Garmin engineer shot and killed in Olathe, Kansas by man who allegedly yelled 'get out of my country'.
http://www.theverge.com/2017/2/23/14717506/garmin-engineer-shooting-kansas

And
http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article134396049.html

It seems the shooter (Adam Purinton, 51) thought the Indian guy was from Middle East. Managed to kill him and harm 2 others (including an american citizen, Ian Grillot).

It could have been even worst if not because of the heroic act of Ian Grillot who stepped in to help the Indians (he got 1 bullet in the hand that got into the chest/neck if I understood correctly).

His words: " _ People are calling me a hero, it is not like that. I was just doing what anyone should have done for another human being".

The fatal victim was Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32 years old, married. A quick interview with his wife (there is another short video with Ian Grillot): http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/24/us/kansas-olathe-bar-shooting/

Grillot's sister setup a gofundme page to help pay for the medical expenses (target was 300K, at the time of writing they have 362K). I personally donated 50 bucks and recommend anyone to donate what you can: https://www.gofundme.com/a645d-ians-road-to-recovery

The note I left at the gofundme was: "Ian, your braveness to stand up for what is right represents some of the best values of USA. I wish you a speed recovery and God bless you.".

Concerning the shooter: he was found 80 miles away in Clinton, Missouri drinking. FBI will probably charge him for a hate crime, but it is confirmed charges for one count of premeditated first-degree murder and two counts of attempted premeditated first-degree murder.

Apparently he couldn't understand why Grillot  asked him to leave the place after he screamed to the Indians to 'Get out of my country!' and asked 'Why you are standing up for them!?' before leaving to get to his pickup and next return and start shooting.

Very unamerican if you ask me.

Very unamerican if you ask me.

Very Homicidal, if you ask me.

Personally, I think "Hate" crime laws are stupid.   A crime is crime, period.

This is a real tragedy, and as much as the media and anti-gun folks try to tell you the opposite, it is not indicative of America or American values.  It is also not a result on Trump's attempts to enforce existing immigration laws.  It is, IMHO, the result of an irrational, probably drunk individual, perhaps a true racist (not the falsely media labeled run of the mill racist) that the left accuses every white man to be.  I believe the suspect in this crime was partially acting out of frustration stemming from the lack of enforcement of immigration laws over the last 20 years.  I sure the victim(s) in this crime, are Legal immigrants if they aren't NB citizens.  Unfortunately irrational drunks aren't going to realize that.

Are this suspect accomplished was to destroy the lives of several innocent people, and harm the cause of those of us that want enforcement of immigration laws and constitutional carry nation wide.

My sympathy to all the victims.

I agree.  A crime is a crime.   To add a hate label to a crime in an effort to increase the seriousness or potential sentence is ridiculous....just bump the sentence of a death/assault or whatever up to what it should be.    And I don't think we should make the label for killing a police dog/officer more than a regular dog/person....  all lives matter.  JMO

The criminal was stupid if nothing more.  He mistook two Indian contractors for middle eastern muslims after having an intense argument with them. He was drunk, went home to get his gun and then came back to Austin's to shoot them.  There was a twenty-four year old hero at Austin's who did what he could to stop this insanity and took a bullet for his trouble.

It almost amuses me that the news media keeps referring to the fifty-one year old madman as the alleged perpetrator.  How stupid is that?  He admitted what he'd done and has been identified.  They, the media, keep concentrating on this being a hate crime.  I agree with some others that the whole idea of hate crimes is stupid.  It's like people want to pretend that it's worse to murder for hatred than it is to kill for money or jealousy.  Murder is murder.  Attempted murder is attempted murder.  It is simply wrong and against the law to kill a human being other than to defend life.

I expressed my disgust at this killing and wounding via the Gofundme accounts.  I think that is the most meaningful way for us to cast our votes at this time.

Indeed the whole concept of hate crimes is nothing but more political correctness in statutory form.

Moreover, a great deal of violent crime is driven by hate in one form or another, but only certain types of (PC) hate makes it a hate crime.

So if I murder in a proscribed hate crime way, can I be executed twice?  Not really.

What it does do is make the prosecutor's job harder.  Why would you ever do that?

(PS: when you go home to get your gun, that's textbook first degree murder there.  That'll earn you a top sentence with or without PC fluff)

If I'm going to go home to get my gun then come back to shoot somebody there is a damn good chance that I hate them even if they are my own race. I've always found the hate crime thing a little stupid.

Maybe we should get a "like" crime. It would carry a lesser  sentence because you liked the person but decided to screw him/her over anyway. Shocked

After a guilty verdict, but before sentence, both prosecution and defense are allowed to present evidence of either aggravation (prosecution) or extenuation and mitigation (defense).

Since many of my defense clients did it in front of witnesses, or on camera, and/or fully confessed in writing (before they ever hired me), a good deal of my work was preparing evidence in extenuation and mitigation (it's all I had).

Of course a good prosecutor could argue that since the defendant and victim were good friends, his punishment should be even harsher.  If he kills his friends, he's really unsafe in public with total strangers.

The majority of murders have always been and remain between family and friends.  The jump from love to hate is not a long one.  Humans are a dangerous and unreliable species.

The 'hate crime' label is tangential.

What it is highly disturbing is the fact that some a**hole tried to kill 3 young productive members of the society just because he is a f*king racist...
