both ways with the right of way on the horizontal, then off the road and into the woods down the hill tumbling. No injury to man or machine in heavy powder.... though my pants were injured with poople matter. I was sober as a judge, just got no preflight briefing.
About 35yrs ago, I defended my brother for a DWI on a snow machine. He thought it prudent to carry his fifth of Yukon Jack in a pocket with half the bottle showing (and that half was empty). It wasn't. And it didn't help that he couldn't stop laughing. (it said so right in the report)

Early in my life, maybe 6, my dad took me ice fishing. Whatever Dad did I wanted to do. Unfortunately walking behind him while cutting the grass put me into cutting the grass in first grade and Dad never touched the lawnmower again, but that's another story. So we head over to Linwood or Pinconning, MI to go out onto the Saginaw Bay. I thought this could be a long walk. Boy was I in for a surprise. Dad just goes onto the ice with a 5000 lbs. 1960 Bel Air I believe. I was more than scared. Out an out we go, seemed like 5 miles. I was a bit relieved to see another group of cars out there and therefore not the only fools. Back then the Saginaw Bay always had 20 to 30 inches of ice in Jan. through Feb. After that it never bothered me, except guess who got to auger the holes.
Ride safe you snowmobilers.

It was during the DUI stop he couldn't stop laughing. And you know how much the police love that. Being arrested is supposed to be a solemn occasion; you know, like a wedding. This was not his first rodeo, and he was toasted, and never thought he might be apprehended in deep winter in the No MI woods (and logging roads). He was laughing at his good luck. He did a lot of this no thinking behavior in his youth. Many of us did, but only some of us were caught at it all the time. Two years later, he had to go away for several month's incarceration, and voila, he never sinned (or drank) again. Funny how that works. It was awful hard on mom and dad though.
